Welcome to the monthly Lunch About Nothing in Westminster
Lunch About Nothing with approximately 35 of my best friends. Rafael's 32 West Main St. 28Jan2019
Welcome to Lunch About Nothing, September 24, 2018. Held the fourth Monday of the month at Rafael's in Westminster (not necessarily the last Monday) 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Next lunch February 25. Just buy your lunch from a great menu of salads and fresh sandwiches.
Make new contacts and see friends. Business is everywhere if you look. Bring some friends. Bring plenty of business cards and fliers. Be prepared to introduce yourself with a 30 second elevator speech. You can even bring a few things to sell if you are a crafter or artist.
It is important to keep your name out there. You never know where the business is and name recognition is important when someone needs your service or product.
It is a good place to look for a new employee or to get your name out there for a job. Long term relationships will bring you business. No need to RSVP. You do not need to join. The group is open. Invite your friends and new people you meet.

Carroll County Food Sundays nutrition efforts including the Veggie Voucher
Program.
Thanks and come hungry and bring your friends!
BTW, Carroll County Food Sunday I will be at the Downtown
Westminster Farmers Market 8:30 to noon on Saturday 7-7-18 and can register you
there.
According to its website, Carroll County Food Sunday “distributes
a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package that is predicated on
household size and is meant to last 3-4 days. It includes meat, eggs, fruits,
vegetables, breads, and milk. Over 400 families a week are served at our
Westminster, Eldersburg, and Taneytown locations.
In an email interview, Frank Baylor, a past president of
Food Sunday said that Food Sunday “started around 1982 from the trunk of Mr.
Jollie's car and has grown to the point where 8,000 lbs. of food are
distributed each week. 250 to 400 families are aided each week…”
“For the sake of human decency, feeding the poor and the
hungry people of Carroll County must be a concern for all of us who are not
hungry,” wrote Jollie, according to the Food Sunday website. “To know
hunger exists and to do nothing is the shame and bane of human life.” Jollie
encouraged the religious community to collect food at their Sunday services for
distribution through a county wide food bank network that was appropriately
incorporated as “Food Sunday.”
The operating budget for CCFS is “supported by community
fund-raisers and direct mail solicitation of county residents. We are grateful
for the churches, individuals, school groups, and service organizations that
raise donations independently on our behalf, and for the local grocers that
donate baked goods. Carroll County Government provides donated warehouse space
in Westminster and utilities….
“Food drives and food donations are also very important in
helping us maintain a reliable inventory of nutritional items year round. We
are constantly purchasing food from a variety of sources based on price and
availability. Our Food Bank Coordinator compares bulk prices at local merchants
with those available from Maryland Food Bank, a large wholesaler in the
Maryland Region. When possible, we take advantage of special deals to stock up
on essential food supplies that can be held in reserve until needed.
Carroll County Food Sunday is governed by a volunteer Board
of Directors comprised of representatives of all sectors of the community. Its
daily operations are managed by two part-time employees – Dennis Fahey, Food
Bank Administrator and Ed Leister, Executive Director.

The next meeting “Carroll CAN” will take place at the Carroll County Public Library in Westminster on Feb. 12, 2017 2 p.m.
The next
meeting “Carroll CAN” will take place at the Carroll County Public Library in
Westminster on Feb. 12, 2017 2 p.m.
At the
January 26th, 2017 meeting of the Carroll County NAACP, Pam
Zappardino reported that a grass roots organization has formed in Carroll to
advocate for positive changes in the community.
The next
meeting “Carroll CAN” - organized by “Together We Will,” will take place at the
Carroll County Public Library in Westminster on Feb. 12, 2017 2 p.m. This will
be about the 3rd meeting. More information may be found on the
organization’s website here: https://carrollcan.org/
++++++++++++++++++
The next
meeting “Carroll CAN” will take place at the Carroll County Public Library in
Westminster on Feb. 12, 2017 2 p.m.
According
to recent information on the Carroll Can listserve:
“…Come to the Carroll CAN meeting
at Westminster library at 2pm today! -AND/OR- If you are able to do so, please
sign up to help with a committee that you may have an interest in or maybe even
start your own if there is a need. We'd love to have some more people offer
their knowledge on specific topics as well to add content to our website and
keep the group informed.
“Some examples of the volunteer
needs are: Writer of Weekly/Monthly newsletter and Representatives’ Calendars
Liaison - report to communications/social media chairs when representatives
will have town halls”
We began
with a meeting in November 2016 at a Denny’s in Westminster. We used the time
to feel empowered and encouraged that a group had formed (we were only 300
members on a Facebook group site at the time, but just that was so exciting at
the time!). We shared our stories about why we had come, and there was a common
theme of “I thought I was the only one.” The overwhelming feeling was one
of relief to have found fellow Carroll County residents who shared the same
values and concerns.
And then
we hit the ground running!
We
developed an organizational and leadership structure, which continues to grow
as we find our groove.
We
organized a bus to attend the Women’s March on Washington. That wound up
becoming 3 buses, with 136 passengers! For many, it was their first march
and their first moment of activism! We had a volunteer design our green
“March On” buttons that we now wear proudly. After the march, a group of
marchers went to a local restaurant for dinner, still in their pink hats, and
they received applause and invited others to join our group!
We
programmed our representatives’ numbers into our phones, and faced our
nervousness and discomfort by making calls to their offices. We have now
become comfortable with something that most of us had never done before 2017!
We met
for monthly meetings, and the rooms were packed with energy and ideas.
We
developed a list of local businesses to support due to our common values and
interests.
We built
a website, and received donations to host the site for the next year!
Some
awesome stats: Our website has had 3,952 views in the last 30 days (as
of 2/8/17).
We made
a public Carroll CAN Facebook page so people can find us and
see our calls to action.
Some
more awesome stats: In just the first eight days of February, we have had
696 visits! Our Carroll CAN public Facebook page grew at 14.5% last week,
which is better than the Together We Will USA page and Pantsuit District page.
We engage more users than Indivisible, TWW-MD, and Pantsuit District!
We have
a Call to Action team that verifies and disseminates an action item that we can
do every day! They post these calls to action on the website, facebook page and twitter.
We
increased communication by having an email liaison send the content of the
facebook page to those who are not on facebook.
We
developed a logo that signifies our awareness that we are stronger as a united
team. We once felt alone because of our values, and now we have
both comfort and unified action because of our togetherness.
We had
members who went to BWI to show support to refugees and immigrants on the day
the bad went into effect. We have members who gather on Main Street in
Westminster on Saturdays with signs that have messages of inclusion, kindness,
and support.
We have
organized a Town Hall Meeting on 3/2/17 focused on the Affordable
Care Act! We have invited our representatives to attend, and we are
hopeful they will.
We
organized small groups that meet at local restaurants for support and
brainstorming.
We have
amazing passion and motivation! People who have never been engaged in anything
like this before have stepped up to lead a subcommittee! People who made
a suggestion wound up being willing to make that suggestion happen! All
it takes is that first thought of “Can I do ___?” and you will get a resounding
and supportive, “Yes you CAN!”
We have
managed to add activism and volunteering to our already full plates. We
have given our talents without expectation of recognition nor reimbursement.
We have learned new skills and been willing to go outside our comfort
zones.
We are
Carroll CAN—an action-focused, action-packed community network of kind,
compassionate, and dedicated Carroll County residents. Together, we have, we
will, and we CAN.

New Year’s Eve celebration

Welcomes 2012” by Kym
Byrnes on Westminster Patch: http://westminster.patch.com/articles/westminster-welcomes-2012
At the stroke of midnight New Year’s Day in downtown
Westminster, nothing dropped. Not a brightly lighted ball - or anything, for
that matter.
As the crowd shouted in unison, “five, four, three, two,
one; Happy New Year” - a large American flag was raised on a bright yellow
bucket lift donated by Ben’s Rental. “2012” accompanied the flag in numbers in
bright lights on a homemade four-by- eight Styrofoam backboard powered by a portable
generator.
“Hey, you know, I mean, why not, we’re always looking up in
Westminster…and if anything, we’re patriotic…,” said Westminster Kevin Utz with
a broad grin, as he nodded approvingly at the flag suspended about thirty-five-feet
in the air above Main Street.
With the temperature in the lower 40s, no snow and hardly
any wind, the weather was perfect for almost 500 people who attended the first
annual Westminster New Year’s Eve celebration in historic downtown Westminster
Saturday night.
Lori Graham, who spearheaded the event, had put a great deal
of thought as to “what the heck do you drop” for a new Westminster New Year’s
Eve tradition. Oh, there were plenty of silly ideas, smiled Graham devilishly.
In the end, it was decided to not drop anything at all.
In honor of the troops, the men and women in uniform, coming
home from the Middle East, Graham wanted to honor their service by raising the
flag for the Carroll County New Year’s celebration in the first unit block of
West Main Street. “I wanted a patriotic Westminster family-oriented event.”
The Westminster police and the Westminster street department
blocked-off the area just minutes before 11:30 p.m., Saturday evening, as folks
had already begun to gather.
Westminster Councilman Tony Chiavacci was there, with thirty
folks from his New Year’s Eve party. “I brought the whole party here,” said
Chiavacci as he peered over the crowd. “Great to see everyone here… Give us a
couple of years and look out Times Square,” in a reference to the hundreds of
thousands who attend the traditional dropping of an expensive Tiffany Ball.
New York City got started on its New Year’s Eve celebration
over a hundred years ago - in 1906. This was Westminster’s first year for a
family-community celebration and Graham and city officials and other community
leaders got started on last Saturday’s event, about 100-days ago...
“Just like New York,” said Bernie Stallknecht, from
Hampstead. She was there with her family. “We unusually go the (Baltimore)
harbor. We wanted to support a Carroll County celebration… (This was) just
wonderful. Keep it local.”
“No wonder they came here. New York hasn’t got anything on
Westminster,” added Graham, as families hugged and kissed and strangers greeted
each other with “Happy New Year.”
Westminster Volunteer Fire Department President Bob
Cumberland, watched from the back of the crowd with fire department treasurer
Bob Ruby and Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding – who was busy
coordinating crowd control with Captain Nancy Yeager.
“Happy New Year – be safe in 2012. We’re thankful for all
the community support last year and looking forward to even better things this
year,” said Cumberland.
Ruby, who also serves with the fire police, stopped in the
middle of his greeting to listen to his radio. “Happy… wait a minute. Well,
there goes the first call of the year, shrubs on fire from fireworks… Where was
I? Oh, Happy New Year.”
Utz noted that he was “overwhelmed with the turn-out. We
thought we might just get a few folks – a Westminster crowd - from the downtown
restaurants. But, families came from all over Carroll County,” said Utz.
Long after midnight, Utz, Graham, Westminster Street
Superintendent Larry Bloom, Westminster Administrator of Economic Development
Stan Ruchlewicz and his wife, Pat, waited patiently to dismantle the flag and
lights while families lined-up to have their pictures taken with the “2012”
display.
Ruchlewicz was all smiles as he and his wife clicked-away
with cameras handed to them. “Great turn out for a first time event,” said
Ruchlewicz, a seasoned urban planner and veteran of helping putting together many
events over the years. “Especially for a family-centered event at midnight…”
Mike Johnson, from Westminster, was also pleased with the
event and added, “All traditions have to start somewhere…” as he surveyed the
families having their pictures taken.
Bloom, who is also in charge of the city’s snow clearing
operations, was glad for good weather. “This weather was great for a good turn
out,” said Bloom as he began to unplug the lights.
“This was awesome,” Graham kept saying to no one in
particular. “Just awesome that so many families came out. It’s good to have a
local community event for families right here in Carroll County.”
