Mills' contributions to hospital follow a healthful tradition
Posted on http://www.explorecarroll.com/ 4/12/09 http://tinyurl.com/cylr5j

On April 3, the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation Founders Dinner honored the newest recipient of its Founders Circle Community Spirit Award, G. Melvin Mills Jr. Mills joins previous honorees Atlee Wampler, David and Betty Scott, Charles Fisher Sr., Scott and Anita Bair, Jack Gambatese, Jack Tevis and Steve Bohn.

Throughout our history there are many examples of basic needs of our community that have been addressed by the private sector.

Look no further than our local hospital. Talk of the need for a hospital in our community goes as far back as the 1880s, and its history is filled with stories of private individuals who worked hard to ensure that it was built.

Many folks in the community may take the hospital for granted, but its success has been greatly supported by the community.

At this year's Founders ceremony, held at St. John's Portico in Westminster, the event's 240 guests also were acknowledged for their generosity and ongoing financial support of the hospital, Carroll Hospice and the hospital auxiliary.
Jack Tevis, chair of the hospital foundation board; John Sernulka, hospital CEO; Charlie Fisher Jr., chair of board of directors; and the 2007 Spirit Award recipient, Steve Bohn, all shared in presenting Mills with the 2009 award for his contributions of time, talent and resources to the hospital since the mid-1980s.

Mills served on the foundation board of trustees from 1995 to 2005. From 2001 to 2005 he chaired the board while also serving on the hospital's board of directors. And during his 10 years of service, more than $15 million was raised on behalf of the hospital and Carroll Hospice.

Also recognized for her contributions was Mills' wife Linda -- as we all know, no one can do great things for the community without the support of family.

[…]

Finally, I should note that Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, the hospital foundation's director of development, helped me with information for this week's column. If you'd like to learn more about the work of the foundation, give her a call at 410- 871-6200.

When he is not eating sushi with Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, Kevin Dayhoff may be reached at kevindayhoff AT gmail DOT com.

Sebelius received more money from Kan. abortion doctor than reported
In a response to questions from the Senate Finance Committee made public last week, Sebelius wrote that she received $12,450 between 1994-2001 from Dr. George Tiller, one of the nation's few late-term abortion providers.
But in addition to those campaign donations, records reviewed by The Associated Press show that Tiller gave at least $23,000 more from 2000-2002 to a political action committee Sebelius established while insurance commissioner to raise money for fellow Democrats.

OBAMA PREPARING CONGRESS FOR CLASH WITH NETANYAHU. By Dana Goldstein

The Israeli newspaper

American supporters of the Netanyahu position are already pressing their case, as Elliott Abrams, a former deputy national security adviser under President Bush, does today in a
Washington Post op-ed. So far, there is good evidence that Obama will have a stiff(er) spine when dealing with conservative Israel supporters who seem to have no qualms about the reactionary positions of the country's new government. In Istanbul Monday, the president stated,

GREEN & GLOVER EXTRA: Fox News' Megyn Kelly pregnant

http://tinyurl.com/czcj8w Washington Times

By Stephanie Green and Elizabeth Glover Monday, April 13, 2009

Fox cub?

The lady spies have learned that Fox News "America's Newsroom" anchor Megyn Kelly is expecting her first child in October.

“The 38-year-old Ms. Kelly” has been rumored to have been linked with Carroll County’s own Jamie Kelly in the past. See: http://tinyurl.com/cpmqpnJamie Kelly and Megyn Kendall link rumors denied

Then again, Mr. Kelly was also to have been rumored to have had a liaison with Katie Couric also… http://tinyurl.com/cywrzbKatie the cougar Couric goes triathlon

So far, no rumor has ever stuck to the elusive, well-dressed, and erudite Mr. Kelly – and now that he has removed himself to Iowa, it has, unfortunately, been increasing difficult to keep tabs on him…

Meanwhile, Ms. Megyn Kelly has since moved on from whatever relationship she may have had – or not have had – with Mr. Kelly and has since “married her husband Doug Brunt last year.”

Mr. Kelly, who is well known for decorum, maintaining confidences and keeping his month shut – has hardly ever uttered a word.

Well, not quite, in an exchange in researching, “Jamie Kelly and Megyn Kendall link rumors denied.” Mr. Kelly did emit a denial…
Is it all just a coincidence? Then how does one explain this photo
that has recently surfaced?

“Photoshop” says Mr. Kelly.

“That’s just crap and you know it, responded Mr. Kelly.
“There is no truth to the rumor that I’ve hooked-up with Megyn Kendall – or
Kelly, or whatever her name is,” waxed Mr. Kelly.

As for this latest development, so far Mr. Kelly has stayed true to character and not commented. So who knows if he feels melancholy or blue over the whole situation?

Congress Forced To Watch Training Video About Bipartisan Cooperation

Congress Forced To Watch Training Video About Bipartisan Cooperation
March 23, 2009
Issue 45•13

WASHINGTON—In an effort to stimulate discussion, resolve party conflicts, and increase legislative productivity, members of the 111th Congress were once again required to watch an instructional video on bipartisan collaboration this week.

Senators reluctantly watch the section on "non-vitriolic communication."
"Since both House and Senate seem unable or unwilling to compromise on several issues regarding tax money, earmarks, or even seating arrangement, we have decided to take drastic action," Vice President Joe Biden told a special joint session of Congress Monday. "Hopefully this will give you some tools you can use to lend a hand, and maybe an ear, across the aisle."

[…]

Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution specifies that the legislative branch must watch the instructional training film "A Vote For Understanding" once every six years. The 30-minute video was made in 1976 and stars former Sen. William Proxmire (D-WI), who guides viewers through a series of short lessons about the importance of listening to the opposition without interrupting, yelling, or filibustering.

The Washington Post advances Emanuel’s agenda

The Washington Post is carrying a story about President Barack Obama’s chief of staff Rahm Emanuel that is written in a manner that certainly plays right into the hands of critics who remain concerned about the objectivity of the traditional print media.

“Emanuel is overhauling his image,” and whoever pitched this story to the Washington Post is high-fiving their friends this evening.

Put on your hip boots and wade in…

Give-and-Take With Emanuel Advances President's Agenda

Lawmakers Respond to Improved Access to White House

By Shailagh Murray Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, April 13, 2009; A01

As the House and Senate debated the budget earlier this month, Rahm Emanuel's spacious West Wing office took on the feel of a legislative bazaar.

Wavering Democrats filed in individually and in groups seeking audiences with President Obama's pugnacious chief of staff, all bearing concerns about the 2010 fiscal blueprint. For some, the issue was farm payments. For others, veterans benefits. Fiscal conservatives balked at the $1.2 trillion deficit. One House member wanted to discuss a new federal building in his district. Another sought an appointment with the commerce secretary.

Forty-six lawmakers beat a path to the White House, and, on April 2, Emanuel's hospitality paid off. All but three of his visitors voted in the House or Senate for a $3.5 trillion blueprint that preserved Obama's ambitious domestic policy goals. The 233 to 196 House margin represented the largest budget victory for either party in a decade.

Emanuel's theatrical style, ballet training and "Rahmbo" nickname, along with the well-worn story about a dead fish he sent to a rival, are duly noted on his Wikipedia page. But in his new job, Emanuel is overhauling his image, becoming more valet than hit man, and his formula for moving Obama's agenda through Congress is beginning to resonate. Even Republicans concede that given Obama's early victories, thornier tasks such as landmark health-care, energy and education bills may not be out of reach.

Ayn Rand Mike Wallace Interview 1959

In this engaging 1959 interview, her first on television, Ayn Rand capsulizes her philosophy for CBS's Mike Wallace. The discussion ranges from the nature of morality to the economic and historical distortions disseminated about the "robber barons." She also comments on her relationship with Frank O'Connor, provides some autobiographical information and gives her perspective on the future of America.

Bush Aides Challenge Biden’s Boasts - by Bill Sammon

Bush Aides Challenge Biden’s Boasts by Bill Sammon

Apparently Vice President Joe Biden has been making outrageous claims of schooling – err - chastising President George W. Bush in years past, in a continuing effort by the Obama administration to differentiate itself from the previous administration by a series of colorful, if not fictional anecdotal invectives meant to vilify.

Many of the claims, especially those made on the recent European “apology tour” by President Barack Obama are mischaracterizations of the actions and approach by President Bush towards our European “allies.”

Of course, to be glib, if Europe is considered to be our “allies,” who needs enemies?

Lost in the all the rhetoric is the fact that Europe has not been truly helpful, except Britain and Estonia, in our efforts to curb global terrorism, because they have grown soft while being protected for decades by American military power – and ultimately, the American taxpayer.

While we pay for Europe’s defense, many European nations have diverted funding for their military to social programs, for which they cannot afford.

Also lost in the latest revisionist discussions over the previous Bush administration’s overtures to Europe to lend us a helping hand to help defend them from terrorists is the fact that several European nations, such as Germany, France and Russia, had no interest in helping us in Iraq because they were making too much money over the murderous and threatening regime of Saddam Hussein.

In the end, after all the hype by the sycophant elite media in the United States, President Obama flew home from the great apology tour with essentially nothing more than what help President Bush was able to accumulate.

Meanwhile, Vice President Biden has embarked upon a concurrent campaign to raise his own stature – and that of the Obama administration - by belittling the previous administration.

Can you imagine the outrage of the “Katie Couric’s” of the elite media if Vice President Dick Chaney were to have uttered such disparaging remarks about President Bill Clinton?

For that matter, could have you imagined the howls from the elite media if President Bush had gone to Europe and blamed much of the challenges of global terrorism on the politics of appeasement of the Clinton administration?

Meanwhile, while we are on the subject of double standards, remember when President Bush reached out to our European allies and got nothing but personal distain. President Obama came home from the apology tour with zilch – where are the personal recriminations from the elite media – as when President Bush came home empty-handed.

As an aside, let’s not overlook the efforts and help from our neighbor to the north, Canada, or our neighbors down-under, the Australians, which have been by our side from the beginning and remain there today.

Bush Aides Challenge Biden's Boasts of Oval Office Slapdowns By Bill Sammon FOXNews.com Thursday, April 09, 2009

Aides to former President George W. Bush are challenging the veracity of Vice President Joe Biden's claim this week of having privately castigated Bush, who does not remember the incident or an earlier episode in which Biden claims to have similarly rebuked Bush.

Biden spokesman Jay Carney declined to specify the dates of his boss's purported Oval Office scoldings of Bush. Nor would he provide witnesses or notes to corroborate the episodes.

"The vice president stands by his remarks," Carney told FOX News without elaboration.

Those remarks include a shot that Biden took at Bush on Tuesday.

"I remember President Bush saying to me one time in the Oval Office," Biden told CNN, "'Well, Joe,' he said, 'I'm a leader.' And I said: 'Mr. President, turn and around look behind you. No one is following.'"

That exchange never took place, according to numerous Bush aides who also dispute a similar assertion by Biden in 2004, when the former senator from Delaware told scores of Democratic colleagues that he had challenged Bush's moral certitude about the Iraq war during a private meeting in the Oval Office. Two years later, Biden repeated his story about dressing down the president.

Recalling the devastating Westminster fire of 1906 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

Posted in The Westminster Eagle www.explorecarroll.com 4/08/09

On April 6, 1906, the City of Westminster witnessed a devastating fire right in the heart of town.

Of all ironies, it occurred right next to where the fire station was located at that time, and destroyed the home and livery stable owned by Harry H. Harbaugh, a prominent Carroll County citizen.

The fire is known in history as The Palace Livery Stable Fire of 1906.

At one point, residents were concerned for not only the safety of the fire station, but also for the home of Westminster Mayor O. D. Gilbert (May 21, 1900 - May 18, 1908) and the St. John Catholic Church, all located nearby.

Also bear in mind, in those days the offices of the government of the city of Westminster were likely located in the fire station; and just to the east of the fire station was the main Carroll County offices and switchboard for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company.

So, as one can imagine, the fire caused a bit of commotion in town. If you are trying to place the location of the fire, today it's the area we now know as the Thomas S. Diffendal parking lot.

According to an article in the now defunct American Sentinel, the fire "destroyed about $25,000 worth of property and threatened, for a time, a widespread conflagration in this city ... (It) started 15 or 20 minutes before 3 o'clock."

The fire destroyed "22 horses, 45 vehicles, a large lot of harness, provender, household furniture and the wearing apparel of Mr. Harbaugh and his family," and caused as much as $5,000 worth of damage to the fire station.

"Of the horses which perished, 18 belonged to Mr. Harbaugh and one each to Mr. J. E. Hippie, Mr. Charles E. Goodwin, Dr. Thomas J. Coonan and the A.B.C. Bread and Pie Company."

"The fire started near the rear and the wind drove it toward the front with such rapidity that Mr. and Mrs. Harbaugh and their three little boys barely escaped with their lives, and had to flee barefooted and in their night clothing from the burning building.

"It had been in progress for perhaps 20 minutes before it was discovered, when it was too late to make any effort to rescue the horses, most of which were probably suffocated before an alarm was sounded..."

"The heat from the burning stable ignited the window frames of the Firemen's Building and the flames spread into its interior, greatly endangering the structure. Only the almost superhuman efforts of the firemen saved if from destruction...

"Much of the surrounding property was in danger, blazing flakes from the burning stables having been carried for quite a distance, and having fallen on the roofs of many houses, in some instances igniting them. Fortunately shingle roofs were damp and householders watched, with hose and other means at hand, to suppress the first beginnings of a blaze thereon."

It's interesting to note that in those days, newspaper accounts of fires more often than not included the name of the insurance company and the representative:

Harbaugh's property "was insured in the sum of $6,500, in companies represented by Mr. Charles E. Goodwin's insurance agency."

As for the fire station; the "extent of the damage to the building by fire and water is from $8,000 to $5,000, the loss being fully covered by insurance in the Carroll County and Dug Hill Companies and in companies represented by Mr. J. H. Fuss and others."

The article also mentioned that "this was the most disastrous fire in this city since the great conflagration of April 9, 1883, when 17 or 18 buildings, including Grace Lutheran Church and parsonage, were destroyed and two lives were lost."

Fortunately, we are blessed in Carroll County with many fine volunteer fire companies and dedicated individuals who take time away from their families to protect all of us.

As a matter of fact, the 1906 newspaper article noted:

"As usual, the firemen deserve special commendation for their energetic efforts to protect and save property from destruction. A visitor from Baltimore, who witnessed their work, was overheard to remark that they far surpassed the firemen of that city in efficiency. Citizens residing in the vicinity supplied them with hot coffee while they were engaged in their arduous duty..."

Fire safety remains a serious concern for out community even today. Just last Saturday, my wife, Miss Caroline, Westminster firefighter Bob Ruby and I staffed a fire prevention and safety booth at the William Winchester Elementary School Spring Carnival.

It is never too early to start teaching your children fire safety. As history shows us -- it's everyone's concern and it can be a matter of life and death.
