Bus Trip to Riversdale and Hillwood
Thursday, September 17

Our morning destination is Riversdale, a National Historic Landmark plantation home built between 1801 and 1807. Construction of the elegant manor house was begun by Henri Stier, a Flemish aristocrat, and completed by his daughter, Rosalie, and her husband George Calvert, grandson of the fifth Lord Baltimore. The house remained in the Calvert family until 1887. A restoration of the house to its appearance during the period of Rosalie and George Calvert's occupancy, 1801-1838, began in 1988 after the discovery of Rosalie Calvert's letters in the family archives in Belgium.
After our tour of Riversdale, we head to Washington for a visit to Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens. Lunch will be in Hillwood's Café. Lunch choices are: Petite Tarragon Chicken Sandwich (chicken and red grapes tossed with tarragon mayonnaise on croissants), Albacore Tuna Sandwich (albacore tuna on croissants with lettuce and tomato), or the Piedmont (tomatoes on focaccia with fresh Mozzarella, olive oil and garlic). All come with a salad, dessert and beverage.

Then, spend the afternoon on a self-guided tour of Hillwood. Marjorie Merriweather Post acquired Hillwood in 1955 and began to create a series of pleasure gardens for her leisure and the entertainment of her guests. The mansion was renovated to provide easy access to the outdoors, with terraces and porches on all sides. The museum features the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia and a world-renowned collection of eighteenth-century French decorative art and furnishings. The collection includes Fabergé eggs, Russian porcelain, Russian Orthodox icons, Beauvais tapestries and Sèvres porcelain. View the exhibitions, wander the gardens, visit the museum shop - the choice is yours.

Cost for the trip
(includes transportation, admissions and lunch)
$70 for HSCC members
$80 for non-members

The Ghost of Legh Master
Box Lunch Talk and Book Signing
Tuesday, October 13
12:00 - 1:30
American Legion, Carroll Post #31

The Historical Society is pleased to announce the publication of a new book about one of Carroll County's most notorious citizens, Legh Master. The Ghost of Legh Furnace by G. Donald Riley, Jr., examines Legh Master's life and character to determine if he really deserves the sinister reputation history has bestowed upon him.

For over two centuries, ghost stories prevailed in Frederick and later Carroll County, Maryland, describing the evil deeds of Legh Master. He allegedly pushed one of his slaves into a blast furnace during a jealous rage. Legh Master appeared at night riding his gray horse through the woods with a white sheet over his head and shoulders yelling "stick stuck," scaring his neighbors.

Legh Master, a wealthy English gentleman, arrived in Frederick County near Westminster in 1770-1771 where he invested in six thousand acres of land and an iron furnace. During the Revolutionary War, Master, a Tory, sailed to the Bahama Islands leaving his wife and daughter in Baltimore to find their way back to England. Riley follows Master's footsteps during the war and after he returned to Frederick County in 1782.

The first day of sale for The Ghost of Legh Furnace, published by the Historical Society and printed by Graphics Universal, will be October 13. On that day, the author will present a lecture about Legh Master at the Box Lunch Talk and will be available to sign copies of the book. After that date, the book will be available for purchase in the Shop at Cockey's. Cover price is $15; HSCC members receive a 10% discount.

Bus Trip to George Washington's Mount Vernon
Thursday, October 22
Join HSCC on October 22 for a very special trip to the most visited site in America - George Washington's Mount Vernon. The estate includes the Mansion house, slave quarters, kitchen, stables, greenhouse, four different gardens, the Forest Trail and a four-acre working farm that includes a re-creation of Washington's 16-sided treading barn.

For most of the day, everyone will be free to plan their own schedule. The Mansion house features original furnishings and items owned by the Washington family and is shown as it was in 1799, based on an inventory made when George Washington died.
The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center and the Ford Orientation Center include 25 new theaters and galleries that tell the story of George Washington's life. Wreathlaying ceremonies are held daily at George and Martha Washington's tomb. A variety of museum shops throughout the estate offer a wide assortment of books, gifts and collectibles.

Lunch is on your own at Mount Vernon. The Food Court at Mount Vernon includes burgers, deli sandwiches, baked goods, pizza, ice cream and more. Relax in the glass-enclosed Pavilion or sit on the terrace. The Mount Vernon Inn restaurant is available for a more elegant, sit-down lunch.

In mid-afternoon, the group will travel to George Washington's distillery and gristmill. Washington erected a large stone gristmill in 1771 to produce high quality flour and cornmeal for export to the West Indies, England and Europe. In 1797, Washington built a whiskey distillery adjacent to the gristmill. The distillery was the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799, making it one of the most successful economic enterprises at Mount Vernon.

Cost for the trip (includes transportation and admissions)
$65 for HSCC members
$75 for non-members
Reservations are required by October 9

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 28, 2009

Female Bank Robber Sought In Carroll County

(Union Mills, MD) – Maryland State Police are searching for a female suspect who robbed a northern Carroll County bank this afternoon.

The suspect is described as a white female, possibly in her mid to late 50’s, approximately 5’4” tall and weighing about 220 pounds. She was wearing glasses, a blue shirt, and a blue rain jacket.

Just before 4:00 p.m. today, Maryland State Police were called to the PNC Bank in the 3400-block of Littlestown Pike, Union Mills, Md., for the report of a bank robbery. Arriving troopers were told that moments before, the suspect had walked into the bank alone and handed a note to a teller. The note said the suspect was armed and she was demanding money.

The suspect was given an undisclosed amount of cash. She left the bank without displaying a weapon. None of the employees in the bank were injured.

The suspect was last seen leaving the parking lot in a blue sport utility vehicle with Pennsylvania tags. She headed south on Rt. 97, then made a left on Old Hanover Road.

Troopers issued a lookout for the suspect and vehicle which included law enforcement authorities in Pennsylvania. Maryland state troopers and Carroll County deputies searched the area for the suspect vehicle, but did not locate it. The search is continuing.

Anyone who may have seen the suspect or suspect vehicle, or has any information about this robbery is urged to contact Trooper First Class Winkler, of the Westminster Barracks Criminal Investigation Section, at 410-386-3054. Calls may be kept confidential.

PolitiFact: Our first parental advisory on a Truth-O-Meter item

Welcome to the new Politifact

We don't expect there are too many kids reading PolitiFact, but just in case, we put a parental advisory on an item we published about Rush Limbaugh. Rush earned a Pants on Fire.

We've also got lots of new items, including:
  • Howard Dean was wrong that Medicare and Social Security were passed without any Republican votes. We also used another statement by Dean to explore the truth about "rationing" in health care. The truth is that there is rationing under our current health care system and there would also be rationing under the reform plan.
  • George Will had a perfect record of True ratings until he twisted the details of stimulus spending and earned a Barely True.
  • Michael Steele was ridiculously wrong with his claim that a VA brochure encourages suicide. Steele earns a Pants on Fire.

Thanks for all the entries for PolitiFact goodies. We'll be sending T-shirts and mousepads and ashtrays to the winners next week.

We're also starting a new giveaway for people who suggest facts we should check. If we end up checking a fact you suggest (send them to truthometer@politifact.com), we'll send you a T-shirt. So keep the suggestions coming.

Cheers,

Baltimore & Mayor Dixon Are Targets Of Hoax

BALTIMORE (WJZ) Aug 28, 2009 4:54 pm US/Eastern

The mayor and some journalists are mad at a man who used Baltimore to take a satirical look at the crime in England.

As Mike Schuh reports, the city is now looking at taking legal action.

Last week, an English politician compared a crime-ridden city in England with the Baltimore seen in the TV show, "The Wire."

It appeared Mayor Sheila Dixon struck back via her city webpage Thursday. The Baltimore Sun and two leading British newspapers, The Guardian and The Independent, published her quote.

While most of the news coverage has focused on Sen. Solar Panels Built into Roads Could be the Future of Energy Sadly, the link is no dead…. 10/28/2019

The Department of Energy just gave $100,000 to upstart company Solar Roadways, to develop 12-by-12-foot solar panels, dubbed “Solar Roads,” that can be embedded into roads, pumping power into the grid. The panels may also feature LED road warnings and built-in heating elements that could prevent roads from freezing.

Mythologizing and romanticizing the 1960s

Mythologizing and romanticizing the 1960s and the great-unwashed self-importance of the Woodstock Generation

August 26, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Several folks have called to my attention the “wonderful 1960s,” “Camelot,” and the “Woodstock Generation,” in relationship with Senator Kennedy’s passing.

Oh please give me a break.

For older conservatives, there comes with Senator Kennedy’s death, a certain uninvited nostalgia that comes with the passing of an era.

The coverage of his life and times uncomfortably reminds older baby boomers of the difficult 1960s and the horrific consequences bestowed upon the Kennedy family, society and the nation as a result of that decade – as the retrospectives about Senator Kennedy’s life are played out before us in the media.

The polite and reverential praise for the life and accomplishments of Senator Kennedy may be more appropriate for those more qualified.

I’m sad and reflective about the passing of Senator Kennedy but I, for one, have little in the way of good sociological, political, or historical memories about the 1960s – or the 1970s, for that matter.

And I certainly cannot romanticize either Woodstock – or the “Woodstock Generation,” of which the gratuitous coverage was mercifully overcome by the Obamas on vacation in paradise and Senator Kennedy’s passing.

It has been a banner year for the baby boomer generation and much of the media to narcissistically utilize the cracked mirror by which it views its navel.

A casual objective observer could conclude that 1969 - 40 years ago - was the only year in which much of anything happened in the 1960s. Of course, there are some children of the 60s that can’t remember any of it …

At best the recent overindulgent coverage of Woodstock certainly fell somewhere between zeal and monomania. In case you were mercifully on vacation and missed the gratuitous visual displays on television; it was forty years ago that the weekend of peace, love, and revolution took place at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre farm in upstate New York.

The media has waxed poetically about the self-aggrandizing maniacal mayhem which took place August 15-18, 1969 - the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in Bethel, N.Y.

The retro-revisionist nostalgic meanderings about Woodstock gratuitously dusted-off all the grainy pictures of nearly a half-million people wallowing in mud, filth, and debris in various stages of losing their clothes – and their minds.

For those with a doctorate in modern anxiety and a minor in ennui; remember the iconic “naked woman stands up in the crowd during the 1969 Woodstock festival..,” or all the naked people sliding in the mud or swimming in the pond.

“Cue the superannuated hippies!,” wrote Greig Dymond, in a piece for CBC News titled, “Can we please stop mythologizing Woodstock?”

“Roll the archival tape of wasted, hairy people sliding through the mud! … We’re in the dog days of August and this is a feel-good story news channels can use to kill significant time. Weren’t those flower children cute? And so idealistic!”

Ay caramba.

Perhaps the New York Times music critic Jon Pareles summed it up best: “Baby boomers won’t let go of the Woodstock Festival. Why should we? It’s one of the few defining events of the late 1960s that had a clear happy ending.”

I was amused to read what Emily Brobrow wrote in the “More Intelligent Life” section of The Economist:

“There is something so tiresome about baby boomers waxing on about their own unwashed importance, squeezing out every last penny from marketing their memories. Yet it's hard not to feel moved by all of the manipulatively wistful slideshows and soundtracks.”

Moved? Nothing to see here folks except Jimi Hendrix playing the “Star Spangled Banner,” let’s move along. Me, I was moved to watch a lot of the Food Channel.

...Catanese calls these nuggets of TV gold “bottom-feeder” ads, but he got us thinking about a few of our favorite low-budget, barely functional product plugs.

Doc Bottom’s Aspray
The inspiration for this list must be seen in its entirety. Pay special attention to the lo-fi neon green gas that represents stink all over.

Slap Chop
Never mind slimy pitchman Vince Shlomi’s
legal problems (he’s charged with beating up a prostitute in Miami), but respect his enthusiasm for this dicer and “stop having a boring life.” Please don’t forget the remix.

Loud ‘n Clear
This budget-level hearing aid disguised as a cell phone headset enhances bingo, card games and church, but doubles as a spy device. Watch as an innocent looking woman eavesdrops on her neighbors! If only this bulky ear contraption was a bit more inconspicuous…

Cheers To You!
Feeling down on yourself? Pop in this eight track CD and revel in the cheering crowd and vacuous inspirational talk.

ShamWow!
Sure, it’s the second Vince Shlomi entry in this list, but the man’s power of persuasion is irrefutable. We could almost see placing an order for this oddly practical super-absorbent rag.

Snuggie
Ah, what else can we say about the storied blanket with sleeves? We know it doubles a warm garment and cult uniform, and we’ve been over its epitomization of American laziness, but the commercial just never gets old!
