New year means a new city attorney in Westminster

Levan and Ruff retained to take place of longtime attorney John Walsh

By Kevin Dayhoff Posted http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/3801/attorneys/ 1/12/10 http://tinyurl.com/yeqxmcb

The new year for Westminster city government will begin with new municipal attorneys for the first time in 30 years.

At the first meeting of the Westminster mayor and Common Council for 2010, the city announced the appointment of Elissa Levan and Karen Plumer Ruff to take the place of Westminster city attorney John Walsh, who retired in December after serving for more than 30 years.

The city’s process for finding a new attorney began last November. Westminster council president Damian Halstad introduced both attorneys who were in attendance for the council meeting.

“We welcome them and look forward to a long relationship because we sure don't like interviewing lawyers,” he quipped. “The last one we kept for what, 30 years?”

Levan and Karen Plumer Ruff are both from Funk & Bolton, P.A., a Mid-Atlantic-based law firm practicing primarily in commercial litigation, insurance regulation, government relations, local government law and creditors' rights.

Cliff Cumber, Bryan Sears, Meg Tully, and Carl Jung

January 5, 2010 by Kant BeTrue

Cliff Cumber recently said: “wonders at the universe and the new possibilities it throws up with seemingly effortless synchronicity.”

Sounds Jungian as in Carl Gustav Jung….

Over the many years of time travel, Mr. Cumber has been greatly influenced by Jungian concepts of synchronicity.

To understand why that is, one needs to go as far back in history as 1967.

It was in that year that Mr. Cumber and Dr. Jung first met quite accidently on March 30, 1967 at a photo shoot when they both appeared together on the cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album which was later released June 1, 1967.

Mr. Cumber may be found to the right of Edgar Allen Poe. Dr. Jung appears to the left of Mr. Poe.

Of course the odd thing about their happenstance meeting was Dr. Jung had died six years earlier on June 6, 1961. Perhaps it’s a “synchronicity” thing?

It was after the photo shoot that Mr. Cumber and Dr. Jung first discussed synchronicity at great length.

The Jungian theory of synchronicity had been introduced to Mr. Cumber by Sting in December 1982 when “The Police” were recording its last alum, appropriately titled, “Synchronicity,” which was released on June 1, 1983.

Once again the apparent non-linear chronology, so essential to the theory of synchronicity is probability the explanation for why Sting and Mr. Cumber discussed synchronicity in 1982; which precipitated Mr. Cumber to explore the theory with Dr. Jung in 1967, six years after he had died.

I hope that you are still following along carefully. If you are having some difficulty, it is suggested that you speak with Bryan Sears.

Why Mr. Sears, you ask? Well Mr. Sears was with Mr. Cumber at the March 30, 1967 photo shoot for the album cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

As a matter of fact, Mr. Sears is also pictured on the top row. He is the fourth person to the right of Mr. Cumber between the Vargas Girl and the actor Huntz Hall. And yes, that is Bob Dylan at the end of the row to the right of Mr. Sears.

And yes that is also Frederick New-Post reporter Meg Tully on the top row, the fifth person to the left of Mr. Cumber.

As it happens, Mr. Cumber and Ms. Tully were with the backup singers in the song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” and that explains how they were invited to be on the album cover.

No one knows why Mr. Sears was there, but it has been said of Mr. Sears, he’s everywhere, he’s everywhere.

According to Paul Levy, who wrote an essay, “Catching the Bug of Synchronicity,” about Jungian synchronicity in the web publication Reality Sandwich:

“Synchronicities are those moments of "meaningful coincidence" when the boundary dissolves between the inner and the outer. At the synchronistic moment, just like a dream, our internal, subjective state appears, as if materialized in, as and through the outside world.

“Touching the heart of our being, synchronicities are moments in time in which there is a fissure in the fabric of what we have taken for reality and there is a bleed through from a higher dimension outside of time.

“Synchronicities are expressions of the dreamlike nature of reality, as they are moments in time when the timeless, dreamlike nature of the universe shines forth its radiance and openly reveals itself to us, offering us an open doorway to lucidity.”

Now that you have this additional background, one may only be sure that the purpose of life is to discuss synchronicities and its relationship with fragmentary patchworks of autochthonous and foreign elements as juxtaposed by the undeniable command mortality of insignificant self-inflicted syntactic semiotic economics which sometimes may cause irreproducible results unless there is a pre-emptive digital fallibility matrix which would require an integrated third-generational triangulated refinement of indefinite managerial potential.

Thank you for your non-linear time. Have a nice day before yesterday and beyond. Playing the drums and chanting is optional.

A message from President Barack Obama about “The Earthquake in Haiti”

from President Barack Obama

date Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 3:59 PM

subject The Earthquake in Haiti

Good Afternoon,

The reports and images from Haiti of collapsed hospitals, crumbled homes, and men and women carrying their injured neighbors through the streets are truly heart-wrenching. As we learn more about the extent of the devastation, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and Haitian Americans around our country who do not yet know the fate of their families and loved ones back home.

I have directed my Administration to respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives. The people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States Government in the urgent effort to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and to deliver the humanitarian relief -- the food, water and medicine -- that Haitians will need in the coming days.

This is also a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share, and Americans have always responded to these situations with generosity of spirit. If you would like to support the urgent humanitarian effort in Haiti, I encourage you to visit our website where you can learn more about how to contribute:

http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake

Americans trying to locate family members in Haiti are encouraged to contact the State Department at (888) 407-4747.

We will continue to stand with the people of Haiti and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Howard Kurtz: A look at Tucker Carlson's the Daily Caller

Media Notes: A look at Tucker Carlson's political Web site, the Daily Caller

By Howard Kurtz Monday, January 11, 2010; C01

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/10/AR2010011002388.html?nav=rss_opinion/columns

"We need a roundup of the weirdness," Tucker Carlson shouted, walking past a row of young staffers hunched over laptops on the sort of cheap- looking teak tables that scream start-up venture.

The Fox News commentator launches his new Web site, the
Daily Caller, on Monday. His partner is Neil Patel, a former Dick Cheney aide. His opinion editor is Moira Bagley, who spent 2008 as the Republican National Committee's press secretary. And his $3 million in funding comes from Wyoming financier Foster Friess, a big-time GOP donor.

But Carlson insists this won't be a right-wing site: "I don't feel guilty about or ashamed in any way of saying we'll cover the people in power," he says, dismissing the capital's Republicans as "totally powerless."

"Our goal is not to get Republicans elected. Our goal is to explain what your government is doing. We're not going to suck up to people in power, the way so many have. There's been an enormous amount of throne-sniffing," he says, a sly grin beneath the mop of brown hair. "It's disgusting."

When he announced the Daily Caller last spring, Carlson was more explicit about its ideology, telling Human Events the site would be "opposed to what's going on" under President Obama -- "a radical increase in federal power . . . a version of socialism."

Investigative Voice: Marylanders apply for unemployment benefits in record numbers

JOBLESS — Marylanders apply for unemployment benefits in record numbers

43.5 PERCENT SURGE OVER 2008 By Stephen Janis

Marylanders seeking unemployment benefits from the state applied in record numbers in December, state officials said this week.

Even as the national economy begins a faltering recovery, the number of Marylanders applying for unemployment benefits surged at the end of 2009 to more than 48,000 — the highest number since 1974 — according to Bernie Kohn, spokesman for the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, the agency that administers the state’s unemployment insurance fund.

“We had more claims in the month of December than any month since 1974,” Kohn said.

The December surge caps a year (2009) when roughly 416,000 Marylanders applied for unemployment benefits, a 28 percent increase over the same period the previous year (2008) when roughly 290,000 state residents applied. The surge comes as the state prepares to tap $125 million in federal aid to keep the fund solvent through April.

The total 2009 increase in applications represents a 43.5 percent surge over figures for calendar year 2008.

A Message from the Governor

A Message from the Governor

January 13, 2010

427th Legislative Session

Today, the 427th Maryland General Assembly convened for its 90-day legislative session.

Our task as public servants, as Marylanders, and as Americans is to continue making the choices and connections that will allow our families to get through these tough times even stronger. As I know you'll agree, there is no government program that is as important and empowering as a job that allows a family to raise their kids with dignity and respect and a roof over their heads. In these tough times, everything we accomplish this legislative session must be seen through the lens of whether or not it creates jobs, protects jobs, or improves the environment for creating and protecting jobs.

And it begins with maintaining the era of fiscal responsibility we returned to Annapolis. Rather than increasing spending, for the first time since the Great Depression, spending levels are less today than they were four years ago – and state spending has reduced $4.6 billion under our Administration. Maryland remains one of only seven states that continue to defend a Triple A Bond rating – a measure of fiscal responsibility certified by all three major agencies.

Every year for the past three years, we've submitted a budget that is not only balanced, but that comes in within the spending affordability guidelines. It is all with the goal and the motive and purpose of maintaining fiscal responsibility so we can make progress on schools, progress on public safety, progress that strengthens and grows our middle class and creates more opportunity for hardworking people in our State

Martin O'Malley

The Tentacle : Spontaneous Incompetence by Kevin E. Dayhoff January 13, 2010

In an incident, almost totally ignored by the dominant United States major news media, comes word that an American hero, the renown Army Green Beret-turned-Iraq/Afghanistan war correspondent, Michael Yon, was “arrested” January 5 as he entered the country for failing to disclose his income.

No, as unbelievable as it may seem, I am not making this up.

The news comes barely 10 days after a 23-year-old Nigerian named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was essentially given a pass by authorities to fly about the country, as a result of bureaucratic bungling of byzantine proportions, with a bomb in his pants which he planned to kill nearly 300 airplane passengers on Christmas Day.

It is in this context that Mr. Yon, the award-winning American combat-journalist, wrote on his Facebook page at 11:05 A.M. January 5:

“Got arrested at the Seattle airport for refusing to say how much money I make... Their videos and audios should show that I was polite, but simply refused questions that had nothing to do with national security….”

[…]

According to Aleksandra Kulczuga, writing for the web publication, The Daily Caller, [http://dailycaller.com/] Mr. Yon said: “I was caught off-guard by the question [about my income]…” Yon, an American citizen traveling on an American passport, said he cooperated fully when asked standard security questions about what was in his suitcase: “I was on better-than-normal behavior.”

[…]

For those who are not familiar with Mr. Yon, there is no better place to start than with his web publication, “Michael Yon Online Magazine,” http://www.michaelyon-online.com/...

Annapolis diverts sister city funding

Annapolis Mayor Cohen Diverts Sister City Funding to Reduce Budget Deficit

Annapolis, MD (01-12-10) – As part of his continuing effort to attack the city's financial deficit, Mayor Joshua J. Cohen announced today that he is redirecting the $27,500 remaining in the Sister Cities program to the general fund for the current fiscal year.

"Now is not the time to be spending $27,500 on the Sister Cities program when we are struggling even to fund essential services," said Mayor Cohen, whose administration is focused on eliminating an estimated $6.5 million budget deficit for FY 2011.

The Mayor also is convening a group of community stakeholders to review the Sister Cities program and recommend ways to explore public/private partnerships that would provide long-term benefit to the city.

"A strategically thought-out international exchange program has the potential to add value to our economic development efforts, as well as our educational and cultural institutions within the city," Mayor Cohen said. "It is time to take the Sister Cities program out from under the umbrella of city government and make it a more community-based initiative."

Individuals who have accepted the Mayor's invitation to review the Sister Cities program and make recommendations include:

Linnell Bowen, Executive Director, Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts
Reginald Broddie, Chief Professional Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County
Bob Burdon, President and CEO, Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce
Connie Del Signore, President and CEO, Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference & Visitors Bureau
Kevin Maxwell, Superintendent, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Joe Rubino, Director of Governmental Affairs, U.S. Naval Academy

Annapolis first began as a Sister City in 1980, partnering with Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada. Since then, Annapolis has partnered with many other cities, including Wexford, Ireland; Dumfries, Scotland; Tallin, Estonia; Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Rochefort, France; Richmond, North Yorkshire; and Newport, Wales.

To My Darling Husband, I had a small accident with your pickup

--To My Darling Husband,

Before you return from your business trip, I just want you to know about the small accident I had with the pickup truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me.

I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pickup fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car.

I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart.

I am enclosing a picture for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again.

Your loving wife.
XOXOXOXOXO

P.S. Your Girlfriend Called.
