Amedori Challenges Fellow Republican Candidates To Join Her Petition To Stop Reconciliation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 9, 2010

AMEDORI CHALLENGES FELLOW REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES TO JOIN HER PETITION TO STOP RECONCILIATION

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, called upon her fellow Republican United States Senate candidates to join her online petition asking for Senator Barbara Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation for Obamacare.

“We need to present a united front on the most pressing issue confronting our state and country right now. And that issue is the forcing down our throats of health care reform. I ask my fellow Republican candidates to join with me on sending a message to the incumbent that she should vote no on reconciliation,” said Amedori.

Yesterday Amedori launched an online petition collecting names of people across the states who also want to encourage Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation. “I am pleased with the results so far, but we still need more people to join this effort. It will be close to impossible to turn the clock back if Obamacare is passed. Even with the House and Senate being controlled by Republicans in 2011, the President will still be able to veto any repeals. That’s why Marylanders need to have their voices heard now,” stated Amedori.

Reconciliation is not the method to pass health care reform. This parliamentary maneuver has never been used for such a sweeping piece of legislation,” said Amedori. “The President’s plan for health care reform is seriously flawed. That’s why no one elected Republican Senator will support the legislation.”

Reconciliation has been used 19 times since 1980. 12 of those times the procedure was used to pass omnibus budget bills that had an overwhelming support in the Senate. Only on 2 occasions the budget bills were controversial enough to lack bipartisan support.

“I hope that my fellow candidates will join my effort. This is one of the most important legislative fights in our lifetime. Our differences on other issues should be put aside to send the strongest message possible to the incumbent who is listens more to Harry Reid than the people of Maryland. It is time to put Maryland first. No on reconciliation,” said Amedori.

Amedori thinks that her fellow Republican candidates are not focused on the here and now with the circulation of the unity pledge. “We are facing a massive government takeover of health care and they are talking about unity after the Primary. Let’s be united on an issue that matters,” added Amedori.

Carmen Amedori - I am a candidate for the US Senate because:

I am a candidate for the US Senate because, like you, I am sick and tired of the Big Government in our wallets. Like you, I am sick and tired of the wasteful spending inside the beltway. It is time to send the incumbents home. It is time to have new ideas and fresh blood to help return the government to the side of We The People.

I was born and raised in Baltimore until age 15, at which time my family moved to Baltimore County. I have resided in Carroll County for 30 years. Before entering politics, I was employed as a journalist with The Baltimore Sun and The Carroll County Times, while raising two children.

From 1999 thru 2004, I had the honor to represent the citizens of Carroll County in the MD House of Delegates and served the entire time on the Judiciary Committee. During my tenure, I was Deputy Minority Whip and Assistant Minority Leader.

In 2004, then Governor Robert Ehrlich appointed me to the Maryland Parole Commission where I served until Dec. 2009 when my appointment expired. I am the very proud Mother of two daughters; Nicole, 30 and Kara, 27.

20100304 I am a candidate for the US Senate because

Steve Berryman: Just getting started

Frederick News-Post Steve Berryman: Just getting started

Best wishes go out to my fellow Tentacle colleague, Steve Berryman, who is “Just Getting Started” with a weekly column every Friday in the Frederick News-Post.

The column may be found here:. http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/opinion/display_columnist.htm?StoryID=102092

If one cruises through the comments that accompany his column on the News-Post web site, you will realize that this is going to be fun. It appears that there are many folks out there who are quite threatened by the mere idea that Mr. Berryman will be sharing his point of view in the Frederick news and commentary scene.

All the while, please understand that his initial toe-in-the-piranha filled waters that pass for meaningful commentary in central-Maryland these days, hardly states a position. Yet the personal attacks quickly began.

Not much in the way of counter-point or meaningful and welcome fact-filled disagreement. Just hate-filled venomous commentary.

Whatever.

Mr. Berryman begins his column with:

“As we are all in this together, it is my pleasure to write you my introductory column. Mea culpas in advance as this is meant to be explanatory, and not "ruthless self-promotion"! Aspects of my activist roles have made that necessary in the past.

"Each Friday my regular musings on this opinion page will usher in a weekend for you and, I hope, find you then better informed, possibly more enlightened, and certainly more awake for the reading.

"As a citizen-journalist, being selected to have a recurring voice was an honor, and a bit of a surprise, as in the past I have to admit to being something of an "equal opportunity provocateur" in my relations with The
Frederick News-Post. Seems they were listening!

"My comments have appeared in many a columnist's and story writer's in-basket through online capabilities in the electronic versions of this newspaper. Please note that almost all of these comments clearly included my name, as I believe that anonymity confers a certain disrespect for civility..."

Maryland State Police said yesterday that that a Carroll County man who was arrested in Georgia on March 3 for allegedly assaulting his wife with a hammer the previous night, will be brought back to Maryland today.

Anthony T. Soligny, 33, of the unit-block of Grapes View Drive, New Windsor is currently being detained in the Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville, Georgia charged with attempted murder, first and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

In an exclusive telephone interview with the Franklin County Sheriff Steve D. Thomas said this afternoon that Soligny “is still in our jail at this point… GBI (the Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and our officers have interviewed him…

Shortly after we received the look out for a silver Dodge truck with Maryland tags, “one of our deputies spotted him. We were happy to get him (Soligny) off the streets…,” said Thomas

The “vehicle was traveling south bound on I-85 in Franklin County Georgia. Franklin County Sheriff's unit received (a) broadcast (in) reference to a silver dodge pickup with Maryland plates 00V129 wanted for a homicide in Maryland,” wrote Thomas in a later e-mail.

The “officer had only received the lookout approx 5 to 10 (minutes) before the silver Dodge came by (the) officer’s location… Deputy ran the tag and it was the vehicle wanted from Maryland… Deputy waited for his backup to arrive and officers pulled over vehicle and deputies arrested Soligny without incident.

“As Sheriff of Franklin County I feel that the deputies did a class A job of being very observance and I am very proud of my officers for getting a person like this off the highway…

Sources close to the family have reported that at first Soligny was going to fight extradition, but quickly changed his mind.

“Soligny has signed extradition and is waiting in the Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville Georgia for Maryland State Police to pick him up some time this week,” said Thomas in the e-mail.

In a telephone interview Westminster Barrack G commander Lt. Andrew Winner said that troopers will be traveling to the Franklin County Detention Center on Tuesday and will bring him back to Maryland to face charges.

Meanwhile, the victim of the attack is still recuperating from serious injuries, according to several family friends who asked to not be identified. One friend of the victim called to say thanks for not identifying the victim. “(T)he events that happened to her and her children are chilling and horrifying,” said the family friend in an e-mail.

Obama Appointment Has Castro Ties

March 8, 2010 Obama Appointment Has Castro Ties

President Obama made a terrible mistake nominating Mari Del Carmen Aponte to be ambassador to El Salvador. Aside from the fact that Aponte has given tens of thousands of dollars to Democrats, why would Obama waste more political capital trying to get this controversial and incompetent nominee into government?

Nearly a dozen years ago, President Clinton nominated Aponte to be ambassador to the Dominican Republic. Several months later, her nomination was withdrawn because Aponte did not wish to answer Senators' tough questions about her past.

Aponte's biggest problem was her eight-year relationship with Roberto Tamayo, a man who was friendly with and indisputably in regular contact with Cuban intelligence. Some have even called him a spy. Tamayo loaned Aponte money, which allegedly came from the Cuban intelligence service; and Aponte never repaid the loan.

A Cuban defector once even asserted that Cuban intelligence wished to recruit Aponte. Of course, she denied any knowledge of Cuban intelligence efforts to recruit her.

The FBI questioned Aponte about her contact with Cuban intelligence, and she gave somewhat inconsistent answers. The FBI then requested that she take a polygraph test, but she refused saying that she was not subject to a background check.

These are hardly the actions of a trustworthy public servant who has nothing to hide. Over the objections of career personnel at the State Department, she received her top-secret security clearance — after all, she was a good friend of Hillary Clinton.

Regardless of the truth about her dealings with her boyfriend and his connections to Cuban intelligence, Aponte would seem to have divided loyalties. Although she has experience serving as an ambassador, she previously represented the "country" of Puerto Rico in the United States.

That's right, from 2001 to 2004, Aponte served as the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration. In this cabinet-level role, she represented the governor of Puerto Rico in the United States. It appears that she viewed herself as an ambassador to the United States. At an official gathering in 2003, she referred to Puerto Rico as a "country." And this was no slip-of-the-tongue: several days later her office issued a press release calling her office building in D.C. an "embassy."

But even if we were to set these loyalty concerns aside, there are still plenty of troubling things about Aponte's record. Her record conclusively shows her to be both radical and incompetent.

She has served on the boards of the National Council of La Raza, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (now LatinoJustice PRLDEF), Democracia USA, and PODER PAC. La Raza (the Race) and LatinoJustice PRLDEF both advocate for rights for illegal immigrants, among other things.

Democracia USA is a group founded by the radical People for the American Way. Like ACORN, Democracia USA has been accused of voter registration fraud. PODER PAC is a discriminatory group that only supports liberal, female, Hispanic Democrats. Fittingly, its slogan is "by Latinas, for Latinas." This slogan is not far from the slogan of the blatantly racist group Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA), which is, "For The Race everything. Outside The Race nothing."

Aponte is also a member of the Belizean Grove, and she recommended Justice Sonia Sotomayor for membership. Of course, Sotomayor quit the females-only club before her Senate confirmation.

But even if we set aside concerns about Aponte's loyalty and her radicalism, she still has a disturbing record of incompetence. For example, she served on the board of the United Way of America as its president, Bill Aramony, lived a lavish lifestyle, and funneled United Way's money to his family and cronies.

What was the board's reaction as the problems came to light? After an internal investigation, the board unanimously offered its support for Aramony and attributed the problems to sloppiness and inattention to detail. Ultimately, Aramony went to prison, and the lackadaisical board was shaken up after local chapters withheld their dues to the national organization.

Aponte was a partner at a minority law firm that routinely changed its name partners — five times over the course of six years. At one point, the firm owed the IRS $1 million in back taxes. Eventually, the firm collapsed, and a creditor sued for $1 million claiming that the firm had filed fraudulent documents to obtain money.

The business license of Aponte & Tsaknis, another firm at which she served as partner, was revoked. Aponte was the registered agent for the firm. Furthermore, she was managing partner of KJN/DC, an advertising firm, whose business license was also revoked.

Finally, Aponte served as an unofficial advisor to the unpopular, one-term mayor of Washington, D.C., Sharon Pratt. Presumably, Aponte's relationship with Pratt helped her land a seat on the board of the University of the District of Columbia. Throughout Aponte's time on the board, the university was beset by problems.

There is certainly enough in Aponte's past for Senators to justify placing holds and demanding recorded roll call votes on this controversial nominee, whose radicalism on display, loyalty concerns, and incompetence are just another example of this Administration's astounding arrogance.

Michael Barone - Low-tax Texas beats big-government California

Texas is a different story. Texas has low taxes -- and no state income taxes -- and a much smaller government. Its legislature meets for only 90 days every two years, compared with California's year-round legislature. Its fiscal condition is sound. Public employee unions are weak or nonexistent.

But Texas seems to be delivering superior services. Its teachers are paid less than California's. But its test scores -- and with a demographically similar school population -- are higher. California's once fabled freeways are crumbling and crowded. Texas has built gleaming new highways in metro Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth.

In the meantime, Texas' economy has been booming. Unemployment rates have been below the national average for more than a decade, as companies small and large generate new jobs.

Chris Stirewalt - Iraqis may prove war was a mistake worth making

Our forefathers had to wait 12 years after the Declaration of Independence to have their first direct congressional elections. The Iraqis have now completed their second legislative elections in just seven years.

It would not have been possible without the unstinting sacrifices of the American military and the support of the citizens of the United States. But neither would it have been possible without the sheer cussedness of the Iraqis.

David Freddoso - Bankers don't need another senator, Obama said. Except in Illinois.

Bankers don't need another vote in the United States Senate," President Obama said as he urged Massachusetts voters to support Attorney General Martha Coakley over Republican Scott Brown. He also railed against "the same fat-cats who are getting rewarded for their failure."

But in Illinois, Democrats have nominated a banker for Obama's old Senate seat

Susan Ferrechio -Democrats try to manage stream of scandals

Democrats have suffered from a string of scandals reminiscent of the corruption that plagued the GOP before the party lost the majority in Congress four years ago. While Democrats appear to have taken some important lessons from 2006, when they rode to victory on the "culture of corruption" attacks against Republicans, their response may not be enough to spare them the same fate as the GOP. "They need tougher ethics rules now, no ifs ands or buts," said Democratic strategist Doug Schoen.

AMEDORI: Launches Online Petition to Stop Reconciliation

AMEDORI: Launches Online Petition to Stop Reconciliation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3.8.10

http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/03/amedori-launches-online-petition-to.html
http://kbetrue.livejournal.com/304711.html

AMEDORI: Launches Online Petition to Stop Reconciliation

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, launched an online petition calling on United States Senator Barbara Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation for Obamacare. Please sign Carmen’s Petition by visiting http://www.amedoriforsenate.com/petition.php

“Reconciliation is not the method to pass health care reform.

“I am launching this online effort to send a message to our Senator that Marylanders don’t want Obamacare forced down our throats and that she should vote against reconciliation,” state Amedori. “A national mandate is not a way to make health care more affordable.”

People can join Carmen’s effort by visiting
www.amedoriforsenate.com or by friending Amedori For U.S. Senate on facebook.

Amedori believes that a health care reform package must include tort reform, associated health plans, rules that allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines, more emphasis on health savings accounts and a method for allowing people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance coverage.

Amedori is a former Maryland House Delegate where she served on the Judiciary Committee and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Minority Leader. She earned a distinguished reputation for being tough on crime, a strong advocate for property rights, and a champion for small business. In 2004, Governor Robert Ehrlich honored Amedori by appointing her to the Maryland Parole Commission where she served until last year.

Amedori is a graduate of Stevenson University. Before entering public life, she was a paralegal and journalist for the Baltimore Sun. She is the proud mother of two daughters.

Amedori believes that as the next United States Senator she can do a better job for the people of Maryland. She wants to Maryland First ahead of political partisanship. “It is time we had a Senator focused on results rather than political gamesmanship. As a former member of the House Delegates, I know how to make a difference. Barbara has had 24 years and now is the time for new leadership,” added Amedori.

Michael John Netherland Sr. obituary

Our Maryland Blogger Alliance colleague, Mike Netherland, passed away last week at 48. The Pillage Idiot (http://pillageidiot.blogspot.com/ - http://twitter.com/pillageidiot) - just told me the sad news last Saturday.

There is a post with the sad news up at: http://marctrainblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/mike-he-will-be-missed.html.] and Jeff Quinton has a post here: http://insidecharmcity.com/2010/03/04/r-i-p-mike-netherland/

Here is Mr. Netherland’s obituary:
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/hometownannapolis/obituary.aspx?n=michael-john-netherland&pid=140346215

from: http://www.hometownannapolis.com/

NETHERLAND, MICHAEL JOHN, SR., of Severna Park, died on March 3, 2010. Born in Beaver, PA on May 5, 1961 and raised throughout the United States and abroad in a military family, Michael graduated from Vicenza American High School in Italy in 1979.

He attended Penn State University, where, as a staff member of The Collegian, he developed his love for writing. He was selected for an internship at the National Review Journalism Center which resulted in a position as a reporter for The Washington Times.

Michael later worked for various government contractors, including Panacea Consulting Inc., before being hired by the US Department of Labor.

A man of letters, Michael enjoyed writing so much that he even did it in his spare time. He never hesitated to forward an opinion on policy issues and was a frequent contributor to many newspapers.

An active member of the GOP, Michael developed websites for several Anne Arundel County Senators and Delegates to the Maryland General Assembly. He founded the website for the Anne Arundel County Elephant Club.

From his blog, "Mike's Nether Land" (
http://mikenetherland.blogspot.com), Michael summed up his life more perfectly than could anyone else: "Approaching middle age with not-so-quiet desperation, I find solace in my writing. I love trying to get people to think for themselves, thus I have a small but hardy band of friends who seem to tolerate me. My son and my dad are my best friends for we are most alike. And if ever God has bestowed gifts upon man, surely they have been the women in my life."

Michael is survived by his wife, Dianne and their children, Michael and Sara; parents Lt. Col. (Ret.) William H. and Elizabeth A. Netherland of Severna Park; sister, Peggy Johnson, her husband Bob and their children Katie and Eric of W. Friendship, MD; brother, Bill, his wife Melissa and their daughter Isabel of Charleston, SC; father-in-law and mother-in-law Dwight and Barbara Mills of Sharon, PA; brothers-in-law Jeff and Michael Mills; sister-in-law Linda Mosley, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive visitors at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD (
www.barrancofuneralhome.com) on Sunday, March 7th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Rd, Severna Park, MD on Monday morning, March 8th at 10.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be sent to a scholarship fund for the children at: The Michael Netherland, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, PNC Bank, 596 Ritchie Hwy., Severna Park, MD 21146.

Maxine's View On Health Care Reform

Maxine's View On Health Care Reform:

Let me get this straight......we're trying to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a president that also is exempt from it and hasn't read it and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke.

What the hell could possibly go wrong?
