Colombian soldiers free long-held rebel hostages | The Daily Caller - Breaking News, Opinion, Research, and Entertainment

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Soldiers on Sunday freed two high-ranking police officers who were among Colombia’s longest-held rebel captives in a raid in southern jungles, President Alvaro Uribe announced.

Both Gen. Luis Mendieta and Col. Enrique Murillo were captured by the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, in the November 1998 siege of the remote eastern provincial capital of Mitu.

Uribe did not provide details of the rescue other than to say, “The combat is continuing.” Sunday was Mendieta’s 53rd birthday.

Did capitalism or government fail us? | The Daily Caller - Breaking News, Opinion, Research, and Entertainment

The inevitable pictures of pelicans covered in oil finally surfaced, solidifying this oil spill as the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. We have not seen this many pictures of unintelligent animals covered in oil since the first season of “Jersey Shore.”

Now we ask the bigger question: Which failed us more, capitalism or government?

The Daily Beast: Pentagon Manhunt by Philip Shenon

Pentagon Manhunt by Philip Shenon

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-06-10/wikileaks-founder-julian-assange-hunted-by-pentagon-over-massive-leak/full/

Anxious that Wikileaks may be on the verge of publishing a batch of secret State Department cables, investigators are desperately searching for founder Julian Assange. Philip Shenon reports. Plus, Daniel Ellsberg tells The Daily Beast: "Assange is in Some Danger."

(This story has been updated to reflect new developments on Assange's whereabouts, including the cancelation of a scheduled appearance in Las Vegas.)

Pentagon investigators are trying to determine the whereabouts of the Australian-born founder of the secretive website Wikileaks for fear that he may be about to publish a huge cache of classified State Department cables that, if made public, could do serious damage to national security, government officials tell The Daily Beast.

The officials acknowledge that even if they found the website founder, Julian Assange, it is not clear what they could do to block publication of the cables on Wikileaks, which is nominally based on a server in Sweden and bills itself as a champion of whistleblowers.

Western Civilizations’ throw-away society had its beginnings in the Italian Renaissance when Humanist writers espoused facts that Mother Nature would constantly replenish her resources. The early 20th century Italian Futurist painter, Marinetti, wrote a manifest to the movement that applauded industrial pollution as proof that mankind was moving forward in a positive direction. Enter the 21st century and industrialized nations are looking back, not to the Italian Renaissance or industry but to those countries, while appearing primitive, have been practicing sustainable living. Rejected to Perfected will feature art and media are not purchased at the art store, whose pigment will not pollute water sources but bring awareness to the beauty and functionality that can be found in the landfill, recycle bins and dumpsters. These creative artists think out of the box. “Renew-Reuse-Recycle” is their artistic credo. In addition, there will be a few other twists such as displaying the incredible bottle cap sculpture of “Starry Night” on loan from Finksburg Public Library, and we will be selling copies of “Do Martians Recycle” by Sharon Gribbon-Lindemon.

The Times can't get enough of these tiny protests in support of amnesty for illegal immigrants, while giving cursory coverage to far larger conservative protests like the Tea Party rally on Capitol Hill last September.

Times Jumps on Fiorina's 'Classic Campaign Gaffe' That 'Could Haunt Her Throughout the Campaign'

The Times' Jennifer Steinhauer jumped on Carly Fiorina for a gaffe she made to an open microphone the day after winning California's Republican primary for the U.S. Senate race against Sen. Barbara Boxer: “An Early Campaign Gaffe Makes a Non-Issue Big.”

The Times played a double game, admitting the pittance of the issue while simultaneously using it as a club against Fiorina's November prospects.

You can parse a voting record. Flip-flops -- political ones -- are fair game. But don’t talk about a woman’s hair.

In one of those classic campaign gaffes, Carly Fiorina, the Republican nominee for the Senate seat held by Barbara Boxer, the California Democrat, was caught mocking Ms. Boxer’s hair into an open microphone on Wednesday. She also had a few tough words about the newly minted Republican candidate for governor and her B.F.F.-on-the-stump, Meg Whitman.

Ms. Fiorina’s comments were, all told, really no more incendiary than a bit of warm pasta salad -- who hasn’t indulged in some off-the-record chitchat about the grooming habits of others now and then? But they presented her with a political problem that could haunt her throughout the campaign.

Only if the Times makes a big deal out of it -- like Steinhauer did in her Friday story, using the incident as a metaphor for campaign criticisms of Fiorina:

They both inform and confirm the image from her days as chief executive at Hewlett-Packard that she is tart and unpleasant. And they open the entire campaign to perceptions, however tired or unfair, that women can be dragged down the road of pettiness, perceptions that detract from the serious and pressing issues of the day.

Steinhauer, who, as Times Watch documented yesterday, labeled Republican Senate primary winner Sharron Angle of Nevada a “far-right conservative,” pumped the story into a scandal for Fiorina, even referencing a supposedly “vicious” ad by Fiorina:

....after commentary on the passion for hamburgers shared by her husband and male staff members, Ms. Fiorina somehow pivoted to the locks of her Democratic opponent.
“Laura saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television this morning and said what everyone says, ‘God, what is that hair?’ Soooooooo yesterday,” Ms. Fiorina said, scrolling, scrolling.

Even in the age of uncivil talk-show discourse and vicious campaign advertisements -- Ms. Fiorina’s campaign constructed one that depicted her primary opponent as a possessed sheep -- physical appearance, especially hair, is a place most candidates and their staff are careful not to go.

The Times Devotes Another Full Story to Latest Micro-Protest Against Illegal Immigration Crackdown

Want to get your protest covered in the Times? As long as you're pushing a politically correct cause, you don't need many actual protesters.

Reporter Abby Goodnough hyped a tiny protest of illegal immigrant students in Friday's “Surprising Immigration Crackdown Advances.” The "surprise" is that the true blue state of Massachusetts is pondering a crackdown on illegal immigration in the wake of Arizona's new law.

The Times can't get enough of these tiny protests in support of amnesty for illegal immigrants. The paper has previously devoted two full stories to a couple of protests involving four and five students. The paper provided a similar amount of coverage to far, far larger conservative protests like the Tea Party rally on Capitol Hill last September, which drew well over 100,000.

Lawmakers were tangled in budget talks inside the Massachusetts Statehouse this week, but a 19-year-old college student spent even more time at the gold-domed building on Beacon Hill.

Andres Del Castillo, who just finished his freshman year at Suffolk University in Boston, is holding a vigil on the Statehouse steps to protest what could be the state’s harshest crackdown on illegal immigrants in decades. The plan, already approved by the Senate, must survive budget negotiations with the House to become law.

Over a photo showing perhaps a dozen students huddled outside the Massachusetts Statehouse in Boston (which is apparently a huge turnout as these things go), Goodnough suggested conservative talk show hosts were fostering some of the sentiment:

And while Arizona’s tough new immigration policy seemed largely irrelevant here when it passed in April -- both legislative chambers are controlled by Democrats who typically pay scant attention to the issue, and Bill O’Reilly of Fox News has derided Massachusetts as a “sanctuary state” for illegal immigrants -- ripple effects hit almost immediately.

Goodnough acknowledged the popularity of immigration crackdowns even in liberal Massachusetts.

By the time the Senate moved to tighten restrictions on illegal immigrants last month, a Suffolk University/7 News poll had bolstered the position of Republican lawmakers like Representative Jeffrey Perry, who is running for Congress on a platform of curbing illegal immigration. The poll of 500 registered Massachusetts voters found that more than half supported the Arizona law.

Goodnough heralded the "small group" of brave students that somehow managed to earn a full story in the nation's most influential newspaper:

“We never expected to have to be on the lookout for something like this in Massachusetts,” said Mr. Del Castillo, who has barely left the Statehouse since Sunday and said he would stay until the Senate withdrew its legislation. “It’s creating anti-immigrant sentiment within our communities, our schools and our work environments.”

Mr. Del Castillo and a small group of others conducting the vigil are especially concerned with a provision that would codify into law an existing policy that bars illegal immigrants from qualifying for resident tuition rates at state colleges. Most of them are students themselves, and their group, the Student Immigrant Movement, has also rallied for federal legislation that would allow illegal immigrants who arrived here before they turned 15 to apply for legal residency.

....

Jose Palma, 22, said he felt obliged to camp out at the Statehouse and buttonhole passers-by about the crackdown to dispel a perception that it would only strengthen existing rules.

“It’s not just reinforcing what already exists,” said Mr. Palma, who left El Salvador in 1998 and has temporary protected status. “That’s why some of us are sacrificing to be here 24/7 -- because we want everybody to understand what it is.”

No Aid Found on Turkish Vessel Mavi Marmara

The only ship that was violent was not carrying any aid. Of the seven ships which announced their intentions to break Israel’s legal maritime blockade of Hamas-controlled Gaza, six were redirected without incident. The one vessel, Turkish-operated Mavi Marmara, was the only ship in the flotilla which ambushed Israeli soldiers. Over the past 10 days, it has been obvious that the dozens of “peace activists” came ready and eager for a violent skirmish and were thus anything but peace loving individuals...

What the Helen Happened?
Kevin E. Dayhoff

Count me among the many who were profoundly offended at the remarks uttered by the curiously curmudgeon – White House correspondent Helen Thomas – to Rabbi David Nesenoff and his 17-year-old son, on May 27.

Surprising China – Part 2

Chengdu, China – I have always been an antique seeker, and to my delight, my wife also enjoys the challenge of finding treasures. We are always aware that fakes are often sold both here and in America and follow the age old adage of “buyer beware,” one of the many sayings of Confucius.

A Cuban History Lesson
Nick Diaz

As the 50th anniversary of my arrival on these American shores approaches, I feel compelled to relate some of the stories of my half-century as an exile of Fidel Castro’s Cuba. Many of these personal, family, and political experiences have been surfacing in my mind recently, as I’m going deeper into a nostalgic mood.

Three Nooses
Richard B. Weldon Jr.

President Barack Obama may not have been my choice, but I also don’t think he’s unfit, unqualified, or unworthy of the office of President of the United States. The “Birthers,” conspiracy nuts, and ultra conservatives, who suggest otherwise, sound a little goofy.

I've been watching with interest, slight amusement and a tad bit of annoyance the letters, editorials and blogs discussing the city’s annexations of the Crum and Thatcher farms. The same claims rehashed nothing new, just more emotional rhetoric at this point.

The politics of losing

A political campaign, even at a local level, is an intense combination of hard work, countless hours and sometimes sleepless nights replaying the last candidate forum or question from the media. So, why would anyone willingly enter their name into the craziness that is campaigning?

Rethinking Online Anonymity
Kevin E. Dayhoff

In the brave new world of Internet publishing, most news and commentary websites that finally embraced the idea of allowing readers to post comments are now starting to rethink and debate whether or not the great Democracy-experiment in free speech has worked, or if it is worth the effort in light of the Pandora’s Box it opened.

Surprising China

Chengdu, China – Many of our overseas Chinese friends had warned us. The people in China were rude, crude and totally unlikable, they said. They will cheat and rob. Crime is high. Bargaining is a nightmare and they are a dirty people. They were wrong.

Campaign Diary – This and That
Michael Kurtianyk

Is it just me, or do you also wonder how a Mexican can argue logically that America’s borders should be open while you’d be jailed for up to 10 years if you entered Mexico illegally?

Noting Memorial Day
Norman M. Covert

Historically the only credit many fighting men received in the early chronicles of America’s military defense of liberty was being “noted in dispatches from the front.” With that in mind, I was reminded last week that the cast of characters changes ever so slightly from one ceremonial rite to the next in Frederick.
