WAS SCENE OF BRUTAL BEATING DEATH
OF BAR PATRON TWO MONTHS AGO

By Stephen Janis

The Baltimore City Liquor Board suspended the license of a troubled Brooklyn bar today, urging the current owners to sell the license quickly and find new owners.

Ravens House bar on the 3700 block of South Hanover Street will turn in its liquor license tomorrow, said Liquor Board Chairman Stephan Fogleman.

The bar was the site of the brutal beating death of a patron two months ago, in May, who was hit in the head with a pool stick, then dragged outside and beaten to death by several other patrons, one of whom was the boyfriend of a Ravens House bartender.

FEDS UNDER STRAIN FROM RESPONDING
TO LOCAL DEPORTATION REFERRALS

By Stephen Janis

The dollar value of the illegal alien smuggling operations thwarted by the federal government has dropped along the country’s Southwest Arizona border since 2005, an investigation by the Government Accountability Office found.

But the reason for the drop does not bode well for the newly enacted law in Arizona which requires local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws.

That's because investigators found that Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) resources were strained by handling local law enforcement requests to process illegal immigrants for deportation, a strain that ICE investigators said was thwarting their efforts to combat dangerous human smuggling operations.

WALE’S FOLLÉ — Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts considers legal action against popular hip-hop rapper for profane performance

Hip-hop singer/rapper Wale, shown here performing in Atlanta, used foul language in his act at Artscape last Sunday in Baltimore, including the f-word and n-word.

CITY AGENCY MAKES CLEAR WHEN BOOKING ACTS THAT ARTSCAPE IS A 'FAMILY-ORIENTED' EVENT

Foul language “inappropriate,” spokesperson says

WE ONLY F**K WITH REAL NI**AS!
Much-repeated chorus at Artscape

By Alan Z. Forman

In the wake of a profane performance by popular rapper/hip-hop artist Wale Sunday night on the main stage at Artscape — first brought to public attention by Investigative Voice Editor-in-Chief Regina Holmes’ “Reggie’s Rant” column published in this space Monday — the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts (BOPA) is looking into possible legal action against the Washington, D.C.-based performer.

In a radio interview with WBAL Wednesday, BOPA’s Director of Communications Tracy Baskerville told the station’s Anne Kramer that while the agency works with a booking agent, “We’re going back through our contracts to make sure there was no miscommunication about what was going on.”

Baskerville said performers “are told right off the bat that [Artscape] is a family-oriented show and that it is open to the public in a public space,” adding that “we spoke with the band as a reminder before they went on stage, that they knew this, so we did know that that took place.”

WHAT’S THE POINT OF HAVING TICKETS
IF THEY WON'T LET YOU IN THE DOOR?

By Regina Holmes

I wanted to write a rant on Monday about Artscape but I was still recovering from it. All the walking, the heat; the crowds, the heat; the sore feet, the heat; the overeating, the heat. Not that I'm complaining. I had a great time at Artscape. One of the biggest perks I've found about living in Mount Vernon is having the nation's largest free arts festival unfold around me. I went to multiple events on all three days, popping back home two or three times a day to make a pit stop, refuel and, in some cases, shower and change.

I was very excited about this year's Artscape and I have to say that overall I really enjoyed it. I'm awed by the sheer magnitude of the event; it's obvious an enormous amount of planning has to be done to pull off an affair of this size and scope. I was impressed by the variety of entertainment, food, and artwork, although there could have been a bit more diversity in the entertainment acts. (There were few if any Latino-flavored musical acts, for example, and no such dance performances.) A friend and I noted with humor that a Middle Eastern dance troupe performing at Penn Station was comprised (from what we saw) of all white women. I heard several great jazz bands, including the Craig Alston Quartet, which won the Chick Webb Jazz Combo Competition. I found the crowds to be in good spirits and upbeat; everyone seemed to be having a good time.

My experience was marred somewhat, however, by an incident on Sunday evening on the Wachovia stage, the main one, at Cathedral Street and Mount Royal Avenue.

I was not at the stage at the time; I had just returned home two blocks away around 7 p.m. to grab a quick bite before going to hear Wale at that stage. I wasn't familiar with the D.C.-based hip-hop artist (born of Nigerian-immigrant parents, whose real name is Olubowale Victor Folarin) but several friends had told me about him, so I thought I would check him out. I could hear the music and rapping very clearly from my balcony, which offers a bird's-eye view of the stage.

Suddenly I heard a rapper shouting the chorus: “We only f—k with real n—s!”

LANGUAGE SHOCKS, DISTURBS

Over and over again, he repeated the f-word and the n-word ad infinitum. I was shocked. Now, many rappers do use such language and if a fan chooses to buy a concert ticket or watch a video, that's his or her choice. But in a public venue at a city-sponsored, family-oriented event attended by many young children, blasting such offensive language on a sound system that could be heard blocks away was not only ill-advised but should not be tolerated... http://www.investigativevoice.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4987:reggies-rant-artscape&catid=25:the-project&Itemid=44

Rapper Wale Used Profanity At Artscape

Performer Used Profanity At Artscape

Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Anne Kramer

The City Office of Promotion and the Arts looking over its contract with a hip hop artist who used profanity on stage Sunday at the final performance of Artscape.

Wale used the "f" word and the "n" word during his song on the main stage.

Artscape officials say they heard it immediately but they didn't want to make the situation worse by stopping him.

Tracy Baskerville with the Office of Promotion and the Arts tells WBAL Radio that they are deeply disturbed by his words and apologetic to those who found them offensive.

Investigative Voice first reported the artist used those words during his performance.

About Today: 5 Ways to Cool off Your Laptop

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I'm pretty sure my laptop is trying to kill me. It is, as my mother used to say, hotter than the hinges outside right now, and yet my portable computer beast insists on trying to melt my skirt to my legs. I think we can all agree that this is unnecessary.

Is Your Laptop Too Hot?
How hot is too hot, though? Exactly when does your toasty laptop go from being the world's most annoying digital heating pad, and become an actual problem?

Why Do Laptops Overheat?
I can never figure out why my laptop gets so hot in the first place. It's not as if there's a tiny printing press in there, minting websites by the dozen.

5 Ways to Make a Hot Laptop Cooler
Before I read this piece, I assumed my only option was to put my laptop on pillow. It turns out, there's plenty you can do to cool it down.

8 Tips for Using Laptops in Hot Weather
The weather outside makes the weather under my laptop seem all the more unbearable. Fortunately, it turns out I don't need those ice-pack pants after all.

New Direction for any war: Send Service Vets over 60!

New Direction for any war: Send Service Vets over 60!

I am over 60 and the Armed Forces think I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 42 to join the military. They've got the whole thing ass-backwards. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 35.

For starters: Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.

Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. 'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry' We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while.

An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10 a..m. Old guys always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, 'I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.

If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.

Boot camp would be easier for old guys.. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training.

Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head...

These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way..

Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple of million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them..

***How about recruiting Women over 50 ...in menopause!!! You think Men have attitudes!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!!
If nothing else, put them on border patrol.... They will have it secured the first night!

Send this to all of your senior friends...it's in big type so they can read it
