Reader Supported News By Scott Galindez: Dangerous Outlaw Willie Nelson Detained by Border Patrol

Dangerous Outlaw Willie Nelson
Detained by Border Patrol

By Scott Galindez, Reader Supported News
27 November 10

n a major coup for the border patrol's war on drug smuggling on the Mexican border, authorities seized 6 ounces of marijuana and detained notorious pot-smoking outlaw Willie Nelson. Nelson was detained after a border patrol officer heroically boarded his tour bus after detecting a pungent scent in the air
US Border Patrol spokesman Bill Brooks said Nelson's tour bus was stopped at a checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, at about 9 a.m. on Friday. He said an officer smelled pot when a door was opened and a search turned up 6 ounces of marijuana.
Brooks said Nelson was among three people arrested.
Nelson and his crew were reportedly on their way to Austin following a gig in California. The arrest did not take place on the border, but at a checkpoint well inside the United States.
When news of the arrest leaked to Twitter, tweeters were shocked and Nelson shot up to the top of the trending list.
Comedian John Fugelsang pointed out that while Willie Nelson was arrested in Texas for 6 ounces of cannabis, God, who produces it naturally across globe, is still at large.
A popular retweet: "They arrested Willie Nelson for weed?!? That's like arresting Santa for breaking and entering."
Rock guitarist Slash tweeted: "All things considered, Willie Nelson should have a federal issue, no limit marijuana license. End of story."
However, others tweeted that they would be able to sleep better knowing that Nelson is off the streets.
It didn't take long for Sage Francis to start a new "hash" tag: #FreeWilly.
According to multiple media sources Nelson was released after posting bail in the amount of $2,500.
While I mixed in a little satire, the sad thing is that this is a true story. How many of you would have even looked for the pot? I think I would have told Willie to make sure the driver didn't get stoned, and to have a nice day. After I got his autograph of course.http://www.readersupportednews.org/opinion2/304-justice/4065-dangerous-outlaw-willie-nelson-detained-by-border-patrol

PBS Edits Tina Fey's Acceptance Speech

Liz Lemon Goes to Washington
On November 9, PBS taped the made-for-TV Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony, which awarded Tina Fey this year.  This year marks her as the third woman to receive the prize and the honor's youngest recipient.  A who's who of American comedy studded the broadcast with tributes, such as Amy Poehler calling the ceremony Fey's "comedy bar mitzvah," and Betty White stating, "I'm the only one here who actually dated Mark Twain. And I can tell you they didn't call him Samuel Longhorne Clemens for nothing."

[...]

Fey even credited Sarah Palin, her favorite SNL target, for helping her win the prize:
"I would be a liar and an idiot if I didn't thank Sarah Palin for helping get me here tonight.  My partial resemblance and her crazy voice are the two luckiest things that have ever happened to me.  All kidding aside, I'm so proud to represent American humor, I am proud to be an American, and I am proud to make my home in the 'not real' America. And I am most proud that during trying times, like an orange [terror] alert, a bad economy or a contentious election, that we as a nation retain our sense of humor."
The event was aired on TV a week later, but "due to time constraints," PBS edited out part of Fey's acceptance speech that went on to address Palin's influence on women in America:
"And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women...  http://www.care2.com/causes/politics/blog/pbs-edits-tina-feys-humor-prize-acceptance-speech/

Reader Supported News: US Shuts Down Web Sites in Piracy Crackdown

US Shuts Down Web Sites in Piracy Crackdown

By Ben Sisario, The New York Times

This is a slippery slope, what will the government assume the authority to shut down next? - SMG/RSN

In what appears to be the latest phase of a far-reaching federal crackdown on online piracy of music and movies, the Web addresses of a number of sites that facilitate illegal file-sharing were seized this week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of the Department of Homeland Security.
By Friday morning, visiting the addresses of a handful of sites that either hosted unauthorized copies of films and music or allowed users to search for them elsewhere on the Internet produced a notice that said, in part: "This domain name has been seized by ICE - Homeland Security Investigations, pursuant to a seizure warrant issued by a United States District Court."  http://www.readersupportednews.org/off-site-news-section/68-68/4066-us-shuts-down-web-sites-in-piracy-crackdown

The TSA can't control how you talk

The TSA can't control how you talk

Perhaps you have reflected while passing through airports, as I have many times over the past several years: Here are federal employees with wages and benefits whose job is to move a plastic dishpan from one end of a table to the other.
It is all part of the rich absurdity of contemporary air travel. First, you are fleeced by the airlines, which cannot apparently make a go of their business without nickel-and-diming the customers. Pay for a seat that has about as much space as you would have had in the hold of a ship on the Middle Passage, unless you pay more for some room. Pay for your bag. Pay more for an extra bag. Ryanair considered installing pay toilets on its planes, an idea whose time is surely coming... http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/mcintyre/blog/2010/11/the_tsa_cant_control_how_you_talk.html

Belle Grove Square Holiday House tour in Westminster slated for Dec. 11, 2010 3-8 p.m.

DAYHOFF: Touring history, and holiday finery, at Belle Grove Square

Eagle Archive By Kevin Dayhoff

At the last meeting of the Westminster mayor and Common Council, two venerable and historic Westminster neighborhoods were placed under zoning protections in an effort to preserve and protect them for future generations. (See page 5. http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/4960/westminster-officials-adopt-zoning-changes-willis-street-belle-grove/)

The two neighborhoods involved in the adopted zoning changes, Belle Grove Square and Willis Street, are steeped in history and tradition in Westminster.

The origins of Belle Grove Square date back to 1866…

Fast-forwarding, folks will have the opportunity to tour the historic Belle Grove Square neighborhood Dec. 11, 3-8 p.m., when the community opens its doors for the Westminster Historic District Commission's biannual Historic Holiday House Tour.

The last time the community had the opportunity to celebrate its historic homes was on the occasion of the first holiday house tour in 1996. Bruce DeVault, the president of the neighborhood association, is excited about the tour. He said it'll be a unique opportunity to see inside some of Westminster's hidden treasures.

The tour "is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the history of our town," said Melissa Hynes, Westminster's comprehensive planner.

Tickets -- $10 in advance; $12 at the door -- are on sale at the city administrative offices, City Hall, the Historical Society, Carroll Arts Center and the Hickory Stick.

I was in Phoenix, Ariz., last week for a reporters' conference, Capitolbeat, and the ironies were in abundance...

It was on the date of my visit, Nov. 12, 1954, that Ellis Island, the gateway to the United States and the symbol of American the immigrant experience, closed after more than 12 million immigrants passed through its gates since opening in 1892...

It should be noted that Congress hasn't formally acted on the issue since the last immigration reform measures were passed in 1986 -- a point not lost on New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson when he addressed the Capitolbeat conference....
