Maryland State Trooper Killed In Crash Is Identified

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 21, 2011

MARYLAND STATE TROOPER KILLED IN CRASH IS IDENTIFIED
(LAUREL, MD) – Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Terrence B. Sheridan has identified the state trooper killed in the line of duty early this morning in traffic crash on Interstate 95 in Howard County.

The trooper is identified as Trooper First Class Shaft S. Hunter, 39, an 11-year veteran of the Maryland State Police.  TFC Hunter was assigned to road patrol duties at the Waterloo Barrack.  He was on-duty, working night patrol shift on I-95, when the crash occurred.

“TFC Hunter was an outstanding trooper who was known for his dedication to duty,” Colonel Sheridan said.  “He died while working to keep our highways safe.  He will be greatly missed by his family and his fellow troopers at the Waterloo Barrack and throughout the Maryland State Police.  He is the 43rd state trooper to make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the people of Maryland.  His death comes at the end of National Police Week, when we honor the more than 19,000 police officers nationwide who have given their lives in the line of duty.  TFC Hunter has now joined the ranks of these American heroes.”

The crash occurred about 2:40 a.m. today on southbound I-95 at the Laurel rest area, south of Rt. 32.  TFC Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.  The preliminary investigation indicates TFC Hunter was southbound on I-95 when he struck tractor trailer that was parked on the shoulder of the interstate, just before the entrance ramp to the rest area.  He was wearing his seat belt when the crash occurred.

witness told investigators he was passed by motorcycle that was traveling at high rate of speed just before being passed by marked State Police car.  Moments later, the witness said the patrol car struck the rear of the tractor trailer.

Based on witness information, TFC Hunter was possibly in pursuit of this speeding motorcycle.  He had not radioed in to the barrack about this before the crash occurred, but that is not unusual when trooper is in the initial moments of an attempted traffic stop.
The patrol car struck the rear of the tractor trailer and then traveled down the side of the trailer, coming to rest near the front of the trailer.  The tractor trailer driver was not injured in the crash.

The tractor trailer driver is identified as Albert Sandino, 46, of Covina, California.  He was driving 2009 International truck tractor pulling box trailer loaded with household bleach.  The truck was headed from Aberdeen, Maryland to Virginia.  The driver told investigators he had pulled to the side of the interstate briefly to check for directions to his destination.

The crash scene required the closure of southbound I-95 until about 8:30 a.m.  today.  State Highway Administration personnel responded and set up detours around the area.

TFC Hunter was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  He held Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from St. Augustine College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

After college, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served from 1994 to 2000.  He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps with the rank of captain.

The Maryland State Police recruited TFC Hunter out of the Marine Corps.  He entered the State Police Academy on January 3rd, 2000.  He was elected president of the 114th Trooper Candidate Class.  He gave an address at his academy class graduation in June of 2000.

TFC Hunter’s first assignment was at the Waterloo Barrack.  He later worked at the Glen Burnie and Westminster barracks, before returning to the Waterloo Barrack in October of 2010.

TFC Hunter leaves behind six children, ages 4-19.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

TSA Watch: America’s funniest federal agency? No, seriously

TSA Watch: America’s funniest federal agency? No, seriously

If the TSA wasn’t violating our civil rights with its intrusive screening procedures, as so many passengers claim, and as Texas Rep. David Simpson explains in his thoughtful commentary, then all of this might be kind of funny.

[...]

Playing along with the joke, Janet Napolitano insisted the shoesmust continue to come off during screening in a speech this week to a tourism conference. Her remarks drew applause.

[...]

And then there’s exhibit #2 — our friend Blogger Bob. If you don’t think the TSA’s social-media mouthpiece has a sense of humor, then you haven’t read his April Fool’s Day post about invisible space aliens being screened.

[...]

How about last week’s bomb “drill” in Minneapolis that TSA forgot to tell local law enforcement about? Oops. That had a few observers chuckling, didn’t it?

The Andrew Jackson USPS Postage Stamp produced by the National Bank Note Co issued in 1863

It will, not surprisingly, renominate Andrew Jackson, but it dumps Vice President John C. Calhoun in favor of Martin Van Buren.

If there's one place where what goes around comes around, it's the United States Senate. Goodwin Liu, the Berkeley law professor nominated by President Obama to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, is the latest to learn that lesson.
Liu's nomination was blocked by a Republican filibuster Thursday -- the first successful filibuster against a judicial nominee since Democrats stopped all 10 of George W. Bush's appeals court nominees from 2003 to 2005. Although no one back then could have predicted that today's fight would be about Liu, everyone knew it was going to happen sometime. Once Democrats crossed the line to filibuster those Bush nominees, you could bet Republicans would strike back. And now they have.

Masterworks Chorale collaborates with the Columbia Orchestra

Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County, an 80-member, all-volunteer choir is busily preparing the finishing touches on a very special Spring Concert.  For the first time since 2008 when Ode to Joy, the choral finale to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was performed, Masterworks is again collaborating with the Columbia Orchestra in presenting Franz Josef Haydn's oratorio, The Creation.
Under the baton of Masterworks Chorale's Artistic Director, Dr. Margaret Boudreaux and accompanied by organist,Ted Dix, Masterworks will also perform Dr. Boudreaux's own composition, Consolation, along with American composer, Frank Ticheli's Earth Song, two selections from Handel's Messiah, plus Thanks be to God from Mendelssohn's Elijah.
Isaac Watt's paraphrase of Psalm 19:2 provides the text for Consolation, and espresses awe and gratitude for each new day.  In Earth Song, Ticheli beautifully expresses our desire to experience the creation as we meet each day anew, in ways that honor the light of peace instead of the darkness of war.  The two excerpts from Messiah (the first and final choruses from Part I of that work) and the final chorus from Part I of Elijah set the stage for the featured work, The Creation...  http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/contributed/news/masterworks-chorale-collaborates-with-the-columbia-orchestra/article_a56dd1d0-7994-11e0-965a-0017a4aa4fba.html ...
The performance will be on Sunday, May 15, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in Baker Memorial Chapel ("Big" Baker), McDaniel College, Westminster.  A reception will immediately follow the concert.

Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance and are available at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main Street, Westminster; from any Chorale member; or online at www.masterworksofcc.org.  As always, children and all students w/ID are admitted FREE.

Ryan Edward Handzo, of Phoenix, graduates from Georgia Tech

    Celebrating Atlanta and Georgia Tech

    LABELS:

May 11, 2011 by Kevin Dayhoff

Ryan Edward Handzo, of Phoenix, graduated with the 2011 class of Georgia Institute of Technology at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, on Sunday May 8.

Handzo, a 2007 graduate of Dulaney High School in Timonium, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering, with high honors.

Georgia Tech’s main campus is located in downtown Atlanta.  It was founded in 1885, in the depths of the reconstruction era following the American Civil War.

The keynote address for the 2,300 graduates at the 239th commencement ceremonies was delivered by the fourth chief executive officer of Wal-Mart, and Georgia Institute of Technology graduate Michael Terry Duke, 61.

“Since joining Wal-Mart in 1995, Duke has led the logistics, distribution and administration divisions, as well as Wal-Mart U.S…” according to the Georgia Tech newsroom.

Duke challenged the spring 2011 graduating class of Georgia Tech to follow three key ingredients to leadership and use three guideposts as they embark upon their lives and careers.

Duke, who graduated from Georgia Tech in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, remarked that “you can be the most learned… and the best speaker…  But you cannot be effective as a leader unless you are trusted…”

He continued that the three key ingredients to leadership are caring, performance and trust and he emphasized the importance of living one’s life as best as you can every single day in an effort to make a difference and contribute to the greater good…

Mr. Duke reflected that the guideposts to making a difference in the world are integrity, live with purpose, and set high expectations of oneself – and then exceed them.

“Do what’s right every single day,” said Mr. Duke as he held forth that one of the most important classes he took at Georgia Tech was a course in business ethics.

“It’s not just about the money.  It’s about doing good,” remarked Mr. Duke.  “Never sell yourself short.  Set the bar higher, then higher…”

Handzo is the son of Tammy and Rob Handzo, and the grandson of Louise Wright Miller of Westminster.

The fourth chief executive officer of Walmart, and Georgia Institute of Technology graduate Michael Terry Duke has challenged the Spring 2011 graduating class of Georgia Tech to follow three key ingredients to leadership and use three guideposts as they embark on their lives and careers…  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4394

Last Sunday I had the privilege of witnessing 2,300 proud graduates of Georgia Tech receive their diplomas in the midst of approximately 10,000 of their closest family and fans at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta.

For me the four-hour ceremony was worth it and the sage and well-prepared remarks by Mr. Duke were almost secondary to the pride I felt as I peered over a sea of black caps searching for my nephew, who received his undergraduate degree.

The opportunity to attend Georgia Tech’s 239th commencement ceremonies was certainly collateralized by being able to tour the campus of the proud institute that was founded in 1885, in the depths of Reconstruction following the Civil War.

It also gave me an opportunity to visit Atlanta, arguably the proud capitol of The South, and to gain a greater insight into the storied traditions of Georgia Tech, one of our nation’s best science, math, and engineering institutions of higher learning.

As for Mr. Duke’s background and address, the Georgia Tech news room pointed-out: “Since joining Walmart in 1995, [Mr.] Duke has led the logistics, distribution and administration divisions as well as Walmart U.S…”
