Tubman Underground Railroad center on Shore gets funding


Harriet Tubman has long inspired a deep sense of pride among Marylanders, especially in the rural communities of the Eastern Shore, where the former slave was born and led dozens to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

While her story is taught to schoolchildren across the country and a small storefront museum here pays homage to Tubman, descendants and historians have been waiting to see her memorialized in a grander fashion. The state announced Tuesday that it had secured enough money for a state park and visitor center bearing Tubman's name, cheering advocates for the long-planned project. It is slated for completion in 2013 — the 100th anniversary of Tubman's death...

Katherine Rose Beaver, 75, of Westminster, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Katherine Rose Beaver, 75, of Westminster, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at home. Born August 9, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Michael J. Gorman and Katherine Reilly Gorman. She was the wife of Joseph H. Beaver Jr. who died May 8, 2009.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster. She was a member of the Republican Womens Club, Maple Crest homemakers, Good Thyme Gals Garden Club. She was on the board at the Union Mills Homestead, Board Member and Treasurer of Junction, a member of the Historical Society and St. Joseph’s College in Emmittsburg class of 1957.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in law Michelle Beaver-Guttu and Bruce of Annapolis, Beth Wolfe and Steven of Hanover, P.A, sons and daughters-in-law Michael J. and Shannon Beaver of Westminster, Sean and Michele Beaver of Sykesville, brother and sister-in-law Michael and Kathleen Gorman of West Hartford, Conn., also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Arianna, Olivia, Logan, Megan, Ailish, Liam, Reagan, and Keira, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St, Westminster with Monsignor Arthur Valenzano officiating. Interment will follow in Meadow Branch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main Street, Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll County Historical Society, 210 East Main St., Westminster, MD 21157 or St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
