Washington Post NEWS ALERT: European leaders agree to plan designed to stem debt crisis

European leaders agree to plan designed to stem debt crisis

European leaders moved early Thursday to stem the debt crisis gripping the continent by agreeing to a plan that imposes steep losses on investors holding troubled Greek bonds and boosts the firepower of the region’s bailout fund to as much as a trillion dollars.

After marathon negotiations that continued well past midnight, European leaders said that banks and other major investors in Greek bonds agreed to taking losses of up to 50 percent.

Haaretz: Shostakovich's muse By Noam Ben Zeev

Published 02.04.07

Shostakovich's muse

In March 1953, a sigh of collective relief swept over the streets of the Soviet Union: Joseph Stalin was dead. Among the millions of people who felt that their lives were returned to them was the man who had been considered the Russian national composer until he fell out of favor with the regime, eight years earlier, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

His Ninth Symphony, which he wrote to celebrate the USSR's victory in World War II, was radiant, full of life, almost "light," but it infuriated Stalin. The Party committees declared it to go against the will of the Soviet people, and denunciated the composer with the label that was a death sentence for any artist: "formalistic."

Shostakovich was boycotted. The eight years during which the commissions dried up and the performances of his work ceased, and in which he was dismissed from his position as professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory, brought him to the brink of poverty and to thoughts of suicide. It seems that he was not immune to the curse: Beethoven had been the last to write nine symphonies, and in the 130 years since his death, no major composer had succeeded in completing a 10th one.

In December of 1953, however, the curse was lifted. The conservatory's huge Bolshoi Auditorium, sparkling with thousands of lights and overflowing with colorful bouquets, was packed with an audience that had come to celebrate the composer's return to his hometown, with his new symphony, his 10th. The enormous, excited crowd applauded the Leningrad Philharmonic, under the baton of one of the period's great conductors, Evgeny Mravinsky. And Shostakovich, bursting with pride, took his seat of honor…

The NYT Can't Find Anyone to Say Anything Good About Argentina

That is sort of striking since its President Cristina Kirchner seems headed for re-election with a clear majority of the votes. Argentina has also enjoyed the strongest growth over the last decade of any country in Latin America. Nonetheless all 5 of the NYT's sources in an article discussing the election were critical of Kirchner...

Obama Has Made Assassinations Cool Again

Obama Has Made Assassinations Cool Again

COMMENTARY | It has been a long time since President Gerald Ford, under pressure of the Church committee, issued an executive order prohibiting assassinations of foreign leaders such asFidel Castro. In the 1970s, assassinating enemies of the United States was considered uncool.
Not anymore. Continuing a policy begun by the Bush administration in the wake of 9/11, President Barack Obama has set out to kill people with an enthusiasm that would astonish a Mafia don out to conclude the family business. Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Alwaki are just two of the miscreants who have assumed room temperature thanks to presidential order. To be sure, Moammar Gadhafiwas sent to meet Allah by his own people, but the U.S. helped, along with the French.
This is not to say that anyone whom Obama has had killed did not richly deserve what they got. However, one has to note that just as only Nixon could go to China, only Obama could make assassinations cool again.
Big Government opines that Obama has gotten a taste of solving problems by making them disappear.
