This week officials from Maryland cities and towns throughout the state converged on the Cambridge Hyatt Chesapeake Bay conference facilities for the three-day Maryland Municipal League’s fall legislative conference.

The Maryland Municipal League, (MML) was founded in 1936 by Annapolis Mayor Louis N. Phelps in an effort for Maryland municipalities to obtain funds available to local governments from the Work Progress Administration (WPA) under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.

The organization is run by local officials from the 157 cities and towns from across the state. It works as an advocate for those municipalities.

In recent years, much of the advocacy of the MML has centered on maintaining, and indeed, restoring municipal state-shared revenues that have been taken away by the Maryland General Assembly in order to balance the beleaguered state budget.

Last weekend’s rare October winter weather may not be the only “deep freeze” that descended on the state as national, state and local elected officials attempt to fathom the political consequences of the prolonged economic downtown, increased rules, regulations and unfunded federal and state mandates being placed on local governments...

Zion Church of Balto., which holds services in German and English, is located at 400 East Lexington Street. The church had no heat on Sunday.

Services at Zion Church of Baltimore are generally filled with a warm, welcoming air, one befitting the congenial German congregation adjacent to City Hall, on East Lexington Street between Holliday and Gay Streets.

Parishioners attending this past Sunday were certainly greeted warmly, but there was a noticeable chill in the air: The steam service which the church depends on to heat the 19th Century building was cut off, the casualty of a dispute between supplier Veolia Energy and JBL Real Estate, the owner of an adjacent property which houses Sonar nightclub. ............

When the Woman’s Club of Westminster recently unveiled its 2011 holiday ornament, I pondered that this creative fundraising idea is just one more example of the ways the club has supported our community over the years.

For the past eight years, the Woman’s Club’s annual Christmas ornament has featured an historic building in Westminster.

That’s fitting, because for the past 100 years, the club has been a formidable force in the community, advocating for issues such as — but not limited to — a cannon, typhoid fever, consumption, the minimum wage, cholera, women’s suffrage, the League of Nations, raising chickens, drug dealing in American prisons, a new high school, trees, parks and flies. And also fly swatters.
