MENDACITY IN MARYLAND -- Tennessee Williams' 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' is model for 'Baltimore lie'

PRODUCTION OF CLASSIC 1955 PLAY IN CITY'S STATION NORTH DISTRICT IS METAPHOR FOR SOCIAL CHANGE  http://voiceofbaltimore.org/archives/1183

By Alan Z. Forman
Baltimore was a divided segregated city when Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" debuted on Broadway and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955.

Blacks could not eat at public lunch counters in Charm City (and elsewhere in America) and didn't venture into upscale Guilford or even lowly Hampden. Residents of Polish descent confined themselves to Highlandtown and Canton; Jews were not allowed in Roland Park. Italians lived in Little Italy.

People of color didn't mix with whites except to work for them.  ............

[...]

So well in fact that audiences viewing Williams’ play at the Load of Fun Theater in the old North Avenue Market last weekend in the city’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District barely noticed, if at all, that the cast was racially mixed, that the parents of two white brothers were portrayed by black actors, that the patriarch of an upscale Southern family in the segregated 1950s was played by an African-American Baltimorean.

Percy W. Thomas, dean for external programs at Sojourner-Douglass College and artistic director of Heralds of Hope Theater, which produced the play — advertised as “a color-blind production of the Pulitzer Prize winning tale” — in concert with the Theatrical Mining Company, nearly stole the show as Big Daddy Pollitt, Williams’ doomed patriarch of a wealthy Mississippi Delta family who is dying of colon cancer but doesn’t know it because he’s been lied to by everyone around him.

Kicked in the ass, as it were, under the guise of being kind.

For 72 years, Historical Society of Carroll County has honored the legacy of who we are

For 72 years, Historical Society of Carroll County has honored the legacy of who we are

November 23, 2011

As we get together with friends and family to celebrate the history and traditions of our way of life during this holiday season, we might also take time to pause and take stock of three critical questions that strike to the heart of why we enjoy such a high quality of life in Carroll County.

Carroll County has changed a great deal over the last several decades.

With these changes comes an importance to remember what strikes to the essence of our county — where do we come from, why we are here, and where are we going?

In part, these answers have been preserved by the Historical Society of Carroll County… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-1127-20111121,0,6968389.story

Happy Thanksgiving! Tomorrow all of America will be celebrating the American version of the “Harvest Festival” by gathering their families together and watching football. Some may be aware that the annual holiday originated as a celebration to give thanks for the annual harvest.

Perhaps because of my family’s long agricultural history, Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday in Carroll County. Besides, I’m a fan of any holiday in which food is involved, especially turkey.

I stand in good company because the turkey is a uniquely American contribution to the global palette.

According to numerous sources, including Andrew F. Smith’s “The Turkey: An American Story,” “The Spanish encountered domesticated turkeys in Mexico by 1518, and within a few years they had been introduced into the West Indies and Spain. Shortly thereafter, turkeys were widely disseminated throughout Western Europe.”

The authorities have arrested a man who law enforcement officials believe was planning to build and detonate a bomb in New York with government workers, returning military personnel and elected officials as the target, two people briefed on the case said on Sunday.

Cyrus R. Vance Jr.,  the Manhattan district attorney, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly of the New York Police Department announced the charges against the man at a Sunday evening news conference at City Hall.

The man was arrested within the last 24 hours.

The defendant in the case, identified as Jose Pimentel, 27, had bought bomb-making materials and “began to build them,” said one person briefed on the case, who added that the Police Department had had the man under surveillance for about a year.

Tumblr users have come out in full force against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the microblogging service announced yesterday.

Earlier this week, Tumblr set up a page where its users could sign up and receive a phone call from the company with talking points about SOPA. From there, the company connected users with their U.S. representatives to voice concerns about the bill.

All told, Tumblr said yesterday, 87,834 calls were placed to representatives. The average call lasted 53 seconds, while the longest came in at 31 minutes, the company said. A total of 1,293 total hours were spent talking to representatives... http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-57327681-17/tumblr-users-fight-sopa-with-87834-calls-to-congress/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
