ANNA MARIA ISLAND -- TripAdvisor has named Anna Maria Island the No. 3 island in the United States, up a spot from last year's No. 4 ranking.

The rating is based on the second annual Traveler's Choice Island awards from the website that compiles ratings and recommendations from travelers.

The TripAdvisor ranking is incredibly important to tourism in Anna Maria, notes Elliott Falcione, executive director for the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"TripAdvisor is really our biggest critic when it comes to visitation," Falcione said. "For them to rank Anna Maria with its character and Old Florida environment, it shows once again it's one of the top places to visit in the United States."

According to a TripAdvisor.com site poll, 72 percent of U.S. respondents plan on visiting an island in 2014. Marco Island topped the list, with Chincoteague Island, Va., coming in second. Key West was the only other Florida island to make the list at No. 10.

Top 10 Islands in the U.S.: 1. Marco Island, Florida 2. Chincoteague Island, Virginia 3. Anna Maria Island, Florida 4. San Juan Island, Washington 5. Maui, Hawaii 6. Kauai, Hawaii 7. Island of Hawaii, Hawaii 8. Nantucket, Massachusetts 9. Hilton Head, South Carolina 10. Key West, Florida

Seinfeld’ gets a phone call:   ‘Hi. Would you be interested in switching over to TMI long-distance service?’ the telemarketer asks. ‘Oh, gee, I can’t talk right now,’ Jerry responds, ‘Why don’t you give me your home number and I’ll call you later?’ To which the telemarketer replies: ‘Well, I’m sorry, we’re not allowed to do that.’ …

Even though it’s a new year and tax deductions for 2013 are history, the phone calls for giving continue to arrive early and often.

It’s gotten to the point where it seems the only reason landline phones have not been completely replaced by smartphones is they are needed to deliver pain-in-the-neck marketing and fund- raising calls.

Baltimore Orioles spring training schedule at Ed Smith stadium in Sarasota Florida for Feb. and March 2014

Baltimore Orioles spring training schedule at Ed Smith stadium in Sarasota Florida for Feb. and March 2014

February 19, 2014

Ed Smith Stadium
2700 12th St, Sarasota, FL 34237

Today I had the opportunity to stop by Ed Smith stadium. Although I wrote an article or two from spring training for the Baltimore Orioles for a number of years, 2014 marks the second year that I have not covered any of the Florida Grapefruit League. I guess I miss it.

Today we stopped by the stadium to grab some lunch with some dear friends from Westminster, Sueann and Bobby Myers…

According to Baltimore Orioles MLB.com, http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/spring_training/ballpark.jsp?c_id=bal, “2014 marks the fifth consecutive Spring Training for the Orioles in Sarasota, and the fourth in the renovated Ed Smith Stadium. With its modern amenities mixed with historical Florida architecture, Ed Smith Stadium has truly become “Birdland South.’”

Mitchell K. Alexander, McDaniel College director of Event Services

February 19, 2014

I learned today from my friend on Facebook, Mahlia Joyce that my dear friend Mitch Alexander has passed away from a heart attack… I am so sad and my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mitch was a wonderful friend for many-many years. He was always good for a big hug, a huge smile and a kind word.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel wrote:

Rest in peace Mitch...

We regret to inform the McDaniel community that Mitchell K. Alexander, director of Event Services, passed away today, Feb. 19, following a heart attack. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Education from WMC in 1980 and worked in Student Affairs as a part-time Decker Center building manager during the evenings and weekends. While an undergraduate here, he was named to Who’s Who Among American College Students and the recipient of the Lynn F. Gruber Leadership Award

After teaching middle school science for a year at Saint Francis Academy in Baltimore, Mitchell returned to the College as assistant director of College Activities. In 1986, he completed his master’s degree in School Administration. He left for a promotion in 1988 and served as director of Student Activities at Post College in Waterbury, Connecticut. He returned 16 months later to WMC as student activities director.

In a 1993 edition of the student newspaper, Mitchell was described as having, “the whole campus in his hands.” His legacy is one of empowering student groups to organize and create successful events for the campus community. More recently, his campus knowledge was invaluable for his expertise and guidance for event staging and set-ups.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Artis Alexander, class of 1981, and their two children, Blake and Paige.

Information regarding funeral services will be shared when available.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel

Ten top reasons to vote Democrat

Ten top reasons to vote Democrat

LETTERMAN’S TOP 10 REASONS TO VOTE DEMOCRAT

#10. I vote Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I’ve decided to marry my German Shepherd.

#9. I vote Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon at 15% isn’t.

#8. I vote Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

#7. I vote Democrat because Freedom of Speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

#6. I vote Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves. I am also thankful that we have a 911 service that get police to your home in order to identify your body after a home invasion.

#5. I vote Democrat because I'm not concerned about millions of babies being aborted so long as we keep all death row inmates alive and comfy.

#4. I vote Democrat because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education, and Social Security benefits, and we should take away Social Security from those who paid into it.

#3. I vote Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the Democrat Party sees fit.

#2. I vote Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.

…And the #1 reason I vote Democrat is because I think it's better to pay $billions$ for oil to people who hate us, but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle, gopher or fish here in America. We don't care about the beetles, gophers or fish in those other countries.

Panama Canal opened markets for Carroll farmers

The Panama Canal officially opened on Aug. 14, 1914, when the SS Ancon sailed the newly constructed 48-mile waterway from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. That path linking the two bodies of water on the Isthmus of Panama is mentioned a number of times in Carroll County history.

Distinguished international journalist Sadie Kneller Miller, who was born in Westminster, worked for many years for Leslie's Illustrated Weekly. She covered the early years of the building of the canal around 1908, according to research by Mary Ann Ashcraft for the Historical Society of Carroll County.

The opening of the canal gave a much-needed boost to Carroll County agriculture, as it shaved more than 7,000 miles off the trip by ship around South America to markets on the west coast of the United States and Asia for Carroll County corn, wheat, soybeans, canned goods and meat products.

The year the canal opened was a critical one in the history of Carroll County farming. It marked the end of an era that began in 1896 that agricultural historian Carol Lee referred to as the "Golden Age." … http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archives-0216-20140217,0,3710992.story
