News from The Hill: The rise of the new veterans
The rise of the new veterans By Jonathan Easley
A new class of post-9/11 military veterans has begun making a name for itself on Capitol Hill.
The number of military veterans in the House and Senate has been on a steady decline for nearly three decades. In the current Congress, only about 20 percent of the members in each chamber as having military experience.

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.:) GOP won the Senate because of racist Southerners
Democratic Congressman: GOP won the Senate because of
racist Southerners Posted on November
5, 2014 by Sam
Rolley
According to Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), the GOP’s
senatorial gains in the 2014 midterms have nothing to do with voter frustration
at President Barack Obama or failed policies from his party. Republicans won,
Rangel contends, because Americans are racist.
Last week, Rangel claimed that Southern Republicans still
believe in slavery and think the Confederates won the Civil War. That, he said,
is why voters in the South would reject progressive Democratic candidates.
According to the lawmaker, voter ID laws and other GOP
causes relate directly to lingering Southern racism.
Rangel had said during a Democratic campaign rally in New
York: “We have to win, and we’re going to be able to send a national message. …
And the thing is, everything we believe in, everything we believe in they hate!
They don’t disagree, they hate! ... http://personalliberty.com/democratic-congressman-gop-won-senate-racist-southerners/

Thursday, November 06, 2014 - Carroll Hospital Center and LifeBridge Health Announce Letter of Intent to Partner
Thursday, November 06, 2014 - Carroll Hospital Center and LifeBridge Health Announce Letter of Intent to Partnerhttp://www.carrollhospitalcenter.org/news/?sid=1&nid=1319 Westminster and Baltimore, Md. – (Nov. 6, 2014) The boards of Carroll Hospital Center and LifeBridge Health announced today that they have approved a letter of intent to form a partnership, combining the strengths of their two health systems to move forward with the vision and resources to enhance and offer exceptional care to the people of Carroll County and the greater Baltimore region, while fostering a model system of quality in an industry undergoing fundamental transformation. The alliance reflects a vision by leaders from two of Maryland’s preeminent nonprofit health systems to form a strategic partnership, designed to meet the changing needs of patients, build a culture of quality and take advantage of extraordinary advances in clinical care. The geographic alignment of the systems will promote greater collaboration for treatments and increase patient access to high quality specialists. “LifeBridge is a perfect partner for Carroll Hospital Center in so many ways; we are both nationally recognized for quality care initiatives and are dedicated to improving the health of our communities. Together, we will continue to honor and carry forward our combined commitment to be the quality health care provider to Carroll County residents, as well as patients from throughout the state and region,” says Leslie Simmons, R.N., F.A.C.H.E., president and chief executive officer of Carroll Hospital Center. “At LifeBridge Health, we are excited about the opportunity to partner with Carroll Hospital Center, an organization that shares our values of quality-based patient care and focus on community. We are committed to building on the success of Carroll Hospital Center’s clinical services and offering expanded services to the people of Carroll County in locations that are closer to home. We look forward to working with our new partners as we build on our combined strengths and move forward together with an aligned focus to bring the highest quality care to the people in our communities,” says Neil Meltzer, president and chief executive officer of LifeBridge Health. With the signing of the letter of intent, the organizations have entered a period of exclusive negotiations and due diligence. The next stage in the transaction — a definitive agreement — is anticipated to be completed in early 2015. The agreement will join Carroll Hospital Center and its affiliates with LifeBridge Health, remaining a nonprofit. The system’s board of directors would include representation from each hospital. The letter of intent outlines the parameters of the negotiations. It provides that LifeBridge Health will support Carroll Hospital Center’s strategic plan, Vision 2020, to grow and advance health care in Carroll County and the surrounding communities with the physicians, services, staff and facilities required to meet forecast needs. “Carroll Hospital Center has a half-century-long tradition of quality, innovation and community service. And in this time of great change in the health care industry, Carroll Hospital Center is looking forward and preparing once again to lead by joining forces with LifeBridge Health to create a new model of care,” says Ethan A. Seidel, Ph.D., chair of the strategic planning committee and immediate past chair of the Carroll Hospital Center board of directors. “Our proposed partnership reflects detailed discussions between our two like-minded systems on how we can work together to expand services in the local Carroll County community and continue to meet the needs of the communities we serve in the highest quality way possible,” says Helen Whitehead, the newly elected chair of the Carroll Hospital Center board of directors. “At LifeBridge Health, our mantra is ‘Caring for Our Communities Together.’ As we move forward with this agreement, we look forward to working with our new partners from Carroll Hospital Center to explore exciting ways to continue to provide the highest quality health care for the people in our communities,” says Jason A. Blavatt, Esq., chairman of the LifeBridge Health board of directors. While the two systems work toward a final agreement, they will be meeting with physicians, nurses, staff and community organizations to discuss the new alliance and identify initial priorities to pursue to enhance the delivery of health care for citizens in the communities they serve. The final agreement will need to be approved by the health system boards, as well as, state and federal regulators. A New Bounty of Oysters in Maryland, but There Is a Snag - NYTimes.com
A New Bounty of Oysters in Maryland, but There Is a Snag - NYTimes.com:
RIDGE, Md. — A diver pulled a large, porous bag of oysters from Calvert Bay and heaved it onto the motorboat, and the sucker fish and baby crabs began to scurry and skid in a vain search for escape along the slippery floor. Another bounty of bivalves, almost ready for market. But not everyone is excited.
Oyster farming, also known as aquaculture, is one of the few growing businesses here on the western shore of Maryland, a sleepy outpost best known for the sunburned watermen who have pulled crabs and fish from bays like Chesapeake and Calvert for generations. Recent changes to state policy and a growing national affection for oysters (sprinkled with lemon juice only, please) have brought back the shellfish, once as much a staple to Maryland as corn is to Iowa. In the past few years, the state has issued 111 oyster farming leases across 2,240 acres of waters; scores more are pending.
The booming oyster business has come into conflict with the watermen of this region, who argue that the cages used to cultivate oysters are a menace to fishing lines and crab pots, and in some cases an eyesore for residents with waterfront homes.
Unlike commercial oyster farmers, watermen can fish, crab and seek wild oysters with a mere license on public waterways. Farmers must get state-issued leases, which some watermen are pressing the state to limit.
“You don’t put one person out of business to start another,” said Robert Brown, the president of the Maryland Watermen’s Association... http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/07/us/a-new-bounty-of-oysters-in-maryland-but-there-is-a-snag.html?emc=edit_th_20141107&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=45685287&_r=0

"As public prekindergarten expands in New York City and other parts of the country, teachers face competing tensions: On the one hand, there’s new pressure to teach more challenging academic material at younger and younger ages.
On the other, there’s mounting concern about the wisdom of shoehorning kindergarten and even first-grade content into the preschool years. Today’s pre-K instructors, for instance, feel much more compelled to teach children their numbers up to 100 or how to begin sounding out words than they used to.
Increasingly, early education experts agree that the best solution is to follow Markarian’s model: Mold and challenge young minds, but do it through purposeful play.
That’s not as easy as it sounds.
“That kind of teaching is much more difficult, and it takes a lot of training,” said Deborah Stipek, a professor of education at Stanford University. It’s much easier to lecture and pass out worksheets or to let kids engage in nonpurposeful and disorganized play—simply ensuring “they don’t beat each other over the head with blocks,” she says. “Really effective teaching is both playful and organized.”"

Republican wave could get even bigger - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
"By Lesley Clark / McClatchy Newspapers WASHINGTON —
The Republican victory wave might end up even larger by the time all the votes are counted.
Already Wednesday, Republicans seized control of the U.S. Senate with a minimum of 52 seats, added to their majority in the House and picked up governorships in deep-blue Democratic states such as Illinois, Maryland and Massachusetts.
And with races in Alaska and Virginia still unsettled and a runoff in Louisiana in December — and all three of those seats now held by Democrats — Republicans could add to their new majority in the Senate.
“The Republican Party is back with youth, with diversity, with women, and we’ve got a long way to go,” said Oregon Rep. Greg Walden, the House Republican campaign chairman, who called the gains “historic” and a referendum on President Barack Obama. “We’re back to a majority as big as any of us have seen in our lifetime.”"

On election night that “mole hill” turned out to be a
mountain—of 76,000 votes and now to paraphrase 538, Anthony Brown has a 100
percent chance of being a spectator come inauguration day.
Larry Hogan’s message of fiscal restraint and generating a
stagnant state economy resonated with voters, while Brown’s lackluster campaign
focused on negativity and scare tactics—a losing strategy for a candidate with
support a mile wide and an inch deep. Brown’s base stayed home, while Hogan’s
showed up to the polls.
With a Republican Governor, and nine new GOP delegates the
2015 legislative session just got a whole lot more interesting.
Here’s a list of the election’s winners and losers
Winners
Larry Hogan: The 62nd Governor of Maryland, not only won, he
won convincingly—by 5 points. He won by doing something different. Three years
ago he began preparing the ground for his campaign message three years ago
through Change Maryland. He started the contest of ideas—such that there was
one with Brown—well ahead of the campaign. Larry defined the narrative of the
campaign before it began. We are overtaxed, businesses overregulated, and our
economy stinks. Larry now has a chance to change the arc of Maryland’s statist
trajectory and expand the realm of economic freedom for Marylanders... http://redmaryland.com/2014/11/something-happened-way-coronation/

There is no such thing as a morning after pill for election results. Life goes on. For a while the general public may have a short respite before the next cycle invades daily stresses and strains.
A question arises: Will the ship be righted? Another question is: Can the ship be straightened?
Maybe time has arrived to turn off news purveyors. Seems like the people really knew all the facts and took to heart that old admonition, enough is enough.
It’s easy as pie to figure out the trauma. The world is going to “Hell in a hand basket.” There is a “fiddler-n-chief” not even strumming pleasing strings. There have been an over-whelming number of do-nothings more interested in scribbling in coloring books, usually reserved for not-of-age youngsters. They are officially called senators.
Let’s go back to the first Tuesday of this month, two days ago. A big and good old dose of “Black Draught” struck, and, sort of, cleaned out the building on Constitution Avenue. It was an evacuant for those who like to call themselves progressives. This latter word supposedly is proof they are good people, but they don’t do good for the 50 states.
In Maryland, the governor’s mansion got a good brisk scouring, too...
