"Inclined to Recline," in the June-July 2016 edition of AARP The Magazine

"Inclined to Recline," in the June-July 2016 edition of AARP The Magazine

Fri. July 29, 2016.

I found this brief article, "Inclined to Recline," in the June-July 2016 edition of AARP The Magazine. It was written by Samaria Brown, AARP Travel Expert, in a column, 'My Travel Tips.'

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10208307945709857&id=1040426835

I have written about this before, at great length - many-many years ago. Flying is quite difficult and certainly not showing any signs of getting better. If anything, it is getting worse.

Writing about all the challenges of flying these days is beyond my patience keyboarding with my thumbs on my phone, but first among equals among the unforced - fixable problems flying are the reclining seats.

After countless incidents why do airlines still have reclining seat on planes? Many articles about the problem suggest that you say politely something to the person who has totally reclined into your personal space, but I have learned the hard way not to bother because this rude behavior is often perpetrated by sociopaths. I just zen it.

The Freedmen's Colony of Roanoke Island 1862 – 1867 http://www.roanokefreedmenscolony.com/

Wed. July 27, 2016

During the Civil War, Union-occupied Roanoke Island, which lies between the North Carolina mainland and the barrier islands known as the Outer Banks, became home to thousands of former slaves. Initially these refugees settled near the Union headquarters, creating a community that included churches and a school. In the spring of 1863, this camp evolved into a government-sanctioned colony. Major General John G. Foster, Commander of the 18th Army Corps, ordered Horace James, a Congregational minister from New England who was serving as a chaplain in the Union army, to establish a colony of former slaves on the island. Although the Roanoke Island freedmen's colony was an experiment of national significance, few people are aware of its history. This site presents an introduction to the colony and the colonial experiment that was conducted there. It also features some primary sources, maps, and projects for students…

Please join me in a quick prayer for the fallen heroes in Dallas TX

Please join me in a quick prayer for the fallen heroes in Dallas TX

July 8th, 2016 Kevin Dayhoff

Being a police, fire fighter, and EMS chaplain just got even harder. Feeling pretty numb – or is that depressed as in anger without the emotions. We are hurting and our hearts are broken. #bluelivesmatter

Please join me in a quick prayer.

May those responsible for the shameless cowardly attacks on the Dallas police officers Thursday evening, July 7, 2016, be brought to justice quickly and may they greatly suffer the consequences of their actions.

May the fallen rest in peace, we’ll take it from here.

May the wounded quickly recover, we pray for healing graces.

May the truth be revealed about the national events that precipitated the recent demonstrations. I believe in redemption. I do not want folks who break the law and resist arrest – with a 20-year rap sheet of violent crimes and weapons violations, to die. I just want them to change for the better - - and I want everyone to come home safe to their families at the end of the day, black and white, red and blue...

May all brothers and sisters in blue and red stay safe.

Our great nation yearns for responsible leadership. May the madness stop.

May we all watch each other’s back. Sometimes there is justice and all too often there is just us.

Amen – I’ll be in the area all day. Semper Fi. July 8, 2016

Westminster Co-op grocery receipt from July 29, 1998.

The Westminster Co-Op began in the late 1930s as a result of discussions involving the Rinehart family, Farm Bureau, and the Grange.

According to information provided by the Co-op many years ago, “by the end of 1947, the Co-Op had 347 members…”

My family, the Wright family, were members, if not founding members.

In 1948, the store moved from Main Street to a brand new large facility in what we know today as Locust Lane – where Paradiso’s carry-out facility is now located. An article in the Democratic Advocate read: “New Co-Op Store A Credit To City - Located Opposite Parking Grounds - Committees Assisting Manager For Official Opening Oct. 7th.— A group of customers representing a cross section of Westminster and Carroll County consumers met at the new Co-op Store on Tuesday night to help the manager select the merchandise for the new store.

"They brought lists of can sizes, types of packages, variety of brands of food and household items they wish the store to carry in order that the New Co-op Market at 8 Locust street, may meet their complete household needs. ‘The Co-op which necessarily has limited its variety of goods until now,’ said Bob Burk, the manager of the new market, ‘will have a new look.’

"We shall attempt to sell all the kinds of goods that our customers may need which are consistent with the quality standards for which the Co-op is known. "Democratic Advocate, October 1, 1948."

Patch: Should Maryland Allow the Sale of Fireworks?

Should Maryland Allow the Sale of Fireworks?

We asked Patch readers from across Maryland what they thought - here's what you said.

Shared from the Annapolis, MD Patch By Patch Staff (Patch Staff) -  July 3, 2016

Fourth of July weekend is upon us which means parades, barbecues and of course - fireworks. The legality of fireworks varies from county to county in Maryland. Fireworks with explosives and projectiles are illegal in the state.

In some local jurisdictions, the sale and use of fireworks — even sparklers — is prohibited. Only gold-labeled sparklers, novelty items -- such as party poppers, snap pops, and snakes -- and ground-based sparkler devices are allowed in Maryland, says the state fire marshal’s office.

In Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince George's counties sparklers are also illegal, with the punishment in Montgomery County potentially escalating to a $1,000 fine or six months in jail.

Purchasing and transporting fireworks across state lines is also considered illegal in Maryland. According to the Baltimore County Government, the use of the following devices are completely forbidden: Firecrackers, Cherry Bombs, Black Cats, M-80s, Crackling Balls and Smoke Bombs, Roman Candles and Bottle Rockets. The complete list can be viewed here.

Patch asked readers and Facebook users across the state if they thought these rules and guidelines were fair, and should Maryland allow fireworks to be sold?

After singing the national anthem between services at Grace Lutheran Church, the next stop for our Estonian dancers is a walking tour of Westminster on their way to the Paide Westminster sign located at the railroad tracks and Main Street in the hearty of historic downtown Westminster. Sun. July 3, 2016 DA CE #estonia

For the past week, June 27 – July 5, 2016, Westminster has hosted two groups of Estonian folk dancers, "Südameke" and "Keerutajad" from Westminster's sister city Paide, thanks, in part, to the hard work of CSM Thomas B. Beyard of the Md National Guard, Audrey Cimino and Jaclyn Mathias-Jones of the Community Foundation of Carroll Co., Aime and Jeff Pringle, and Mari Thalman among many others. Not to be overlooked are members of the Maryland National Guard, Sgt. Matthews Akiba, and Spc. Ronald Maddox for great help with logistics

The visitors include 26 young performers and 10 adults for a total of 36. Among the group are friends of mine, Indrek Kivimäe, a former mayor of Paide, and his wife Tiina, who directs the Paide Girls Choir. Both have visited Westminster before. Most notably Indrek visited us in June 2004 and made a presentation at the Md. Municipal League Convention.

In fact Indrek and Tiina helped host my trip to Estonia in Sept. 2004 when I served as the mayor of Westminster and visited Estonia as part of a diplomatic mission for the Md. National Guard and the U.S. State Department.

Speeders, your grace period is coming to an end.

Speed cameras were installed on the Interstate 695 inner loop between the exits for US 1/Belair Road and Philadelphia Road earlier in the month.

The speed limit is 55 mph, according to Safe Zones, which operates the speed camera program in partnership with Maryland State Police, the State Highway Administration, and Maryland Transportation Authority.

Stories worth talking about tonight:

Maryland’s interstate highways are clogged, and most residents in the state are trapped on those busy roads every day, giving us the dubious honor of second-most congested interstates in the country.

The new report by TRIP, a Washington, DC-based national transportation organization, says 75 percent of Maryland’s urban Interstate highways are congested during peak hours, the second-highest rate in the nation.

Maryland Reporter: Getty in red earns bipartisan praise

Gov. Larry Hogan swore in his chief legislative officer, Joe Getty, to the Court of Appeals at the State House Monday, with a big heaping of bipartisan praise. Getty brings an unusual range of experience to Maryland's highest court, having served as a Republican delegate and senator from Carroll County and chief legislative officer to both Hogan and Gov. Bob Ehrlich, in addition to his private law practice. He offers "an invaluable and unique perspective," said Hogan.

GETTY SWORN IN AS JUDGE: Joseph M. Getty, who has served in two branches of Maryland government, joined the third branch of state government Monday when he was sworn in as a judge on Maryland's highest court, writes Ovetta Wiggins in the Post.

Gov. Larry Hogan said Getty, 64, is smart, fair, reasoned, logical and has a great sense of history, writes Heather Cobun for the Daily Record. "I have the utmost confidence that he will continue to serve the state of Maryland with great honor and distinction," Hogan said.

Getty, donning his new red robes, gained bipartisan praise, Len Lazarick writes in MarylandReporter.com.

Getty sworn-in to Md. Court of Appeals

June 27, 2016 by Kevin Dayhoff

Joseph Getty was sworn in Monday morning in the House of Delegates chamber in the Maryland State House in Annapolis to represent the 3rd Appellate Judicial Circuit on the state's highest court.

Getty, a Manchester resident and former Republican state senator representing Carroll County, had most recently served as Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's chief legislative officer. He was appointed to the Maryland Court of Appeals on June 1 to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Lynne Battaglia.

Friends, family, former and current judges, and members of the General Assembly filled the legislative chamber to witness Hogan administer the oath of office for Getty to become the fifth judge from Carroll County to sit on the Court of Appeals since 1867.

Many speakers at the ceremony mentioned that Getty also made history by having served in all three branches of Maryland government — the legislative, executive branches and now the judiciary. It was a point not missed by local historian, Jay Graybeal, the former executive director of the Historical Society of Carroll County; a position also held by Getty from 1987 to 1994.

Another close colleague of Getty's in the General Assembly, David Brinkley, now secretary of the Md. Dept. of Budget and Management, remarked that Getty "represents a high level of collegiality" and that Getty joins a legacy of political leaders in a state that "is a treasure trove of history… It is rare for someone to serve in both chambers (of the General Assembly,) and the executive branch, and then go on to serve on the bench…"

Md. Gov. Larry Hogan, in his prepared remarks also mentioned that Getty had served in all three branches of government.

Md. Gov. Larry Hogan, in his prepared remarks also mentioned that Getty had served in all three branches of government. He echoed the comments that he made upon the announcement of Getty's appointment June 1, "Joe is a devoted public servant who has spent his entire career and a good portion of his life in service to his community and to our state… His unquestionable integrity, deep legal expertise, and devotion to the people of Maryland make him an excellent fit for the state's highest court. I have complete confidence that he will continue to be a strong advocate for the law and our citizens while serving on the court."

As Getty's extended family looked-on, his wife, Susan Getty, had to hold the large 1772 family Bible with both hands as the oath was administered. Afterwards she received a big kiss from the newly-minted judge; at which time a member of audience pondered with a stage whisper as to whether the kiss was congratulations for holding the Bible up that long or for her husband ascending to the highest judicial post in the state.
