Retired First Sergeant Chief of Operations Chris Collins at McDaniel College dies at age 56

Obituary for Marlon Linton Collins

December 09, 1961 - April 09, 2018

Marlon "Chris" Linton Collins, 56, of Hampstead, passed away on April 9, 2018 at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born December 9, 1961 in Trinidad, West Indies, he was the son of Rosetta (Morales) Collins and the late Harry Collins. He was the beloved husband of Tammy Collins, his wife of 24 years.

He was pastor at Eagle Christian Ministries and had worked at McDaniel College for 29 years, where he retired as First Sergeant Chief of Operations in the Department of Campus Safety.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother is daughter, Lauren Collins; sons, Myles Collins and Christian Collins; brother, Shawn Collins of Moore, OK; sisters, Esther Smith of Hampstead and Lystra Cipriano of Severna Park, MD; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Matthew Collins.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 13, 2018, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm & 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at ELINE FUNERAL HOME, 934 S. Main Street, Hampstead, MD. Services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018, 11:00 am at the Eline Funeral Home. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to River Valley Ranch, 3500 Commerce Drive, Halethorpe, MD 21227 (a Christian children's camp).

From June 27 – July 5, 2016, Westminster will host two groups of Estonian folk dancers, "Südameke" and "Keerutajad" from Westminster's sister city Paide, thanks, in part, to the hard work of CSM Thomas B. Beyard of the Md National Guard, Audrey Cimino and Jaclyn Mathias-Jones of the Community Foundation of Carroll Co., Aime and Jeff Pringle, and Mari Thalman among many others. Not to be overlooked are members of the Maryland National Guard, Sgt. Matthews Akiba, and Spc. Ronald Maddox for great help with logistics

Dr. Griswold was a fixture at the Westminster United Methodist Church. I grew up in the Westminster United Methodist Church and spent much of my childhood, going back to the 1950s, at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel. I have the vaguest memories of Old Main…. Up until the early 1970s, the college was affiliated with the Methodist Church. I was part of the first summer church camps that were integrated at the college. And I have fond memories of talking with Dr. Ensor about the integration of the college.

I have very clear and fond memories of Dr. Griswold. In addition to my memories of Dr. Griswold at church and up at the college, he was also the dad of a Westminster High School Class of 1971 classmate.

He was very kind and always had time for those of us who had a keen interest in the college and the academic – and religious worldview. I was especially intrigued with his films – and his interest in traveling and documenting his travels.

I use many things I learned from Dr. Griswold – to this day. We should never forget the folks who went before us and paved the way for the infrastructure and community we enjoy today.

I had saved a place in my writing schedule to write about him upon the anniversary of his death, but once again, this year, current events have overtaken that opportunity. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway out of linear sequence. I’m not much a fan of linear history anyway. Just saying. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Griswold…..

Services for L. Earl Griswold, retired chairman of the sociology department at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Dr. Griswold, who was 71, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack at his home in Westminster. He retired five years ago as chairman of the sociology department, and had taught courses in anthropology at the college since 1956.

In the 1970s, he made films, many of them on deafness and others on anthropological research in conjunction with the college, and also promotional films for Carroll County and other Maryland subdivisions.

In 1972, one of the films on deafness, "They Grow in Silence," won an award from the Public Broadcasting System. The college for many years has had an extensive degree program accommodating deaf students.

During World War II, he flew B-17s in Europe for the Army Air Corps. He was a psychological warfare officer for the Air Force during the Korean War.

The Carroll County operations center first received a call at approximately 9 a.m. this morning with a report of a small chemical spill on the second floor of Eaton Hall.

At 9:06 a.m. emergency units were dispatched from the Westminster, New Windsor, Reese fire departments, and the Carroll County Hazmat response team.

Campus officials later reported, “A minor laboratory chemical spill occurred in Eaton Hall this morning. Local authorities immediately responded and quickly determined that this was not a life threatening situation. Cleanup is currently in progress. As a precaution, Eaton and Lewis Hall will reopen on Monday morning for regular business hours.”

The first units arrived on scene at 9:10 a.m. with Westminster chief 3-1 in command. Upon arrival, firefighters evacuated the building. At that time the Carroll County hazmat response team monitored the building and evaluated the situation and determined that there was no danger to the public.

According to Westminster fire department officials, the incident involved a small accidental spill involving 3-Heptanone which had spilled down an elevator shaft while being transported by cart.

One person involved in the incident was medically evaluated on the scene by paramedics, but not transported to the hospital. There were no injuries.

The building was returned to McDaniel at 11:15 a.m. for building repairs and minor cleaning. Firefighters and equipment remained on the scene until 11:30 a.m.

Designating a day to celebrate the nation's military power a source of conflict

On Sept. 12, 1924, Westminster, along with communities across the nation, observed National Defense Day.

At the time, the event was billed as a nationwide drill to test the readiness of our nation's defenses in the event of an attack.

Many local businesses, fire companies, schoolchildren, the Westminster Municipal Band and the Western Maryland College Football squad all took part in the parade.

The article also goes to great lengths to explain: "The members of Company H Machine Gun Company entertained the crowd with demonstrations in machine gun firing... Four machine guns were set up on the southern terrace of Hoffa field (at Western Maryland College — now known as McDaniel College) with four targets… The shooting was decidedly accurate.… Tracer bullets were used in the final shooting event. One target was a five gallon can of gasoline which was struck by the second shot. The can flamed in a mass when struck by the bullet."

Somehow, I simply cannot imagine such an occasion these days.
