Memorial service to celebrate Dr Ira Zepp’s life August 29 2009

A memorial service celebrating Ira Zepp’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 29 on campus at Big Baker Chapel (on the campus of McDaniel College, Westminster, MD) with the Rev. Carroll Yingling officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at McDaniel Lounge.

Zepp, a 1952 alumnus and Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at McDaniel College who inspired generations of students to lead lives committed to service, activism and peace, died Aug. 1. He was 79.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ira & Mary Zepp Center for Nonviolence and Peace Education, P.O. Box 552, Westminster, MD 21158. Arrangements are by the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Westminster. Online condolences may be made to the family at http://www.myersdurborawfh.com/.

The Rev. Ira Zepp, who passed away this week, was a teacher like no other. In his recent book, Zepp wrote:

"A teacher is someone who is willing and humble enough to drink from the instructional wells of those who have preceded us and continue to be nourished by them: the Hindu sages, the prophets' call for justice, the discipline of the shamans, the wisdom teachers of all traditions, the gifts and graces of the saints, plus every teacher we've ever had. A teacher is someone who is devoted to students and is willing to endure the vertigo of vulnerability which inevitably accompanies the intimacy of human relationships and unanswered questions. This is the pedagogy of the heart."

Dr. Zepp truly touched many lives, including mine. He was many different things for many people. In addition to his many professional accomplishments, if you were fortunate enough to have crossed his path, he was a trusted friend and advisor, a college professor, a stalwart foot soldier in the civil rights movement, an author of twelve books, and certainly the conscience and soul of McDaniel College and Westminster.

The dedication of Hoffa Field and the Sheathing of the Sword at McDaniel College in June 1922

On Saturday, June 10, 1922, the formal dedication of the Hoffa athletic field took place on the campus of Western Maryland College - now McDaniel College.

Of course, many know the field as where the Baltimore Ravens hold their summer practices.

Others know the field for the great tradition of tailgating at McDaniel football games. The running track, which circles the field, is always a favorite spot for health conscious walkers and runners.

Today McDaniel College is accepted as presiding prominently in the center, more or less, of Westminster. However, this was not the case until around the 1970s when housing developments began to grow to the west of the campus.

In 1922, the campus was on the outer western edge of Westminster on the brink of a frontier of forest and farmland that stretched for ten miles until one arrived in Taneytown.

According to a definitive history of the college, “Fearless and Bold,” published just recently by Dr. James E. Lightner; the Geiman property, a 65-acre farm contiguously situated to the west of the campus became available to the college, in 1920, upon the death of W. H. Geiman.

As an aside, for anyone who is even remotely interested in the social, economic, political, or academic history of Westminster, McDaniel College, and Carroll County, “Fearless and Bold” is a must addition for your library.

Those of us, who were aware that Dr. Lightner was laboring to write the book, were very eager to lay our hands on a copy after it was printed in 2007.

We were not disappointed. Do not be put off by its sheer volume. At 713 pages, it can easily intimidate. However, it is well segmented. One may open the book to any page and find that Dr. Lightner packs facts together, in an easily read and engaging conversational approach that makes the book quite hard to put down.

It is a spellbinding story of intrigue and success against all odds; that will captivate even the reader who is not easily drawn to tomes of history.

It is chapter six that Dr. Lightner writes that the trustees of the college, “were always alert to possible campus expansion…”

After the death of Mr. Geiman, the property “suddenly came on the market, and the board authorized (college president Thomas Hamilton) Lewis to purchase it for $26,201…

“It was formally deeded on March 31, 1920, using endowment funds. The purchase agreement allowed Charles Geiman to lease back part of the farm, while a portion would be used for new athletic fields.

“At the June meeting (of the board of trustees,) the alumni visitors to the board stressed the urgent need for improving the fields, and the Buildings and Grounds Committee was empowered to act.”

And “act” they did. In the following chapter, Dr. Lightner reports that “on Saturday, June 10, a warm and sunny day, the formal dedication of the Hoffa Field was held before an audience of 5,000.”

The dedication was followed by the “presentation of ‘The Sheathing of the Sword: A Pageant of Peace,’” according to another local historian, Jay Graybeal.

Fortunately, in the late 1990s, Graybeal reprinted a June 16, 1922 front-page article which appeared in the now out-of-print American Sentinel newspaper. According to his introduction: “The community event (which followed the dedication) was written by Miss Dorothy Elderdice of Westminster. Her introduction provides an overview of her production:

“‘In The Sheathing of the Sword, I have endeavored to select from the different ages a few significant historical episodes that lend themselves to pageantry. Peace in panoply has been my quest---Peace heralded by song, attended by art, crowned by humanity.’”

This is where we will pick up the story in a future column. We are fortunate that Dr. Lightner and the June 1922 American Sentinel newspaper article have left us with an extensive and fascinating account of the “The Sheathing of the Sword.”

Bringing Corbit's Charge, and Douglass, back to Westminster

Last weekend, the field across the street of the Carroll County Office Building in Westminster was transformed to the days of June 1863, during the Civil War.

Organized by the Corbit's Charge Commemoration Committee and the Pipe Creek Civil War Round Table, the gathering marked the 146th anniversary of the June 29, 1863, Battle of Westminster, also known as Corbit's Charge.

It was scene filled with tents, campfires and military equipment, as men and women representing both the Union and Confederate side of the conflict went about the business of presenting a living history of sights, sounds and smells of the Civil War.

The commemoration included a parade to the park beside the historic Court House where a wreath was placed at the monument for Corbit's Charge. That was followed by wreath laying ceremonies at the grave of Lt. Murray, who died in the June 1863 battle, and was buried in the Ascension Church cemetery.

It was on a sleepy summer day in June 1863, on Washington Road and East Main Street, in Westminster, that about 90 men of the Union First Delaware Cavalry, led by Capt. Charles Corbit, found themselves facing 5,000 rebel soldiers from a cavalry division of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Major Gen. J.E.B. Stuart.

Confederate forces routed the Delaware soldiers. Yet, the battle is considered by many to have been one of many contributing factors in the outcome of the war -- because the brief skirmish took place days before the fateful meeting of Union Gen. George G. Meade and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, in Gettysburg, Pa, July 1-3.

Local historian Col. Tom LeGore says the skirmish delayed Stuart's ability to get to Gettysburg in time to significantly help Lee's forces and was a contributing factor in the eventual defeat of the Confederate army at Gettysburg. In those horrific three days, more than 160,000 soldiers fought, resulting in more than 50,000 casualties -- and a Union victory.

One of the highlights of last weekend's living history events was a 45-minute presentation by the famed orator Frederick Douglass, portrayed by Michael Crutcher Sr., of Kentucky.

"Douglass" was introduced to the audience by Ron Kuehne, outreach coordinator for the Pipe Creek Civil War Roundtable, in his role as Westminster mayor Michael Baughman, 1861-1864.

More than 100 folks gathered in the tent at the campground to hear the story of Douglass, born in 1818, in Talbot County, and his struggles as a slave, his escape from servitude and his subsequent rise to become a distinguished statesman, editor, author and diplomat.

On Tuesday, June 16, President Barack Obama was interrupted by a pesky, deranged and suicidal housefly during an interview with CNBC's John Harwood.

The drama was captured on video, with a life and death struggle befitting a History Channel segment pertaining to World War II.

It has since unfolded hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube.

One published account referred to the president as "Obamazilla." A writer for the Washington newspaper, Politico, regaled that the "president has been getting lots of kudos for a lightning-fast, Mr. Miyagi-worthy swipe he employed to slay a pesky house fly that was buzzing him ..."

Politico wrote a play-by-play description of the president's performance: " 'Get out of here,' Obama said as the fly buzzed him during his interview. The pest persisted, and when it landed on his left forearm, Obama smacked it. 'Now, where were we?' the president said without missing a beat. Pleased with himself, he added, 'That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker.' "

Many were impressed. That is, with the exception of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Politico reported that PETA called it an "execution," and wants the commander-in-chief to show a little more compassion to even "the least sympathetic animals."

It made me think that if PETA was alarmed over the president killing a fly, one can only wonder what that organization would have thought of the 1914 "Swat the Fly" campaign in Westminster.

On Saturday, June 10, 1922, the formal dedication of the Hoffa athletic field took place on the campus of Western Maryland College — now McDaniel College.

Of course, many know the field as where the Baltimore Ravens hold their summer practices.

Others know the field for the great tradition of tailgating at McDaniel football games. The running track, which circles the field, is always a favorite spot for health conscious walkers and runners.

Today McDaniel College is accepted as presiding prominently in the center, more or less, of Westminster. However, this was not the case until around the 1970s when housing developments began to grow to the west of the campus.

In 1922, the campus was on the outer western edge of Westminster on the brink of a frontier of forest and farmland that stretched for ten miles until one arrived in Taneytown.

According to a definitive history of the college, “Fearless and Bold,” published just recently by Dr. James E. Lightner; the Geiman property, a 65-acre farm contiguously situated to the west of the campus became available to the college, in 1920, upon the death of W. H. Geiman.

It's halfway through June, and for those of us who love Maryland's melting heat and humidity, many are wondering — where is summer?

For me, though, thoughts turn to the birth of Frankenstein.

First things first. In 1816, there really was a "year without summer." Carol Lee, in her book, "Legacy of the Land," explains that the year without summer caused quite a bit of hardship in Carroll County. "Farmers in Maryland and elsewhere would remember 1816 as ... 'eighteen hundred and starve-to-death.' " According to Lee, there were freezing temperatures well into June.

What caused the year without summer? According to a July 2002 article in Smithsonian magazine, "Blast from the Past," by Robert Evans, the agricultural and economic catastrophe of 1816 was a volcanic winter, caused by the eruptions of Mount Tambora on the island of Sumbawa, in what we now know as Indonesia, April 5-15, 1815.

David W. Herlocker and the 28th running of the Westminster Main Street Mile

Earlier this evening was the 28th running of the Westminster Main Street Mile. The event went well, in spite of the rain. And of course, another reason the event went well, was because of the excellent hard work of Beth Weisenborn, the Westminster Road Runners Club Webmaster and Main Street Mile Registration Director.

Other folks were greatly contributed include: Bob Paczynski, Alan Gowen, Jim Beacham, Scott Kohr, Alan Gowen Lynn Richardson, Linda Morris, Debbie Leathers, Christine Webbert, Kim and Robert Muhl, Pam Gowen, Grant Hadden Bob Sommerville, Tim Gosnell, Chris Reese, Jack Klein, Caroline Babylon, Gorman Davis, Jack Klein, Scott Kohr, Alan & Pam Gowen, Robert & Kim Muhl, Grant Hadden, Debbie Leathers, Christine Webbert, Carole Williamson, and Sharon Larrimore… (Beth, who did I miss?)

But before, during and after the race, my thoughts were of Dr. Dave Herlocker…

Dr. Herlocker was one of the patriarchs of the annual Westminster Road Runners Club Westminster Street Mile. He passed away last Friday, March 21, 2008.

He passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 right before the 27th running of the event. The race will hardly be the same without him.

Dave Herlocker was a well-respected scientist, McDaniel College professor, runner, community leader, fellow member of Grace Lutheran Church and a good friend.

Below, please find a video tribute to Dr. Herlocker. Some of the initial pictures in this video are my additions. Later, this tribute consists of the video that the family and Fletchers Funeral Home put together.

His obituary read:

David Webb Herlocker, 67, of Westminster, died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home on Friday, March 21, 2008.

Born October 30, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, he is the son of Donald Herlocker and the late Betty Comfort Herlocker. He was raised in Peoria, Illinois.

He was a 1962 graduate of Knox College and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1966 with a doctorate in inorganic chemistry.

In 1966, he began a long career teaching chemistry at Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. He served as the Chemistry Department chair department chair for many years. He retired in 2006 and was named an emeritus faculty member. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Chemical Society, and other professional organizations.

He began running in the mid 1970s and was a member of the Westminster and York Road Runner Clubs. He was an organizer of many road races in and around Westminster, including the Main Street Mile. After an accident in 1995 left him unable to run, he continued to walk daily with friends. He was a recognizable figure at many races with his loyal canine companion, Badie.

He was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church and served on the church council and scholarship committee. He was active in Ardent Folk, a ministry providing meals to those in need.

He was a member of the parent organizing committee which founded the Westminster Montessori School in 1974. He helped to develop and implement the school’s chemistry curriculum. Since his retirement he has volunteered weekly in their science classes.

An avid sports fan, he followed the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and the McDaniel women’s basketball and volleyball teams. He was a 27-year member of a book club and a lover of history and trivia.

Remembering him are children and partners Caryn Herlocker Meade and Adam Meade of Raleigh, NC and Daniel Herlocker and Ellen Keelan of Brattleboro, VT; father Donald Herlocker of Canton, IL; brother and sister-in-law William and Hilda Herlocker of Kildeer, IL; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Peter Speck of Wanganui New Zealand; grandchildren Evan and Georgia Meade; former wife and friend Helen Herlocker; and numerous friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St, Westminster with his pastors Rev. Kevin and Martha Clementson officiating.

Inurnment of ashes will be in Grace Lutheran Church Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in support of the Ardent Folk social ministry.

The Westminster Police Department is currently investigating a hit and run fatal collision which occurred on Friday, February 6, 2009 at approximately 2300 hours.

A Ford pickup truck was involved in a minor collision as it was backing from a parking space in the Municipal parking lot at the intersection of Railroad Ave and Main St. in downtown Westminster. The witness contacted Westminster Police and indicated the suspect vehicle was last scene proceeding westbound on West Main Street at a high rate of speed.

Approximately one mile west on West Main Street, the driver of the Ford pickup truck struck the rear of a 2003 Chevy Cavalier which had just exited McDaniel College and was proceeding west on West Main Street. After the collision, the driver of the Ford pickup fled the scene and has not been located despite searches by officers on foot utilizing K-9 as well as an aerial search by the MSP helicopter.

The Chevy Cavalier was occupied by five passengers. The left rear passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment. One passenger was treated and released from Carroll Hospital Center and the three other passengers remain at University of Maryland Shock Trauma with non life threatening injuries. All of the passengers in the Chevy Cavalier are students at McDaniel College.

The investigation is being conducted by Det. J. Schuster from the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Westminster Police Department with assistance from the Maryland State Police C.R.A.S.H. Team.

The identities of the deceased and injured are as follows:

Deceased: Thomas Rouleau, 19, Gilboa, NY

Injured:

Megan Magee, 19, Belair, Md. Treated and released from Carroll Hospital Center.
Katenna Minadakis, 19, Hampstead, Md. Non life threatening injuries. Currently at Shock Trauma.
PatriciaMellott, 19, Cumberland, Md. Non life threatening injuries. Currently at Shock Trauma.
David Arnold, 19, Catonsville, Md. Non life threatening injuries. Currently at Shock Trauma.

"Chorus Line" – Review

"Chorus Line" opened Tuesday at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. That should be quite enough for anyone who knows the slightest thing about theatre; they should rush to buy tickets for the show that ends a week from Sunday, on December 14. It lasted 15 years on Broadway and was brought back for a two-year revival that spawned the national tour visiting Charm City. This is a true stage icon.

A former CIA insider is visiting McDaniel College on Monday to discuss the corruption and politicization of U.S. intelligence that led him to resign from the agency in 1990.

Nearly two decades later, the agency’s weaknesses continue to put the country and its citizens at risk, said Melvin Goodman, who served as division chief and senior analyst at the CIA’s Office of Soviet Affairs from 1966 to 1990.

“[Sept.] 11 shouldn’t have been such a surprise,” said Goodman, calling the 2001 terrorist attacks an intelligence failure.

Goodman’s talk at the college’s ninth annual Resnick Lecture on Monday will relate to a new undergraduate course called “September 11th and Its Aftermath,” which explores why the attacks happened and analyzes the response of the Bush administration, according to political science professor Christianna Leahy, who is teaching the course.
