Munch’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives
According to the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives website, http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/diners-drive-ins-and-dives.html, “Host Guy Fieri takes a cross-country road trip to visit some of America's classic "greasy spoon" restaurants - diners, drive-ins and dives - that have been doing it right for decades.”

On Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/munchsrestaurant, Munch’s says, “For some it's like "mama used to make", for others, it's the Legendary Munchburger or Famous Fried Green Tomatoes. Others come for the camaraderie and to sample some of the great ideas Larry comes up with on a daily basis. Munch's offers homemade sausages, soups, daily lunch specials, in addition to the menu. BBQ Fridays has become a big hit and Fried Chicken has been added to the menu on Saturdays, per customer request. Breakfast & Lunch are served up until 3:00 p.m., check out our menu and daily specials ~ You definitely won't go away hungry…”

As the smartphone calendar app closes on 2013, we can open it up for 2014 and start tapping in a busy year of notable events.

… Baltimore, we will be celebrating the 200th birthday of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in early September with tall ships, the Blue Angels, fireworks and much more.

It was in the early hours of Sept. 14, 1814, that Francis Scott Key gazed through the haze of a British bombardment at Fort McHenry and spied the Stars and Stripes, which inspired him to write the poem that was to become the national anthem…

[…]

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 in the Senate will be contested in November, as well as 38 governorships — including in Maryland.
[…]

Voters in Scotland will vote on possible independence from the United Kingdom.

[…]

In 1914, the War to End All Wars began with the assassination June 28 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Just a month earlier, Congress passed a joint resolution creating Mother's Day.

The Panama Canal will celebrate its 100th birthday, and so will frozen food. It took 10 years and cost 5,600 lives to create the shortcut between the American coasts. And a century ago, Clarence Birdseye sold the first frozen fish.

@SunWestminster: Columnist @kevindayhoff addresses Westminster #Christmas traditions in this week's Eagle Archives http://bsun.md/18HM1X2

The Christmas season has always been a special time in Westminster. For generations; long before our current tradition of an electric light parade right after Thanksgiving, the city came together for a community celebration and a parade called the Christmas Treat…

[…]

Times have changed. The center of town is now considered to be the park at Locust Lane. Government does not dare use the words "Christmas" or "Hanukkah." And technology, not fruit, is at the top of the Christmas list for most folks. In my childhood years in Westminster in the 1950s, our favorite fruit was not an "Apple" computer. A gift of oranges was considered to be particularly special…

A revolutionary idea in coffee at the Furnace Hills Coffee Co. [Eagle Archives] By Kevin Dayhoff 9:02 a.m. EDT, October 2, 2013

[…]

A number of popular coffee shops have started in Carroll County in recent years. A recent trip to the Furnace Hills Coffee Co. at 71 West Main St., in Westminster reveals an egalitarian use for coffee that is revolutionary.

At Furnace Hills, the aroma of coffee wafted into the street Saturday afternoon, the day before the national coffee holiday. There, Regina Harshman was juggling business phone calls, roasting coffee beans, and doing various housekeeping chores among huge sacks of coffee beans at the one room coffee shop next to Harry’s Main Street Grille.

[…]

One frequent customer, Abby Gruber, the Westminster Director of Recreation and Parks, says she loves Furnace Hills coffee. “The shop is right there near the city offices. The smell just calls you. I always enjoy the company and the coffee there.”

Eagle Archive: Where were you when Twinkie the Kid and Captain Cupcake died?

Eagle Archive: Where were you when Twinkie the Kid and Captain Cupcake died?

Eagle Archive: Where were you when Twinkie the Kid and Captain Cupcake died? By Kevin E. Dayhoff Dec 8, 2012 http://tinyurl.com/bqf5tfo

November 21, 2012, was a sad day.

As many were looking forward to sharing Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family; Hostess Brands, the makers of Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Ding Dongs and many other culinary delights high in the food pyramid, announced it was closing its 85-year old business.

The Hostess Brands website did not mince words, "Hostess Brands is Closed. We are sorry to announce that Hostess Brands, Inc. has been forced by a Bakers Union strike to shut down all operations and sell all company assets.

"Thank you for all of your loyalty and support over the years. …The wind down means the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes, 570 bakery outlet stores and the loss of 18,500 jobs."

If such treats as Suzy Q's, Dolly Madison Zingers and HoHos are not a critical part of your childhood, then certainly you remember the holy trinity of spokespersons for Hostess: Captain Cupcake, Fruit Pie the Magician and Twinkie the Kid.

Certainly many of the 30 Hostess products are a strong childhood memory for many Carroll Countians. As soon as the news that an expiration date had finally been determined for the Twinkies family, the Eagle Archives crisis lines lit-up with inquiries as whether or not it was true that Dolly Madison and Twinkie the Kid were no longer with us… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-1209-20121208,0,344660.story

Chick-fil-A will be celebrating Back to School day on August 18, 2012.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/102909357/Chick-fil-A-will-be-celebrating-Back-to-School-day-on-August-18-2012

Tuesday, August 14, 2012, Westminster MD - We stopped over at the Chick-fil-A in the Westminster Shopping Center at the corner of Englar Road and Rte 140 in Westminster, MD for dinner Tuesday evening.

Along with our food came a little flyer saying that the local Chick-fil-A will be celebrating Back to School day on August 18, 2012.

I also attached a flyer that we got last December. The Chick-fil-A Trays flyer was discussed at great length at several public safety non-profits, of which I belong.

I know that many of us go out of our way to patronize the local Chick-fil-A, because the restaurant is so supportive of our local community…

Chick-fil-A has excellent food; runs a great restaurant, has excellent customer service, and is very supportive of local firefighters and law enforcement, non-profits and the community.

By all measures, Chick-fil-A is reported to be a good employer, and is a valuable contributor to the local community.

Chick-fil-A, chicken, food, restaurants, Westminster, Maryland, firefighters, law enforcement, public safety, catering,

Hopefully you and your family will join former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee today and be sure to patronize your local Chick fil-A restaurant in honor of ‘Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.’ http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5261

Governor Huckabee organized the event in the wake of the un-American, intolerant, hate campaign being waged against the Atlanta-based restaurant chain after its president, Dan Cathy, told the author of the “Biblical Recorder,” a journal of the Baptist Press, his personal views on gay marriage.

In an article, “‘Guilty as charged,’ Mr. Cathy says of Chick-fil-A's stand on biblical & family values,” writer K. Allan Blume, explains, “Dan Cathy oversees one of the country's most successful businesses.

“As president and chief operating officer of Chick-fil-A, Cathy leads a business with 1,608 restaurants that had sales of more than $4 billion dollars last year…

“His father, S. Truett Cathy started the business in 1946… In 1967, his father opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Atlanta…

In an excellent article on the matter by Jamie Smith Hopkins, “Chick-fil-A president's words on gay marriage spark tempest,” penned for The Baltimore Sun, Ms. Hopkins reports that Mr. Cathy said that Chick-fil-A is “very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit.”… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5261

Caterer serves up fare with international flair for G-8

ML Carroll Canapés Catering

May 19, 2012 By Courtney Mabeus News-Post Staff

CAMP ROUND MEADOW -- It's been a long week for ML Carroll, she said Friday night as she leaned against a wood-paneled wall in a cabin at Camp Round Meadow. A helicopter could be heard whirling off in the distance.

Leaders from the G-8 countries began arriving Friday evening for a round of talks that would last through today. Along with them came hundreds of journalists and other support staff. At least a few local residents were on hand to help keep some of the hungry travelers fed.

But Carroll, president of Canapés Catering, which is based in Frederick and also provides catering for ThorpeWood, a mountain retreat in Thurmont, didn't even initially plan to be here. Word-of-mouth, she said, provided the impetus that led her to the camp Friday… http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?StoryID=135937
