The Knauers

The Knauers, also known as Carrie Ann Knauer

October 10, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Somewhere just outside of Reading, Pennsylvania, October 10, 2009 - - Although those of us who know Carroll County Times staff writer, Carrie Ann Knauer, understand that she has quickly become a brand-name and an institution all to herself; many are not aware that, according to Wikipedia, she is also a community located in Brecknock Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, located 3.4 miles from Adamstown and 0.9 miles from Alleghenyville.

According to “PA HomeTownLocator,” “Knauers is a community or populated place (Class Code U6) located in Berks County at latitude 40.247 and longitude -75.997 (Knauers Panoramio Photos). The elevation is 774 feet. Knauers appears on the Morgantown U.S. Geological Survey Map. Berks County is in the Eastern time zone (GMT -5). Observes DST? Yes. Current Time. In a write-up on AmericanTowns.com:

“Brecknock Township, (889 Alleghenyville Road Mohnton, PA 19540) [was] named after the cathedral town of Brecon, capitol of Breconshire (or Brecknockshire), Wales, was founded in 1740 as a part of Lancaster County. The Township was divided at the founding of Berks County in 1752. The earliest permanent settlers on the Berks County side were three Bowman brothers, namely Jacob, John, and Christian, who moved up from Pequea about 1735 to occupy land along the upper part of the Allegheny Creek.

“The first tax collector for Brecknock (Berks) was Jeremiah Ziemer who immigrated from Germany in 1738. The first tax list in 1752 contained 36 names, all of German, Alsatian, and Swiss origin. The first federal census in 1790 reported that there were 60 households in the Township. By 1870 there were four churches in Brecknock – two Mennonite churches, one Lutheran-Reformed Union church, and one independent church.

“By 1893 there were three U.S. Post Offices – Knauers, Alleghenyville, and Hummel’s Store, all of which were closed by 1913, after which postal service was provided from Mohnton. There were six one-room public schools operating in the Township by 1895 – Allegheny, Maple Grove, Stafford, Trostel’s, Gebhart (Union), and Remp’s, all of which were closed by Fall of 1955 when the new Brecknock School opened.

“In 1900 there were 203 property owners, 54 tenant families, and seven single men on the tax list. Total tax receipts for the year ending March 24, 1900 amounted to $1,355.00, nearly all of which went for road maintenance. Throughout its history Brecknock Township has been almost entirely agricultural.

“Until recent times, nearly all of its residents were engaged in dairy and related farming, or fruit and vegetable truck farming. Also several residents were employed in related occupations such as harness-making, blacksmithing, charcoal making for nearby iron furnaces, timbering, and the operation of sawmills and gristmills. Taverns were operated at various times at Knauers and Hummel’s Store.” (Additional information may be found at
Brecknock Township or here: http://www.americantowns.com/pa/mohnton/organization/brecknook_township

It is not known if our “The Knauer” was ever involved in the above-mentioned tavern.

For additional context, according to Wikipedia, the adjacent municipalities include Spring Township, Berks County (northwest); Cumru Township, Berks County (north); Robeson Township, Berks County (east); Caernarvon Township, Berks County (southeast); Brecknock Township, Lancaster County (southwest); and Adamstown Lancaster County (southwest)

Knauer, long rumored a future mayoral candidate casts her vote

By Kevin Dayhoff

May 11, 2009

Carrie Ann Knauer casts her vote in the Westminster municipal elections at the Westminster Fire Department John Street Quarters at 28 John Street in Westminster.

No further developments have been revealed as to Ms. Knauer’s future political aspirations although her name has frequently been mentioned as a good mayoral candidate at some point in time in the future.

Think about it – it fits, Westminster Mayor Carrie Knauer. It works.

As of 3:30 this afternoon, approximately 465 voters had come to the polls to vote in the Westminster municipal elections – including future Mayor Knauer.

Polls will remain open until 7 pm. The mayor’s office and two council seats are contested. The winners are expected to be announced at the Westminster Common Council meeting this afternoon at Westminster city hall at 1838 Emerald Lane.

Candidates for election in Westminster today are: Mayor: Suzanne Albert, Dennis Frazier, Kenneth Hornberger and Kevin Utz. Council: Anthony Chiavacci, Eleanor DeMario, William Gill, Damian Halstad, Darcel Harris and William Hughes.

Locals running in the rain by Pat Stoetzer

Pat Stoetzer did a nice job with the Main Street Mile in Westminster last Wednesday – although he isn’t nearly as attractive as Carrie Ann Knauer…

Locals running in the rain by Pat Stoetzer Times Staff Writer Thursday, April 16, 2009

Ice cream sandwiches fueled many feet in Wednesday’s Main Street Mile.

The idea of venturing outside, braving the chilly, wet conditions and working up a quick sweat while running in downtown Westminster might not have been enough for some, but there were plenty of participants in the annual race. The 28th running of the Main Street Mile was a hit despite the dreary weather, which didn’t prevent fast times and big smiles on many faces.

Chris Frock, a senior at Winters Mill, hadn’t run in the Mile since he was a freshman. But there he was, the reigning Times Boys Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, crossing the finish line in 4 minutes, 9 seconds to win the championship heat.

(The novice heat, or “fun run,” was run after the 7 p.m. championship run, and that race featured more parents and their children.)

GM and Chrysler Ordered Out of NASCAR

Time magazine listed some April Fools Day hoaxes from last Wednesday that are fairly sophisticated and in several instances, quite funny.

Thankfully CAK posted a link to the article on her Facebook page.

Fake Pandas! And Other April Fools' Day Hoaxes By Howard Chua-Eoan Wednesday, Apr. 01, 2009

The annual assaults can be either subtle or brazen. And, really, people should see them coming. But in a media world addicted to drama and the bizarre, credulity will always take a hit. April Fools' Day 2009 is no different. From the Middle East, where peace threatened to break out, to Switzerland, where the national obsession with neatness created jobs for mountain cleaners, the world once again fell prey to an array of hoaxers, fibbers and tellers of tall tales — all excused by a strange yearly tradition of mysterious origin. Here are a few of the bogus news items that have appeared on our radar:

GM and Chrysler Ordered Out of NASCAR Caranddriver.com

"In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globe — Honda and Audi, to name two — have drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending.

A complete withdrawal from America's premier racing series is expected to save more than $250 million between GM and Chrysler, a substantial amount considering the drastic measures being implemented elsewhere." [April Fools!]

4-H’ers heading to national competitions by Carrie Ann Knauer

4-H’ers heading to national competitions By Carrie Ann Knauer, Carroll County Times Staff Writer

Monday, September 08, 2008

Four teens from Francis Scott Key High School will represent the state at several regional and national livestock judging competitions this fall after winning the top positions in the 4-H competition at the Maryland State Fair last weekend.

This is the first time that the four-person A team will be made up of youths from the same county, let alone the same school, said Kathy Gordon, 4-H youth development extension educator for Carroll.

About 30 youths competed in the 4-H livestock judging competition at the Maryland State Fair Aug. 30, Gordon said. During the competition, the youths examine several rounds of beef cattle, sheep and swine, and judge them on their physical build and characteristics. They rank the animals in each class, then submit their rankings to be compared to the professional judges’ rankings.

Claire Bennett won first place with 614 points, followed by Drew Cashman in second place with 613 points and Lukas Ziegler in third place with 610 points. Claire’s brother Troy Bennett placed seventh with 578 points...

Julia Child part of WWII era spy ring

Photo caption: It is not known as to whether or not Carrie Ann Knauer, pictured above interviewing Ms. Child in an undated photograph, followed in Ms. Child’s footsteps. She is indeed not only an excellent writer and cook - - but was she also once a secret agent? Kevin Dayhoff - File photo circa 2000.

Julia Child part of WWII era spy ring. Reports unsubstantiated that
Carrie Ann Knauer was also once a secret agent

August 13, 2008

As many folks who follow the news are aware, it was recently revealed that Julia Child was part of a WWII-era spy ring

As you can read in the Associated Press story: “Other notables identified in the files include John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Quentin and Kermit Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police.”

However it has not been confirmed as to whether or not Carroll County’s very own “Rachael Ray” was ever a spy. We all know
Carrie Ann Knauer’s work; she’s the prolific writer with the Carroll County Times who well known for her excellent coverage of Carroll County’s number one industry, agriculture, the environment and Carroll County’s number one love – food.

Did indeed, Ms. Knauer, pictured above interviewing Ms. Child in an undated photograph, follow in Ms. Child’s footsteps – and is indeed not only an excellent writer and cook - - but was also a secret agent.

Perhaps we’ll never know.

What is known is that Ms. Knauer first burst into the news media when she came to the
Carroll County Times in February 2002. Of course this coincides well with fact that Ms. Childs moved to a retirement community in Santa Barbara, California, in 2001…

We are also aware that Ms. Knauer has been known to disappear for periods of time in which her locational whereabouts are not disclosed

Hmmm, makes you wonder, now doesn’t it.

By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE and RANDY HERSCHAFT, Associated Press Writers Wed Aug 13, 11:10 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Famed chef Julia Child shared a secret with Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg and Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg at a time when the Nazis threatened the world.

They served in an international spy ring managed by the Office of Strategic Services, an early version of the CIA created in World War II by President Franklin Roosevelt.

The full secret comes out Thursday, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the first centralized intelligence effort by the United States. The National Archives, which this week released a list of the names found in the records, will make available for the first time all 750,000 pages identifying the vast spy network of military and civilian operatives.

They were soldiers, actors, historians, lawyers, athletes, professors, reporters. But for several years during World War II, they were known simply as the OSS. They studied military plans, created propaganda, infiltrated enemy ranks and stirred resistance among foreign troops.

Rumors are circulating in Westminster that Carrie Knauer has run off with Johnny Depp

Friday, May 23, 2008

Recently folks have noticed that Carroll County’s own Rachael Ray – Carroll County Times reporter Carrie Ann Knauerthe local journalist with the best shoes, as been missing. Well, at least she has not had many stories published in the newspaper recently.

This is cause for concern as many of us go into “Knauer Withdrawal Syndrome,” when we can’t get a regular dose of news from her.

As was reported here: “20080429 Carrie Knauer and Johnny Depp in Westminster,” on “Soundtrack,” she was noticed to be in the company of Johnny Depp recently. Perhaps there is always the possibility that she ran off with him.

Of course, the last time she was “missing,” she was actually in an undisclosed location with Vice President Dick Cheney as we revealed here: “20061115 Carrie Knauer and Mission to Baghdad,” exclusively on “Soundtrack.”

Well, after I developed a milk cartoon poster in preparation of launching a search effort – I spotted her. Or at least what I believe to have been her, at the Westminster Fire Hall attending the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department’s “Big Money Raffle.”

Of course, the person that appeared to be Ms. Knauer could have really could’ve been a replicant.

Let’s see if anyone else has a recent Knauer sighting…
