Lone gunman robs 7-11 in Union Bridge

Robber remains at large after taking cash

By Kevin Dayhoff | June 14, 2011

A lone gunman remains at large this morning after robbing the 7-11 convenience store in Union Bridge late last night.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, around 2:30 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a hold-up alarm in the 100-block of Main Street in Union Bridge.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Major Phillip S. Kasten, reports the initial investigation has revealed that “a white male approximately 5’-10” tall wearing a black ‘hoodie,’ white mask, and black gloves entered the store displaying a handgun and demanded money from the cashier.”

No one was hurt in the robbery.

The suspect then fled from the store on foot after taking an undisclosed amount of cash.

The Sheriff’s Office investigation is continuing.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Corporal Doug Epperson at 410-386-2574, or the toll free anonymous TIPS Hotline at 1-888-399-TIPP (8477).

Carroll County MD Sheriff’s Deputy injured in traffic mishap

By Kevin Dayhoff

Posted 2/10/11

Sergeant Brad Brown, a twenty-year veteran of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, suffered minor injuries earlier this afternoon after he was involved in a traffic accident.

According to Sheriff’s office spokesperson, Major Phil Kasten, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Brown was traveling westbound along Route 140 approaching the intersection of Tyrone Road when his car collided with a 2006 Jeep Liberty operated by Deborah Elaine Donlan, aged 61 of Westminster.

Brown was not responding to a police call for at the time, but traveling routinely with traffic.

Kasten reports that according to witness statements, Donlan failed to yield to oncoming traffic as she turned the Jeep from southbound Tyrone Road onto eastbound Route 140, crossing in front of the deputy’s car.

Brown was also taken to the hospital.  He “suffered some minor lacerations to his face and burns to his hand from the air bag.  He’s been treated and released,” said Kasten early this evening in a phone interview with the Carroll Eagle.

“Dolan was taken to Carroll Hospital Center with chest pains.  She was treated and released,” said Kasten.

Traffic investigators from the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the collision.  Charges are pending the outcome of that investigation.

Carroll County Sheriff's Office: “Strikeforce nabs Intoxicated Drivers during first weekend of patrols”

Strikeforce nabs Intoxicated Drivers during first weekend of patrols”

Effort part of State’s goal “Toward Zero Deaths” in August

Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, August 9, 2010 ---- In an effort to reduce the fatalities caused by impaired driving, Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputies began a month long intensive enforcement initiative this weekend, stopping 148 motorists along Carroll roadways for motor vehicle law violations, seven of which resulted in the arrest of impaired drivers. Additional arrests included three suspended drivers, and one motorist who was in possession of personal use quantities of marijuana and associated paraphernalia.

Last year alcohol and drug use were a factor in twenty-nine percent (29%) of fatal collisions in Maryland in spite of law enforcement arresting more than 24,000 impaired drivers. Maryland’s alcohol limit is .08, which can be reached by consuming as little as one drink over a one-hour period. For those under age 21, Maryland’s zero tolerance law requires the arrest for the presence of any alcohol. Through strategic enforcement efforts and promoting awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will work toward reducing the number of alcohol and drug related traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Each weekend during the month of August, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will join forces with the Maryland office of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and allied law enforcement agencies as part of the “Checkpoint Strikeforce” campaign. The Deputies primary objective will be enforcing those violations indicative of impaired driving while using the opportunity to heighten public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and send a clear message to violators that impaired driving will not be tolerated.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to drink responsibly, and reminds motorists to designate a sober driver before consuming any alcohol, call a taxi or other public transportation, and don’t let others who are impaired take to the road.
