Westminster Patch by Kevin Dayhoff, November 25, 2013 – December 14, 2013

Sadly, for folks who have suffered a personal loss in recent years, the holidays can also be a difficult time and leave friends and family starring down a long vacant hallway (Kevin Dayhoff, October 16, 2010)
This past week marked the beginning of the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays. It is a time to celebrate the past year with our friends and family and look forward to new beginnings.

If you are feeling blue for the holidaze – reach-out for help. You might be surprised to find-out how many friends will go out on a limb to help - know the way out… Just saying. (Kevin Dayhoff, January 8, 2013 in Crete.)
However, sadly the holidays can also be a difficult time for folks who have suffered a personal loss in recent years. Especially if that personal loss occurred in the past year…

Remember Jesus is the reason for the season. And everything happens for a reason… (Kevin Dayhoff, January 8, 2013 at Suda Bay Cemetery in Crete, Greece.)
Fortunately there are many resources in the community that are available to help cope. Although Carroll Hospice has already had a “coping with the holidays” workshop, many local churches have a “Blue Christmas” service including Taylorsville United Methodist Church. (And of course, there is always “Retail Therapy - All signs point to shopping locally in Carroll County this Christmas season.”)

If you are feeling blue for the holidays, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn how many of your friends care for you and are willing to lend a hand. Don’t row this boat alone. (Kevin Dayhoff, June 8, 2013)
The service at Taylorsville will take place on December 19, 2013 at 7 p.m. at 4356 Ridge Road, Mt Airy, MD 21771.

Pastor Sarah B. Dorrance serves as the pastor at Taylorsville and writes, Blue Christmas “is a time to be celebrating the birth of our Savior even in the midst of changed circumstances that might be hard for us. It is a time to remember that Jesus changes everything, even the hurts and the pains we might be experiencing today, and the birth of our Lord is something special to be celebrated.”

May 22, 1991 Baltimore Sun: Pleasant Valley St. Matthew's Members Join Together On Pentecost

Union Church Congregations Make It Official With Merger

St. Matthew's Members Join Together On Pentecost

May 22, 1991|By Amy L. Miller | Amy L. Miller, Staff writer

PLEASANT VALLEY — Two congregations sharing one building celebrated the birthday of the Christian church by merging to create one unified church.

Members of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church transferred their names to the rolls of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ during a unification service on Sunday.

"Sunday the 19th was chosen because it's Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church," said the Rev. Charles Stanfield, pastor of St. Matthew's.

The two denominations of St. Matthew's had been a union church -- or congregations sharing the same building -- for more than 100 years, he said.

Although preparations for the formal merger began in January, members of both congregations had been considering the move for some years, said member Donna Geiman.

"The first time it shows up in the church notes is about 12 or 15 years ago, but the time wasn't right," she said. "Things have to come at the right time."

However, the idea came up for serious consideration when St. Matthew's Lutheran's minister -- the Rev. Paul A. Haack -- left the church to pastor the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Oxford, Pa.

The Rev. Adam Fisher pastored St. Matthew's Lutheran until the end of December. Read more: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1991-05-22/news/9113005480_1_matthew-lutheran-union-church-matthew-united-church

County's Seven Black Churches Small in Size, Large In Dedication

Black History Month February 1991 -- A Look at Carroll's Black Community

February 13, 1991|By Jane Lippy | Jane Lippy, Contributing writer

With 440 members led by four pastors, Carroll's seven black churches don't necessarily constitute a spiritual army.

But the congregations have been working to face the challenge of accomplishing as much as they can with the people power they have.
And the churches have their share of energetic members.

The Rev. Joan Carter serves as a suitable example of how the churches must get the most out of their resources.

The 32-year-old Carter is pastor of three churches: Union Street United Methodist Church in Westminster, Strawbridge United Methodist on Route 31 near New Windsor and Fairview United Methodist on Liberty Road in New Windsor.

Carter's busy Sundays begin at 9 a.m., when she meets Fairview's 30-member congregation before preaching. At 10:15, lay ministers start the service at Strawbridge, while Carter arrives 30 minutes later and addresses the 75 members until about 11:30.

Then, it's on to the 75-member congregation at Union Street. Members begin the service and Carter greets them at the conclusion of her message. Read more; http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1991-02-13/news/9113001502_1_two-churches-carter-black-churches

Carroll Is Remembered As The Cradle Of Methodism

May 05, 1991

Although members of many religions organized churches in Carroll, and congregations of all varieties continue to meet, the county is remembered as the cradle of American Methodism.

Robert Strawbridge, an Irish-born farmer turned preacher, was the first man to preach Wesleyan Methodism in America.

Converted to the faith in his home community of Drumsna, in County Leitrim, he began his ministry in Ireland. But, in about 1760, he and his wife, Elizabeth, emigrated to the United States, where he settled on Sam's Creek, in Frederick County.

Shortly after his arrival, he began preaching to his neighbors in his home, which he later purchased along with 50 acres from John England for 50 pounds. The home was declared a shrine in 1940 by the General Conference of the Methodist Church. As soon as Strawbridge had established himself as a farmer-preacher, he began expanding his ministry to include Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Strawbridge's ministry included many firsts. He organized the first Methodist meeting in America, in about 1763.The first Methodist meeting house in America, a log building, was built 1764 in a large field near the tributaries of Sam's Creek and Pipe Creek. The original building was eventually destroyed, and a replica of it was erected at the Strawbridge Shrine near New Windsor.

Crossing the Creek, A Practical Guide to the Dying Process

“Crossing the Creek” is written by Michael Homes

http://www.slideshare.net/kevindayhoff/20000904-crossing-creek

I received “Crossing the Creek, A Practical Guide to the Dying Process” on the last day, November 13, 2013, of Bereavement Skills Training at Carroll Hospice.

I recently took a 15-hour class in Bereavement Skills Training at Carroll Hospice, http://www.carrollhospice.org/Bereavement-Skills-Training taught by Kathleen A. Bare, M.S. Bereavement Counselor, Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.

The topics included an introduction to Carroll Hospice and the services and functions hospice can provide when family members, loved-ones, friends and colleagues are “Crossing the Creek.”

The class touched-upon the medical aspects of the dying experience and advice for caregivers. Class segments included ‘normal grief,’ natural grief responses, children and grief. Complicated grief, suicides, communication skills, rituals, support groups and resources.

On the last day of class, a member of the class distributed a photocopy of the publication, “Crossing the Creek, A Practical Guide to the Dying Process,” which the author, Michael Homes, RN, identifies as “A nurse’s perspective on the medical aspects of the dying experience and advice for caregivers.” My copy of “Crossing the Creek” is branded with a ‘print date’ of September 4, 2000.

According to http://crossingthecreek.com/, the publication is no longer available. Furthermore, the publisher, Damone-Rose Publishing is going out of business. A brief search of the internet did not locate a place where the book could be purchased. This information was accessed on November 25, 2013.

That is a shame because it is a valuable and well accepted plain-language and common sense approach to the dying experience and advice to caregivers…

In his introduction to “Crossing the Creek,” Mr. Holmes writes:

“This guide is intended to provide dying people and their caregivers with a general description of what they can expect to encounter. While understanding does not eliminate the impact of experience, it can: certainly reduce some of the consternation and allay that creeping sense of panic•.

“All transitions have similar key elements. Also, every person experiences, a wide variety of transitions during the course of his/her lifetime. In that sense, there is nothing new in dying process. In fact, each of us develops our own, personal style for dealing with transitions. We tend to stick with that style, whatever it might be, when we face the transition we call death.

“If you would like to know how you will handle your own death, look back upon your life and observe how you have handled all your other transitions. Unless you decide to change your approach, that is how you will die.

While all transitions have similar key elements, this guide deals specifically with the transition of dying. Every person does not experience every sign or symptom described herein, or a person may experience a particular sign or symptom in his/her own unique way. There is room for infinite variation in how any given individual may experience the dying process. At the same time, certain general themes are common to all.

“It is well to remember that all transitions entail some disagreeable or uncomfortable aspects. Dying process is no exception. No reasonable person expects that life will contain no discomforts, yet some espouse the notion that somehow, death will. This is not a reasonable expectation. The dying process has its difficult aspects regardless of one's level of enlightenment.

“Modern medicine has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for mitigating or even eliminating many disagreeable aspects of physical death. At the same time, modern medicine cannot relieve people of responsibility for their own lives. We all prepare for our own death by the manner in which we live our lives. Skilled clinicians can be a great help, but we each bear the ultimate burden of responsibility for how we live and how we die…”

For more information on grief, bereavement, death and dying, or coping with death at the holidays and the various programs offered by Carroll Hospice, contact: Kathleen A. Bare, M.S. Bereavement Counselor, Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157, 410-871-7231, KBare@carrollhospitalcenter.org; or go to: http://www.carrollhospice.org/home.

Kevin Dayhoff is a chaplain with the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department and the Maryland Troopers Association Lodge # 20.

In addition he currently serves on the executive board of the Carroll Co. branch of the NAACP and the church council of Grace Lutheran Church.

In the past, he has taken a number of classes in various aspects of the chaplaincy, including non-violence training, emergency incident command and response, Red Cross disaster response training, and a Federation of Fire Chaplains’ class in the Essentials of Fire Chaplaincy…

Is there Grace Without Faith?

I got to thinking about this question while reading Paul’s letter to the Ephesians this morning. I try not to let my mind wander while reading the Bible, but sometimes a little thought will briefly take me somewhere else. For me, a good place to start is with grace. What is it? I’ve heard it...
