Flyer, information and entry form for the Easter 5K Run to the Cross April 19, 2014 at Taylorsville United Methodist Church

Flyer, information and entry form for the Easter 5K Run to the Cross April 19, 2014 at Taylorsville United Methodist Church

According to information from the Taylorsville United Methodist Church website, the first ever ‘Run to the Cross’ will take place this Saturday in Taylorsville, Carroll County, Maryland.

If you are looking to get outside after a long-cold winter of being cooped-up inside, this is a great family event for everyone to enjoy – and celebrate spring and Easter. And oh, was it mentioned that there will also be great food available - pulled pork sandwiches. And all the proceeds go to several good causes…

The 5 K run will go from South Carroll High School to Taylorsville United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. (TUMC). (You can run this or walk this 5 K.)

This 5 K run will travel west on Route 26, cross Route 27 (with State Police help) and travel south on Route 27 to TUMC.

At the end of the race enjoy live music, pulled pork sandwiches (free for runners) and the final awards ceremony.

This run is a joint venture brought to you by TUMC and SCHS’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. (FCA)

Proceeds will be given to both the FCA and the No More Malaria Campaign. (Every 60 seconds a child dies in Africa of Malaria. This campaign has already cut that number in half, we want to stop deaths from malaria.) Your entry fee will be tax deductible.

There are two ways to register: One is to download the run entry form, fill it out, and mail it back to TUMC along with a check. Please register by April 6th. The registration fee is $10 for students; $15 for SCHS Alum; and $20 for adults.

The second way to register is to click below. Make sure you have a credit card ready and you can register totally on line.

Note there is a 2-4 dollar increase to offset on-line costs.

While many Christian congregations have activities or services scheduled for Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, Easter Saturday is often a quiet day that slips by before the celebrations on Easter Sunday.

But Taylorsville United Methodist Church is hoping to start a new Easter Saturday tradition with the “Run to the Cross” 5K race.

“The whole point is you’re running to the cross the day before Easter and looking to see it’s empty, and the next day you’re going to see that the tombstone is rolled away,” said the Rev. Sarah Dorrance, pastor of Taylorsville UMC. “It’s very specific, rain or shine, on Easter Saturday.”

Dorrance said she got the idea of the church hosting a 5K race while talking to colleagues from other parts of the country. Read more here: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/features/religion/running-to-the-cross/article_5a6ef6b4-c8c1-5fa0-a54d-5b161e2760f9.html

On November 15, 2013, Eldersburg Patch editor Susan Jenkins wrote, “A Maryland State Trooper who was injured in October during a traffic stop has inspired many to take action in the form of a recent 5K benefit and a stepped-up effort by police to increase awareness about the Move Over law.

“Trooper Jacqueline "Jackie" Kline was hit in Anne Arundel County on Oct. 6 as she assisted another trooper on a traffic stop on Route 100 in Pasadena.

“To raise money to help Kline with expenses related to her recovery, about 800 runners participated in the 5K for JK on Nov. 10 in Sykesville. In his blog post on Patch, Kevin E. Dayhoff included photos and wrote about participating in the event. Click here to see the blog and more photos from the 5K for JK...”

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

November 15, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff

Yesterday I took a look at running at the Westminster Cemetery on North Church Street in Westminster.

In addition to the trails I discussed here on October 22, 2013, http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/fall-is-great-for-running-trails-in-carroll-co?yPos=0; I’ve been wondering how many other walking-running trail opportunities in the Carroll County area I have overlooked.

I mean, I walked the blacktop trails at the cemetery marveling at how many times I had visited the historic cemetery and really never considered it as a walking - running trail.

I saw many other walkers and runners. I did not measure any courses. That will be my next step. Although it is in the middle of Westminster, it was amusingly - and amazingly quiet, bucolic and serene. I grabbed a cup of coffee at Birdie's, http://www.birdiescoffee.com/, and really enjoyed a moment or two to myself - in the middle of town. LOL

Meanwhile, I hope to see many of you at the Terry Burk Wakefield Valley Community Trail memorial dedication service and 5K run on Saturday morning, November 16, 2013. "Over the years the eight-foot wide paved Wakefield Trail, the city's first hiking and biking trail, has developed one leg at a time, inspired in part by the legacy of Burk, who ran with the Road Runners Club for many years. It's all about the roll when choosing running shoes - baltimoresun.com

Shoe roll in fitness - baltimoresun.com:

'via Blog this'

By Dorene Internicola Reuters
July 15, 2013
NEW YORK —
Fitness experts have long advised clients choosing a running shoe to forget fashion and consider the roll or pronation - the way the foot leans inward upon impact.

Analyzing the roll of the foot remains standard practice among fitness and medical professionals in the belief it will lead to a better shoe fit and fewer injuries... http://www.baltimoresun.com/health/newsletter/sns-rt-us-fitness-running-shoes-20130715,0,3826451.story
