Berkeley City Council Mandates Free Pot for the Poor | KQED News Fix

Berkeley City Council Mandates Free Pot for the Poor | KQED News Fix:

"Berkeley’s medical marijuana dispensaries must provide 2 percent of their cannabis free of charge to very low-income residents under a law passed unanimously by the City Council earlier this month.

Individual patients who make under $32,000, or families that earn less than $46,000, qualify for the complimentary cannabis. The law further requires that the free marijuana “be the same quality on average as medical cannabis that is dispensed to other members.”

Comcast 'Embarrassed' By The Service Call Making Internet Rounds by ELISE HU July 15, 2014

When a customer service call is described as "Kafkaesque" and "hellish," you pretty much know how it's going to go down before even taking a listen. But in case you haven't heard the condescending, tedious call that's lit up the Internet, here it is:
The recording starts after the call has already been in progress for about 10 minutes, according to the caption on SoundCloud by Ryan Block, who was trying to cancel his Comcast Internet service. Block writes:
"The representative (name redacted) continued aggressively repeating his questions, despite the answers given, to the point where my wife became so visibly upset she handed me the phone. ...  http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2014/07/15/331681041/comcast-embarrassed-by-the-service-call-making-internet-rounds?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20140720&utm_campaign=mostemailed&utm_term=nprnews

What is a photocopier? Public records humor? Yep ... watch this video | The Columbus Dispatch

Public records humor? Yep ... watch this video | The Columbus Dispatch: "By: Randy Ludlow
The Columbus Dispatch - April 28, 2014"

Hat Tip: Bryan Sears...

This is hilarious – and true. And, it involves public records, which typically aren't good for many laughs.
A Hollywood writer and movie director has created a new online feature for The New York Times in which he crafts a verbatim video around transcripts from court cases.
The debut video involves an Ohio Supreme Court case in which an incredulous lawyer (David Marburger of Cleveland in real life) questions a Cuyahoga County recorder’s office employee who refuses to concede he knows what a photocopier is. Hilarity ensues.
OMG - you simply must watch this here: http://www.dispatch.com/content/blogs/your-right-to-know/2014/04/photocopier-video.html

"The cost of a drink isn't what it used to be for a North Charleston man who was slapped with a $525 fine for refilling his 89-cent drink and now faces federal charges.

On-site construction worker Chris Lewis told WCSC News he didn't know refills at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston weren't free.

Suit seeks removal of Peace Cross at Bladensburg World War 1 Peace Memorial

I’m not making this up…

According to an article in the Washington Post on March 1, 2014 by wirter Michael E. Ruane, “The American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit last week in federal court in Maryland calling for the removal of Bladensburg’s 40-foot Memorial Peace Cross, which honors men from Prince George’s County who died during World War I.

“The association and three individual plaintiffs contend that the cross, which is on state property, violates the constitutional principle of separation of church and state. The cross was dedicated in 1925.

“The lawsuit states that the humanist association is an organization that advocates progressive values and equality for humanists, atheists, and freethinkers. One of the individual plaintiffs, Steven Lowe of Washington, contends that the cross “associates a Christian religious symbol with the state and gives the impression that the state supports and approves of Christianity, as opposed to other religions,” the suit says.”

Washington Post: Court papers escalate fight between key contractors on Md. health insurance exchange

Court papers escalate fight between key contractors on Md. health insurance exchange

By Jenna Johnson and Mary Pat Flaherty, Published: February 7, 2014

One of the two companies that built Maryland’s troubled online health insurance exchange charged in court papers Friday that the lead contractor “concealed its lack of relevant expertise” when it bid on the contract.

Escalating a bitter feud, EngagePoint alleged that Noridian Healthcare Solutions had no experience in developing the type of software the exchange would need. EngagePoint also said Noridian “lacked the expertise, resources and commitment actually required” to develop and operate the Web site through which Marylanders were supposed to sign up for insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act.

Noridian fired EngagePoint in October, and the two companies — which are suing each other in federal court in Baltimore — are fighting over employees, money and work that remains to be completed.

[….]

Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D), who was tasked with implementing health-care reform in Maryland, said top state officials became aware of potential problems in September but did not realize their gravity. Maryland’s exchange crashed Oct. 1, its first day, and has been plagued with problems that have made it difficult for Marylanders to sign up for health insurance.

[…]

The exchange is largely functioning through work-arounds, state health officials have said. Rather than signing up for insurance through the Web site, many Marylanders have contacted call centers and spent hours on the phone. Some applications are being processed on paper.

"FAIRBANKS, ALASKA — A New Year's tradition has left residents in one Interior Alaska community off the grid.

The traditional way to ring in the new year is to shoot off guns at midnight on Jan. 1 in Tanana, a community of about 250 residents 150 miles west of Fairbanks.

But this year, one or more revelers with .410-gauge shotguns shot out one of the town's main fiber-optic cable lines." ... Read more: http://www.adn.com/2014/01/10/3266863/new-years-revelers-destroy-tanana.html#emlnl=Morning_Newsletter

How To Fix The "You need permission to perform this action." Error On Windows

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC3jHe3IYXQ

The "You need permission to perform this action" error message in the Microsoft Windows 7 and 8 operating systems is a horrible-horrible problem.

One wonders why Microsoft does not fix it? Folders and files of which I had routine and easy access in the past are often and unexpectedly unavailable to me now that I am using Windows 7. It is totally nuts...

Attorney General Gansler to Sue Carroll Co Md Over Implementation of "Rain Tax"

Attorney General Gansler to Sue Carroll County
Legal Action Threatened Over Implementation of "Rain Tax"
Marylanders for Joe GettyNovember 14, 2013

Attorney General Douglas Gansler has threatened to sue the County Commissioners of Carroll County for their failure to implement the so-called "rain tax" passed by the Maryland General Assembly in 2012.

Gansler is also one of three Democrat candidates for Governor of Maryland in the June 24, 2014, primary election.

In a letter to the County Commissioners, the Attorney General's office threatens enforcement by "injunctive relief in a civil action or issue an order requiring the County to take corrective actions."  The enforcement action also could subject Carroll County to "civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each day of violation." (The entire letter from Assistant Attorney General Paul N. De Santis is posted on the website of the Carroll County Times click here.)

The threat of fines and legal action has also been covered by national organizations that research tax policy. The following commentary appeared in the blog American Legislator (for full article, click here):

"Maryland is no stranger to tax increases. In fact, since Governor O'Malley took office in 2007, there have been 40 tax, fee, and toll increases. The rain tax is another burden to add to the list. Given Maryland's dismal economic outlook rank of 35th in Rich States, Poor States, the Governor and legislators would be wise to re-think this destructive tax-and-spend approach to policymaking."

Got my #CarrollCo #MD property #tax in mail yesterday #Unbelievable It took my breath away When are all the taxes going 2 get under control?

December 1, 2009

I did this piece in September 1994.  The more things change the more they stay the same.  At some point, the entire manner in which local government in Maryland is funded needs to be changed so that all our tax revenue does not get lost in a black hole in Annapolis and gets re-directed to the government that is closest to the citizens.

Breitbart: Carroll County Maryland Tea Party accused of violence

Breitbart: Carroll County Maryland Tea Party accused of violence

Democrats in
Maryland accused local Tea Partiers of having “violent tendencies

I went to Commissioner Haven Shoemaker's announcement today at the library, in spite of my concern that there would be violence. I'm just saying... http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/06/22/Tea-Party-Group-Banned-from-Town-Hall-Because-of-Maryland-Democrats-Smear

This is far beyond sad. I have my criticisms of the Tea Party folks and of the local Democrats - but I must say that fear of violence has never been a concern. I have witnessed Liberals trash places where they have held rallies. I have never worried about violence. I have worried about sheer nonsense out of both camps... I have never worried about violence from either the liberals or the conservatives in our community.

The only time I have ever worried about violence came from card-carrying Democrats when I worked for Civil Rights in the south in the early 1970s. I'm just saying...

TEA PARTY GROUP BANNED FROM TOWN HALL BECAUSE OF MARYLAND DEMOCRATS' SMEAR by MATTHEW BOYLE 22 Jun 2013 http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/06/22/Tea-Party-Group-Banned-from-Town-Hall-Because-of-Maryland-Democrats-Smear

Democrats in Maryland accused local Tea Partiers of having “violent tendencies,” resulting in them being banned by local law enforcement from attending an upcoming town hall event with their Congressman, Breitbart News has learned.

Local Maryland bloggers at Front Line State broke the story on Saturday morning, noting that “Carroll County Maryland Democrats have reportedly attempted to use the Sheriff’s department to keep members of a local Tea Party activist group from attending a ‘meet and greet’ with their congressional representative, Chris Van Hollen, on Monday June 24 at Caroll County Community College (CCCC).”

Van Hollen is the ranking member of the House Budget Committee

Michelle Jefferson of We The People (WTP), a local Tea Party group in the area, told Front Line State that she had spoken with Major Tom Long of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department when she returned home on Wednesday after the “Audit The IRS” rally in Washington, D.C.

Long told her that Don West, the recording secretary for the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee, had contacted the Community College’s campus security, the State Police, and the county sheriff’s office asking that We The People be banned from attending Van Hollen’s upcoming town hall event. He claimed the Tea Party group engages in what he described as “violent tendencies.”

It was later discovered that West, the Democratic Party official, filed an “interim peace order” against WTP’s Jefferson. Read more http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/06/22/Tea-Party-Group-Banned-from-Town-Hall-Because-of-Maryland-Democrats-Smear

Federal employee union wants members to keep health plan rather than adopt Obamacare | The Patriots Network

Federal employee union wants members to keep health plan rather than adopt Obamacare | The Patriots Network:

The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) opposes legislation (H.R. 1780) that will push federal employees out of the FEHBP and into the insurance exchanges established under Obamacare. Ironic? If it isn’t good enough for the civil service, why is it good enough for the American public?

So who is the NTEU? Since 1938, NTEU has been driven by the principle that every federal employee should be treated with dignity and respect. In that time, NTEU has grown to represent some 150,000 bargaining unit employees in 31 federal agencies and departments... http://patriotsnetwork.wordpress.com/2013/05/21/federal-employee-union-wants-members-to-keep-health-plan-rather-than-adopt-obamacare/

News from The Hill: Woodward claims White House threatened him

News from The Hill:

Woodward claims White House threatened him
By Jonathan Easley

Bob Woodward said Wednesday that a “very senior person” at the White House told the veteran journalist and author “you will regret” faulting the Obama administration for the present fight over sequestration.
“It was said very clearly: 'you will regret doing this,'” Woodward said on CNN’s "The Situation Room." “I’m not going to say [who], a very senior person. It makes me very uncomfortable to have the White House telling reporters you’re going to regret doing something you believe in.”

Lance Armstrong and King Sisyphus by Kevin E. Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/cctpxp2

Lance Armstrong and King Sisyphus by Kevin E. Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/cctpxp2

August 29, 2012

Last Thursday, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency decided, without a single credible shred of evidence, that since professional cyclist Lance Armstrong did not prove himself to be innocent, he is guilty and could not have been successful in his storied career without the use of drugs.

Before Mr. Armstrong retired from professional cycling in February 2010, he had passed approximately 500 drug tests in his long, celebrated, and distinguished athletic career. It is believed that there has never-ever been a single positive test…

[…]

“There’s something very much of the feel of a witch hunt to this. If Armstrong was doping, then by God take away his awards and give him a medal for being the smartest damn athlete on the planet.”

… we live in an era where the purpose of government is to criminalize the successful. Whether you are successful in business, art, professional sports – or whatever, the basic tenant of government is that you simply must be guilty of something. The purpose of bureaucracy is to prove it.

Whether you are guilty or not is unimportant. For the government, what is critical is that you be accused. That’s all that is necessary. The media will take care of the rest – by suggestion, innuendo, and nefarious association.

Your job is to endeavor to prove that you are innocent. It is a task that makes the myth of Sisyphus look easy.

You remember Sisyphus. There are many interpretations and versions of the story – including my favorite, “The Myth of Sisyphus” by Albert Camus… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5314

JetBlue captain subdued after erratic behavior | Digg Topnews

JetBlue captain subdued after erratic behavior | Digg Topnews:

(AP/CBS) LAS VEGAS — Passengers onboard a JetBlue flight bound for Las Vegas on Tuesday tackled and restrained the plane's captain after he was locked out of the cockpit by crew members, screamed 'they're going to take us down' and ranted about al Qaeda and a possible bomb onboard, passengers said.
The captain of JetBlue Airways Flight 191 from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport had a "medical situation" and the co-pilot diverted the plane to land in Amarillo, Texas, around 10 a.m., the airline said. A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News that the captain in question was Clayton Osbon, a veteran pilot with JetBlue.
Passengers said the captain stormed out of the cockpit and started acting erratically and seemed disoriented. Tony Antolino, a 40-year-old executive for a security firm, said the captain walked to the back of the plane after crew members tried to calm him down. He then began yelling about an unspecified threat linked to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan... http://digg.com/newsbar/topnews/jetblue_captain_subdued_after_erratic_behavior

How Not to Attract Tourists - New York Times OP-ED

How Not to Attract Tourists
By MARK VANHOENACKER March 15, 2012 New York Times OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR

Finally, when travelers actually disembark, they are too often subjected to inaccurate lessons in American manners and common sense. Americans may be surprised by the conclusions of a 2006 survey by the U.S. Travel Association, which found that foreign travelers were more afraid of United States immigration officials than of terrorism or crime. They rated America’s borders by far the least welcoming in the world. Two-thirds feared being detained for “minor mistakes or misstatements.”… http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/16/opinion/the-unwelcome-mat.html?_r=1&nl=todaysheadlines&emc=tha212_20120316

++++++++++

AS Americans, we like to imagine our country as we think of ourselves: open-hearted and welcoming; efficient and practical; easygoing, above all. These values are the foundation of our culture, of an open economy fueled by ideas and immigration, and of our soft power — America’s ability to change the world simply because it is admired.

Whatever foreigners think of the American experiment, though, it’s unlikely the experience of crossing our border has made them think better of it.

Imagine that you’re the citizen of a prosperous, democratic ally like Britain, Spain or Japan, and you’d like to visit America. Before traveling, you must pay $14 to complete an online United States government form called ESTA, short for Electronic System for Travel Authorization.

ESTA asks for basic personal data, like your name and birth date. It also asks whether you are guilty of “moral turpitude,” whether you’re planning crimes or “immoral activities” and whether you suffer from “lymphogranuloma venereum” (don’t ask). If you’re involved in terrorism or genocide — and for some reason you’ve decided to take this opportunity to inform the United States government — there’s a box for that. And if you’re a spy — a particularly artless one — please let us know.

Naturally, no one with anything to hide will answer honestly. Such purposeless questions recall Thoreau — “I saw that the State was half-witted” — and should astonish Americans, who know better than their government how to welcome guests.
