Inaugural gay pride event planned for Westminster on July 7^th, 2018 By Kevin Dayhoff

Westminster, Md. June 4, 2018 - - After months of meetings and preparations, a group of Carroll County citizens have formed to develop plans to hold an inaugural gay pride event, The Westminster Pride Festival, in Westminster. The newly formed Westminster Pride Planning Committee is a consortium of civic, business, nonprofit, and church leaders who have joined together with community leaders and members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.

 

The planned event, The Westminster Pride Festival is believed to be the first of its kind in our community. It will take place on July 7, 2018 from noon to 5 p.m. in the 200 block of East Main Street, between Church and Court Streets. Permits for the event have been issued from the City of Westminster.

All proceeds from The Westminster Pride Festival will be donated to the Westminster Pride Festival Fund, which is a fund of the Community Foundation of Carroll County. The fund is the very first LGBTQ+ fund at the Community Foundation with a specific focus on the LGBTQ+ community.

According to information from the planning committee, The Westminster Pride Festival seeks to raise the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in Westminster and Carroll County. “It is time we showed our pride in our community,” said Jason Garber, who along with his husband Lance Garber have been planning this event with a core group of dedicated volunteers.

“We have made Westminster and Carroll County our home,” said Garber, a McDaniel graduate and former president of McDaniel chapter of Allies. “My husband and I enjoy living in this very close knit and accepting community, and we want to celebrate Pride Month with all the friends, family and allies we have.”

‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month’ - LGBT Pride Month is currently celebrated annually in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Inn civil unrest in New York City, otherwise known as the “Stonewall Riots,” that took place following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 43 Christopher Street, in Manhattan. In subsequent years, marches, parades, festivals, and events have been scheduled in the spring to shed additional light on the civil rights of the gay and lesbian community.

According to various media accounts, ever since the initial Christopher Street Liberation Day on June 28, 1970 marked the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the participants have encountered very little resistance from onlookers.

This year, in Carroll County, it was decided by the organizing committee that in order to be respectful of other Pride events that are taking place in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Frederick, MD, The Westminster Pride Festival wanted to kick off its inaugural year with no calendar conflicts. “People do generally celebrate pride with more than one festival, especially on the east coast where it is easy to make it to various pride parades and festivals.” said Garber.

Founding sponsors of The Westminster Pride Festival include Random House Penguin, MerMaids, and Birdie’s Café. The committee is made up of over twenty volunteers, who have dedicated many hours to ensure the success of this event.

The mission of the Westminster Pride Festival, according to the planning committee, is to assure the success of a yearly festival that includes information, support, music, art, food and overall acceptance and solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community, their allies and the Carroll County community.

According to the planning committee, The Westminster Pride Festival looks forward to creating a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community to express and affirm themselves, increase visibility and foster respect for those who want to express their own sexual and gender identity.

“We endeavor to make this a yearly event that will ultimately lead to scholarships for the education of LGBTQ+ students,” said Sherri Hosfeld-Joseph, owner of Birdie’s Café and founding member of the Westminster Pride Festival. “This is something our community is clearly longing for… We look forward to an outpouring of support from our community in support of our LGBTQ+ friends, family members and loved ones.”

Vendors will include local restaurants including Maggie’s, Bud’s at Silver Run, The Food Chick, Starry Night Bakery and many others.

Entertainment will be provided by local bands, Henry and the Big Sleazy, The Flying Faders, Brinjal Band, The Dune Flowers, Faceplant and DJ powerline.

Information on healthcare, counseling services, and resources for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies will be available as well.

Families are encouraged to attend with children to enjoy food, games, activities and a day full of information and affirmation. Merchandise commemorating the inaugural event will be for sale on the planning committee’s website as well as the day of the festival.

Westminster, MD - Carroll County Food Sunday has announced the return of the Farm to Table Brunch, a FUNdraising event to support CCFS's Veggie Voucher Program. The event will now be at the Westminster City Fire Department’s John Street Quarters, a climate-controlled venue with even more seating. 

The buffet brunch will feature dishes created by award-winning chef Melissa Fordham from Blue Bistro Restaurant. Each offering will be made with ingredients grown or baked by local Farmers’ Market producers. Even the centerpieces will be from a local farm, with Tierra Blooms crafting the floral arrangements.

There will be 2 seating's, 9 AM and 11:00 AM, featuring culinary treats including:

Assorted Gourmet Quiche

Fresh Corn Pancake with bacon marmalade

Parmesan Stewed Tomatoes

Gazpacho

Balsamic Zucchini Cous Cous

French Toast Casserole

According to its website, Carroll County Food Sunday “distributes a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package that is predicated on household size and is meant to last 3-4 days. It includes meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, breads, and milk. Over 400 families a week are served at our Westminster, Eldersburg, and Taneytown locations.

In an email interview, Frank Baylor, a past president of Food Sunday said that Food Sunday “started around 1982 from the trunk of Mr. Jollie's car and has grown to the point where 8,000 lbs. of food are distributed each week. 250 to 400 families are aided each week…”

“For the sake of human decency, feeding the poor and the hungry people of Carroll County must be a concern for all of us who are not hungry,” wrote Jollie, according to the Food Sunday website. “To know hunger exists and to do nothing is the shame and bane of human life.” Jollie encouraged the religious community to collect food at their Sunday services for distribution through a county wide food bank network that was appropriately incorporated as “Food Sunday.”

The operating budget for CCFS is “supported by community fund-raisers and direct mail solicitation of county residents. We are grateful for the churches, individuals, school groups, and service organizations that raise donations independently on our behalf, and for the local grocers that donate baked goods. Carroll County Government provides donated warehouse space in Westminster and utilities….

“Food drives and food donations are also very important in helping us maintain a reliable inventory of nutritional items year round. We are constantly purchasing food from a variety of sources based on price and availability. Our Food Bank Coordinator compares bulk prices at local merchants with those available from Maryland Food Bank, a large wholesaler in the Maryland Region. When possible, we take advantage of special deals to stock up on essential food supplies that can be held in reserve until needed.

Carroll County Food Sunday is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of representatives of all sectors of the community. Its daily operations are managed by two part-time employees – Dennis Fahey, Food Bank Administrator and Ed Leister, Executive Director.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

Just to shake things up a bit, Caroline, Grammy, and I had Popeyes carry-out for dinner on the 4^th of July. The place was very busy. Staff was very nice. We enjoyed our dinner. We will go back. There are several things I want to try on the menu. Caroline and I enjoy southern cooking – especially Louisiana – Cajun cooking.

I cannot remember the last time I went to Popeyes. Years ago, when I was in office, then-Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker used to have our executive strategy sessions at Popeyes 3694 in Westminster at the intersection of Rte 140 and Rte 97 – 624 Baltimore Blvd. 410-857-7550.

Although Popeyes has occupied the building for a long time, many years ago, it was the location of a savings and loan called Vermont Federal. Before then it was a service and gas station. I do not recall the name of the gas station.

The other night, Caroline and I were visiting with  friends Charles L Dorm Jr and Emily Willis-Dorm and he was reminiscing that there was a fire there a number of years ago that has to be one of the coldest fires the Westminster Fire Company ever fought. Along with the fire at the Shipley House at the corner of Main and Center Street. Caroline’s Dad always told stories about the fire at Hahn’s Grocery Store at the corner of Bishop Street and East Main Street. Apparently that was a cold fire also. I also think that former Westminster Police Chief Dean Brewer also recalls the fire at the location of Vermont Federal.

KED - What the article does not mention is that in part, one of the drivers for the precipitous increase in the cost of a ride to the emergency room is “ambulance abuse.” Folks who call an ambulance for unnecessary reasons. These are the folks who have a headache, a running nose or stub their toe and they are calling an ambulance. At the station we call them the “frequent fliers.” More often than not – “frequent fliers” do not pay their ambulance bills – read: the station goes uncompensated for the call; and these folks call a lot. So, who pays for ambulance abuse – we do. All of us do.

A Massachusetts woman is drawing attention for begging people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs after she was injured in a subway accident.

Video of the woman from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police (MBTA) Police Department went viral over the weekend. It shows her in apparent agony after her leg was caught in a gap between a train and the platform on Friday.

The 45-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, asked fellow passengers who came to her aid to not call the ambulance. “Do you know how much an ambulance costs?” the injured woman asked one passenger.

The story first picked up traction on Twitter when a Boston Globe reporter posted about the incident after witnessing the aftermath of the accident on Friday.

2nd Annual Carroll County Public Schools Cultural Expo

At our June 28, 2018 monthly Carroll County NAACP meeting member Terry Whye asked to have a flyer on the 2nd Annual Carroll County Public Schools Cultural Expo distributed to the membership.

I asked at the meeting if this was a continuation of the Carroll County Public Schools annual National Inclusive Schools Week program in which I participated. Terry said that the Cultural Expo was a different event.

In a recent email Terry reported that she asked Pamela A. Mesta, the CCPS Supervisor of ESOL/Nonpublic Liaison, for more information and that Ms. Mesta said that specific event is just in its second year.

Terry also reports that the predecessor was an annual event just for school teachers. Now, it is an event that is open to the public. You can register using the info at the bottom of the poster. No costs, no sign ups for the various presentations. First come, first seated until maximum capacity is reached for each room. We do not have to stay at our tables the whole time unless we want to. They encourage everyone enjoy the stage entertainment and programs.

On Wed., June 13, 2018 member Erin Snell, Carroll County Public Library Outreach Services, distributed an email to Carroll Citizens for Racial Equality friends, in which she reported “the 2nd Annual Culture Expo which will be held at Winters Mill High School again this year. Please consider attending this engaging event. This event is organized and hosted by the Carroll County Public School system. The public is invited to attend. Please see the registration information at the bottom of the flyer. Look for the Carroll Citizens for Racial Equality booth at the event! We hope to see you there!”

Westminster Pride Festival announces a fund at the Community Foundation of Carroll County

It was announced on May 11, 2018 that the Westminster Pride Festival is an official fund of the Community
Foundation of Carroll County.

It is “the very first fund at the Community Foundation in support of the LGBQT+ community,” according to a release by the Westminster Pride Festival.

According to a page for the fund on the Community Foundation website, “The Westminster Pride Festival Fund exists to assure the success of a yearly festival that includes information, support, music, art, food and overall acceptance and solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community, their allies, and the Carroll County community.

“The Westminster Pride Festival will create a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves, increase visibility and foster respect for those who want to express their own sexual and gender identity. We endeavor to make this a yearly event that will ultimately lead to scholarships for the education of LGBTQ+ students.”

2:45 p.m. Tuesday 26Je2018 - I just got back from the Westminster Elementary School polling place. The turnout has been light – but that polling place is usually really busy in the evening when folks are coming home from work…. We were in and out quickly. Well, after saying hi to my neighbors and friends. There is a time-honored tradition that voting in Westminster is a community get together. 

I interacted with all the campaign workers – whether I support their particular candidate or not. I had no negative experiences. Which I guess is good. I always have my cell phone camera and reporter’s notebook at the ready – but everyone was friendly and polite – and I applaud all of them for participating. 

I am always impressed with the election judges. They were very friendly, professional, capable, and competent. It is a long day and I thank them for their service. (I was a chief judge for 10-years – a long time ago, in the 1990s.)

Voting gives me goosebumps. We cannot take our right to vote for granted. I served in the Marines and have had good friends die defending that right. And I worked in the civil rights movement in the early 1970s. We simply cannot take our right to vote for granted.
