20061107 Dems Accuse Maryland GOP Of Dirty Tricks

Dems Accuse Maryland GOP Of Dirty Tricks

According to WBAL Radio: Dems Accuse Maryland GOP Of Dirty Tricks

And Jousting for Justice is well - - unhappy…

Crablaw is reporting Live…: Live from the Maryland Republican Party party…

Tuesday, November 07, 2006 WBAL Radio

The Maryland Democratic party says Michael Steele and Bob Ehrlich hit an all time low in American politics, accusing them of distributing misleading sample ballots that pretend Ehrlich-Steele are Democrats and that Jack Johnson and Kweisi Mfume endorsed both of them.

Party chairman Terry Lierman calls it "shameless fraud."

Shareese DeLeaver, a spokesperson for the Ehrlich campaign told the Washington Post the flier was intended to convey Ehrlich's support for Johnson, not the other way around.

"Given the county executive's tight race in the primary, it's unfortunate that he does not appreciate the campaign's expression of support for his reelection bid," she said.

The Democrats also allege Steele's campaign hired buses to pick up workers at homeless shelters in Philadelphia and ship them to Maryland. The party press release included a link to a video posted on the internet, alleged to be a video of a poll worker who came from Philadelphia and who said that he met Michael Steele last night.

An article in the Gazette newspaper quotes two of the men, Gary Swimpson and Leon Watson, as saying the Steele campaign came to their homeless shelter in Philadelphia in the wee hours of Tuesday, offering $100, donuts and coffee for anyone willing to work the polls on Election Day.

I guess we will need to keep checking with WBAL for updates…

20061107 Anecdotally Turnout in Carroll Is Good

Anecdotally - - Turnout in Carroll County Is Good

I just got an e-mail from an observer in the field…

Anecdotal Turnout in Carroll Is Good – Looking for Better by 8 p.m.

Carroll County does not produce rolling county-wide turnout figures but our roving pollworker, Delegate Nancy Stocksdale, is reporting strong mid-day turnout numbers (Mechanicsville precinct 4-4: 37%; Mechanicsville precinct 4-5: 40%; Robert Moton precinct 7-8: 34%).

This is in comparison to overall Baltimore City turnout of 26%, Frederick County at 30% and Queen Anne’s County at 35%.

20061107 Breaking News

Breaking News

November 7th, 2006

We interrupt the national mid-term elections for the following breaking news.

Please take a seat as I’m sure you will find the following information shattering. Shattering.

World crises such as Iraq - - or North Korea and Iran going nuclear, will just have to wait.

According to MSNBC Breaking News, family values advocate Britney Spears –Well NOT!

Ah - Ms. Spears has reportedly filed for divorce from Kevin Federline.”

And of course, no pun is intended, but I guess she’s now “on the market.” So appropriate that she’s hanging in the market, since she reinvented the objectification of women.

I’m sure the announcement was put-off until the stock market closed. No word yet as to whether the market will open tomorrow.

And no word from the president as this tragic event unfolds.

Unconfirmed reports are that Howard Dean has blamed the breakup of the marriage on President Bush and the Republicans and that it is intended to discourage voter turn-out. Word is that many Democrats are disconsolate over the news and refused to go to the polls in order to watch Katie Couric for guidance at this difficult time.

Where’s Kofi Annan when we need him? Or maybe Dr. Phil?

Actually, as I sob uncontrollably and my fingers can barely navigate the keyboard, I’m not sure what to think. I’m just trying to do my patriotic duty to call this terrible event to your attention, so that you may be informed.

What’s that? Oh, my radio is now playing somber martial music at the moment. Our great nation has been thrown into a deep depression as it tries to come to grips with this terrible terrible terrible blow to our sense of who we are and what we want to be and what are we going to have for dinner.

That’s it - - comfort food. Let’s see cottage cheese? No – yogurt? I know ice cream. That’s it - - when the going gets tough, the tough reach for ice cream.

I’m sure the announcement was timed so that we may all tune in to Katie Couric so that she may tell us how we really feel - - and to comfort us in our time of grief and need and sorrow.

According to the web site, TMZ… Oh, like I really go there every day. NOT.

“Spears filed legal papers today in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’”

“Her petition asks for legal and physical custody of their two kids, one-year-old Sean Preston and two-month-old Jayden James. Spears gives the date of separation as yesterday, the same day she showed off her post-pregnancy body during a surprise appearance on ‘Late Show with David Letterman.’”

Oh yeah, like I watch Letterman - - NOT.

Go out now and lower your flags.

Okay – moving on here. I’ll think I’ll go take a nap. Wake me up when this crisis is over or until Katie Couric comes on – so that I may be informed as to how and what to think.

And – who do I sue to get the last 15 minutes of my life back?

20061107 Pray for my wife

Pray for my wife

November 7th, 2006

I enjoyed Soccer Dad’s post about Dan Gainor’s piece on blogging in Maryland. You can find it here. To refresh your memory, my post is here.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to the fearless leader of the Maryland Blogger Alliance, Attila at the Pillage Idiot.

And yes, Ms. Dray, I agree with you about the title of the piece. If Mr. Gainor’s experience is anything like mine, even though I have a fabulous working relationship with my editors, I have essentially never had any input on the titles to my columns or articles. Editors jealously guard that dominion.

But I gotta tell ya, Mr. Gainor put one heckuva lot of work into what is the most definitive piece yet on blogging in Maryland. Thanks.

Yes folks; the number one rule of blogging is to have an understanding spouse. It goes along with the same joke about artists: whadda ya call an unmarried 50 year-old artist? Homeless.

I am fortunately married to one of the neatest women on the planet. (Sorry Mr. Modjesky.) Not only is she waaaay cool and understanding, but she actually has a job - - and she does small engine repairs. Thank Gawd!

Now I am going to go out and gleefully cancel out Ms. Dray’s votes.

20061030 Appearance on the Mark Steiner Show

Monday, October 30th, 20006 appearance on WYPR’s the Mark Steiner Show
with UMBC Professor Tom Schaller

Finally posted Thursday, November 7th, 2006. Sometimes my life is not my own…

To listen to the audio of the October 30th, 2006 appearance, go here. (If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can bring it up in another tab and keep working with the show playing …)

Pictured above is Dr. Schaller doing a stand-up after the show, outside of the WYPR building on Charles Street.

On Monday, October 30th, 2006, I had the pleasure to appear on WYPR’s “The Mark Steiner Show” with UMBC Professor Tom Schaller for a discussion of the upcoming Maryland elections. Mr. Steiner is certainly an accomplished veteran and come to find out, so is Dr. Schaller.

Thomas F. Schaller, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

The show came on the heals of a column Dr. Schaller had just penned in The Examiner, on October 27th, 2006, “Will Ehrlich see first defeat of his political career?”

I keep running across Crablaw’s post: “Kevin Dayhoff on WYPR Marc Steiner show,” that reminds me that I haven’t posted about the show. You might say, that for several days, Crablaw has played the role of my “electronic wife.”

Crablaw, we will look forward to your analysis of the program. Hopefully you draw the same conclusion as I did, that the Schaller-Dayhoff show actually furthered intelligent conversation about the current state of pre-election politics in Maryland.

WYPR billed it on their web site as: “We're less than two weeks away from the elections which means the political ads are getting nastier and the papers are endorsing candidates. Marc and his guests UMBC Professor Tom Schaller and Political writer Kevin Dayhoff will discuss the political campaigns and strategies of candidates running for office in Maryland.”

Oh – the music was great: Music break one: "National Seven" by Wizz Jones
Music break two: "Reminiscing at the Blue Note" by Earl Hines.

Although I have done radio before; (once for a very brief appearance on WBAL after “Who is Max Cleland?and with Stu Kerr's radio talk show, "The Garden Club", on WCBM several times in 1989 and 1990 - - ages ago, in a previous life as a horticultural expert… I haven’t done it for awhile and was worried that I would be rusty. Oh yeah, I did plenty of radio and “stand-ups,” when I was mayor of Westminster

Mark Steiner and Dr. Schaller - -and the production assistant, Marcus Charleston, made it easy…

To state the obvious, radio is very different from writing columns. With columns, you can write and re-write and re-write a sentence over and over again until it is (hopefully) just right. Not so with radio. Once it comes out of your mouth, that’s it. Bam!

Oh, Dr. Schaller has a book out – you can find it here: Dr. Tom Schaller’s Book, Whistling Past Dixie: How Democrats Can Win Without the South on Amazon.com.

The Denver Post did a good question and answer on October 24th, 2006 about his book, in their series - - Washington and the West . It can be found here: Q&A: Author Tom Schaller on why Democrats should forget about the South

Like I said, Mark Steiner and Dr. Tom Schaller made the show easy. And I can’t wait to do it again.

Please enjoy the show.

20061107 LG candidate Krix Cox will be visiting Carroll County on election day

Lt. Governor candidate Krix Cox will be visiting Carroll County on election day

November 7th, 2006

I have received word that Lt. Governor candidate Krix Cox will be visiting Carroll County on election day. If you are anywhere near Winfield on Tuesday, November 7th, 2006, don’t miss this opportunity to met an amazing person.

I have had the pleasure of meeting her before: “20061016 Secretary Kris Cox to visit Carroll County.”

The e-mail I received read:

Lt. Governor Candidate Kris Cox to Work Polls with Delegate Elliott:

As Secretary Kris Cox crisscrosses (a new tongue-twister – say that fast five times) the state on Election Day, she will stop in Carroll County to work a precinct with Delegate Don Elliott.

She expects to be at Winfield Elementary School (4401 Salem Bottom Road) at about 10:30 a.m. today and stay for one-half hour.

If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and say hello to our great candidate.

First Lady Kendel Ehrlich Visits Westminster

November 7th, 2006

First Lady Kendel Ehrlich Visits English American Tailoring and Main Street Businesses

Burning the midnight oil, a little while ago, I received this e-mail update on the travels of First Lady Kendel Ehrlich:

First Lady Kendel Ehrlich met employees at English American Tailors yesterday during a change in lunch shifts and also toured the impressive plant of the #1 custom tailoring company in the world.

The employees appreciated her visit and enjoyed sharing their work experiences with the First Lady, Senator Larry Haines and Delegate Tanya Shewell.

At the Republican HQs, they were joined by Senator David Brinkley and a number of candidates and central committee members including former Delegate Carmen Amedori, Commissioner candidate Mike Zimmer, Central Committee members Diana Jones, Donald Hoffman and Jim Reter, and Carroll Ehrlich coordinator Doug Howard.

After a short rally to victory, the First Lady stood at the large Republican campaign signs on the vacant lot for photographs.

The two workers at the Democratic HQs took the opportunity to come out and introduce themselves to the First Lady.

She completed her visit to Westminster with stop-bys at Coffey Music, Westminster Cigar Company, Giulianova Groceria, Locust Books and Cal Bloom’s Barbershop.

We concluded the festivities with a birthday wish (wonder what it was) and cake for Diana Jones.

A last minute reading list for political junkies

A colleague of mine has passed along the following last-minute reading list for peripatetic political junkies in need of a fix. Me, I’m in full metal Maalox mode.

Happy reading. Remember to breathe - - put the coffee down and eat something. Whichever side of the aisle you reside, we need you after the election to help figure all this out.
