Jackson's death created a wave of empathy in Westminster

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted on http://www.explorecarroll.com/ 7/19/09

Photo credit: Daguerreotype of Andrew Jackson, possibly taken by Edward Anthony, April, 1845

It's been hard to make sense of the media frenzy over the death of the enormously talented Michael Jackson. Although I greatly admired his talent; I mourned more for his tragic life, which appears to have precipitated his death.

Of course, for someone like myself, the timing of his death prompted recollections that on July 19, 1845, Westminster paused to mourn the death of another famous Jackson: President Andrew Jackson.

Many folks may know him better as the guy on the $20 bill, but he was the seventh president of the United States, and served from 1829 to 1837.

Jackson died June 8, 1845 at age 78. According to "The Complete Book of U.S. Presidents," by William A. DeGregorio, his last days "were spent in great discomfort, eased only slightly by opiates. Chronic tuberculosis left him with one functioning lung, and that one was impaired. His right eye went blind from a cataract. Dropsy puffed his features. Diarrhea sapped his strength." At one point on the morning of June 8, he had lapsed into unconsciousness, "although a touch of brandy revived him."

Aunt Betty fishing, 91, fishing underneath the Washington Baum Bridge on Roanoke Island

Aunt Betty fishing

July 22, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff (Click here for a larger image.)

Aunt Betty, 91, is shown here fishing underneath the Washington Baum Bridge on Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

Aunty Betty Judd, Chaperon Emeritus, who is also known as “sis,” “Mom,” or simply “AB;” shared that when she was young she has fond memories of going fishing in a stream with stick, string and a safety pin. She further elaborated that she once caught a fish that was so small that “not even the cat would eat it.”

Aunt Betty is well known for her fishing prowess. Over the years, she has been reported to have fished throughout the great American West; near Seattle Washington State on the west coast with Bobbi and Tedd; and throughout the east coast. As this report goes to press, it is not known if she had also taken the opportunity to go fishing in Alaska with family members.

Aunt Betty appeared to be enjoying herself, while she is reportedly vacationing with family on the Outer Banks - away from the usual hordes of roving reporters and their vapid questions.

Perhaps more importantly she seems to have escaped the flock of omnipresent paparazzi, which is always nearby shouting questions with the accompanying cacophony of clicking shutters.

After this reporter approached her with a few questions, she was whisked away to an awaiting van by an entourage of folks who appeared to have gone parasailing. Questions as to whether Aunt Betty also went parasailing were left unanswered and floating with the seagulls as she responded with a simple, enigmatic “Oh, whatever.”

It was overheard that Aunt Betty wanted to get back to her spacious palatial resort house by the beach, with its own zip code, and prop up her feet and have a Guinness and watch the Tour de France.

If you will recall, rumors continue to link Aunt Betty as a former love-interest of Lance Armstrong.

A hulking young man with fishing tackle and cigar dangling from his mouth, stood by patiently, as she gathered herself together. It is not known if he had accompanied her to the popular fishing spot underneath the Washington Baum Bridge or not.

No word as to how much luck she had today, but she was all smiles when this picture was snapped.

Kevin Dayhoff filed this report from the field.

Democratic Advocate, June 22, 1945 - Sugar To Affect Coca-Cola Supply

This day in history:
Democratic Advocate, June 22, 1945 - Sugar To Affect Coca-Cola Supply - W. C. Meredith, President Of Coca-Cola Co., Announces The Quality Will Be Maintained - The supply of Coca-Cola in Westminster definitely will be affected by the further curtailment in the supply of sugar after July 1st because the manufacturer of that popular drink will not compromise with the use of substitutes.

However, an equitable system of rationing will be maintained in Westminster during the shortage, according to W. C. Meredith. President of the Westminster Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

The O. P. A. announced that the allotment of sugar to industrial users would be cut to 50% of the sugar used in the third quarter of 1941, effective July 1st.

"I am informed that this sugar shortage is world-wide and not merely national and is directly attributed to the confusion in the production and distribution of sugar occasioned by the war," said Mr. Meredith.

"Sugar is absolutely necessary in the manufacture of Coca-Cola. We cannot and will not use sweetening substitutes, and therefore when sugar is short, there must be a shortage in the amount of Coca-Cola, but you can be certain that the quality of Coca-Cola will remain unchanged.

The Tentacle: “Who brought the canards to this party?” Farrell Keough

Who brought the canards to this party?” Farrell Keough July 21, 2009

http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3273

Many of us have known people who married the person involved in the break up of their marriage. We have also seen this situation in which one or the other in this new marriage cheats again. It is a difficult situation, but one with which a person has to wonder, why would you trust someone who has a known history of cheating or breaking vows?

Trust is a rare commodity and one which must not be broken as it is difficult, if not impossible, to regain. This situation seems to be playing out in the Maryland Republican Party. Dr. James Pelura III, the current chairman, is under significant fire from leaders within the party. This is neither a defense nor a condemnation of Dr. Pelura – that chain of events is taking place throughout newspaper articles, emails, and letters.

[…]

The first publicized warning of events to come took place on
July 8, 2009. In that news story it was disclosed that Dr. Pelura had fired an executive director and that was the only “fact” known…

[…]

Following the initial press release, further
sources spoke to other outlets. Perusing these hyperlinked newspaper articles, one will notice that a few names continue to appear. This is an odd situation for a group of elected officials whose interest should be in promotion of the party, not in its attenuation.

Boston.com: A exam of the history of American conservatism By Mickey Edwards

For more than half a century, historians, sociologists, journalists, psychologists, political scientists, and philosophers have studied, probed, analyzed, pondered, attacked, lauded, and attempted to explain that force that is American political conservatism. Sometimes this avalanche of books, articles, and op-eds has veered weirdly into the realms of psychobabble (once a group of left-leaning psychiatrists, without ever meeting or talking to him, diagnosed conservative Senator Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican nominee for president, as a megalomaniac); at other times books focused on relatively minor pieces of the conservative mosaic, creating straw men against whom they proceeded to rail. Occasionally, conservative insiders have attempted to put their own spin on defining what conservatism is, or at least what it once was.

Now comes Patrick Allitt. The accepted norm in academia is for praise of conservatism to be left to the practitioners while others, more “objective,’’ more “scholarly,’’ denounce conservatives as morally and intellectually inferior. That’s the game and them’s the rules.

CBS Discredits Steele and DeMint on ObamaCare as 'Harsh' and 'Incendiary

CBS Discredits Steele and DeMint on ObamaCare as 'Harsh' and 'Incendiary,' Couric Hails Kennedy

Tracking Liberal Media Bias Since 1996

1.
CBS Discredits Steele and DeMint on ObamaCare as 'Harsh' and 'Incendiary,' Couric Hails Kennedy

For the second weekday in a row, Katie Couric teased the CBS Evening News on Monday night by delivering President Obama's aggressive retorts to critics of his health plan as reporter Chip Reid pitched in to help, discrediting critics by disparaging their perspectives as "harsh" and "incendiary" attacks -- all before Couric caught up with ABC and NBC from the night before and promoted Ted Kennedy's "We're Almost There" Newsweek cover story. Couric teased: "The President takes on critics of his health care reform plan. He vows to move forward and says trying to fix a system that's breaking American families."

2.
Nets Skip Chappaquiddick's 40th; NPR Gets 'Ugly' Mail for Even Blogging About It

While the big liberal media usually find it hard to skip any news related to the Kennedy family, ABC, CBS and NBC breathed not a word about Saturday’s 40th anniversary of Chappaquiddick, and neither did the New York Times or Washington Post.

But it wasn’t a complete blackout. With Ted Kennedy on the cover of the July 27 Newsweek to push for government health care, editor Jon Meacham examined Chappaquiddick as a great flaw, and NPR Political Editor Ken Rudin blogged about the anniversary on Friday, only to be deluged with "ugly" mail from NPR readers upset he would mention Kennedy’s scandal when "what Bush and Cheney did was much worse."

3.
CBS Analyst: Taliban Treats Prisoners Better Than U.S.

In reaction to a propaganda video of the Taliban holding an American soldier hostage in Afghanistan, on Monday’s CBS Early Show, terrorism analyst Jere Van Dyk argued “What they [the Taliban] are saying is that ‘we can treat American soldiers, we can treat prisoners, better than Americans are treating them.’” Speaking to co-host Maggie Rodriguez about the capture of Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, Van Dyk continued to explain his observation “There’s a story in the New York Times this morning, also in the Wall Street Journal earlier, about prisoner abuse, Americans abusing prisoners in Afghanistan. What they [the Taliban] are saying to the -- to the Afghan public is that ‘we can do a better job, do not be afraid of us in the future’” Rodriguez accepted that premise and added: “Because he’s clean, the place looks like – he’s being fed. They’re taking care of him.” Van Dyk went on: “There’s a signal there. He’s wearing nice clothes, he’s being fed, he has a cup of tea there… what they are saying is that we will protect to the death ‘a guest in our home.’” He is in someone’s home right now.” He went on to predict: “My belief is, my hope of course is, and my cautious feeling is that he will be protected. He will not be harmed.”

4.
Dan Rather Hails Cronkite As 'Beacon' of 'Straight News'Chris Matthews, on Monday's Hardball, invited on Dan Rather to remember Walter Cronkite and the former CBS News anchor - famously fired for letting his bias spiral out of control during the George W. Bush National Guard story - called Cronkite "a straight news reporter," and claimed Cronkite advised him and others at CBS News to "Tell it straight without fear or favoritism. Pull no punches. Say it like it is, insofar as is humanly possible. Keep your own prejudices and biases and feelings and emotions out of it."

Great Victory for conservatives - CNN Fires Roesgen

We have some great victories to pass along to our fellow conservatives - further evidence that your efforts and activism are paying off!

1st: CNN is dumping their liberal, anti-Tea Party correspondent, Susan Roesgen. Roesgen was the reporter who decided to harass those who attended the April 15th Tea Party in Chicago, IL, instead of serving as an unbiased journalist (yes, we know -- a bit of an oxymoron there). In response, we here at the Our Country Deserves Better Committee launched an online grass roots effort that flooded CNN's offices with tens of thousands of phone calls and emails. And CNN felt the heat - first sending Roesgen on leave for a suddenly scheduled vacation, and now deciding to part ways with Roesgen altogether.

2nd: Polls show a further drop in support for the Barack Obama/Nancy Pelosi socialistic health care plan. We here at the Our Country Deserves Better Committee are working on a new TV ad that we will unveil this week that will push further to defeat this awful, big-government montrosity. If you want to help us fight back to defeat Obamacare, please make a donation to our TV ad campaign by - CLICKING HERE.

3rd: Our TV ad, "It's Not Iran, It's Obama's Administration" continues to attract attention from across the nation. More than 227,000 people have watched the ad online at YouTube alone in addition to the broadcasts of the ad so far!

4th: And that's just the beginning. In about 40 days we will launch the "Tea Party Express" that will take the tea party movement to the next level - bringing real change to government as we take back our country from the far Left, tax-spend-bailout liberals who currently control Congress and the White House. Be sure to sign up and get involved for this huge national effort at: http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/ct/3236582:4426301039:m:1:119567526:2573B0D73B863EBF41606350C11CFEDB

TEEN PEDESTRIAN KILLED IN DUI RELATED CRASH

(Keymar, MD) – A Frederick County man is in custody this morning charged with multiple criminal and traffic charges after he was involved in a crash last night that took the life of a Carroll County teenager.

The victim is identified as Katlynn E. Bossler, 15, of the 1100-block of Francis Scott Key Highway, Keymar, Md. Bossler was pronounced dead at the Carroll Hospital Center.

The accused is identified as Kevin P. Smith, 42, of the 11000-block of Whiskey Springs Road, Woodsboro, Md. After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office, troopers charged Smith with negligent manslaughter by automobile, negligent automobile homicide while under the influence, negligent homicide by automobile while impaired, driving a vehicle while under the influence, driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol per se, driving while impaired by alcohol, negligent driving, reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to exercise due care to avoid a pedestrian collision, and consuming an alcoholic beverage in the passenger area of a motor vehicle on a highway.

At about10:30 p.m. yesterday, Maryland state troopers from the Westminster Barracks and EMS units from the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash in the 1100-block of Francis Scott Key Highway, Keymar. Arriving troopers found that a 1992 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Smith had struck the victim and a vehicle parked along the shoulder of the roadway. The victim was provided emergency care and transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police CRASH Team responded and conducted the investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates Bossler was standing outside the driver’s side door of a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the roadway. That vehicle was a 1998 Chevrolet Prizm, driven by Jason R.Wadas, 16, of the 600-block of Whispering Meadows Court, Westminster. Also in the vehicle were three other teenagers aged 15 to 18 years. Wadas had stopped his vehicle on the far side of the northbound shoulder near Bossler’s residence. Bossler was talking with Wadas and the teens in the car.

The investigation indicates Smith was northbound on Francis Scott Key Highway (Rt. 194) when his truck left the roadway and traveled onto the shoulder. His truck struck the driver’s side door of the Chevrolet Prizm, where the victim was standing.

When troopers contacted Smith at the scene, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected. After further investigation, troopers arrested Smith at the scene for driving under the influence. Information regarding results of any tests that may have been administered is considered evidentiary and will not be released.

Smith was transported to the Westminster Barracks for processing. He was then taken to the Carroll County Central Booking Center for a bond hearing.

All four individuals in the Chevrolet Prizm were transported to the Carroll Hospital Center by the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Department. Their conditions are not known.

The investigation is continuing.
