Arrest of an individual for the Attempted Carjacking at the Sheetz convenience store parking lot

IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 20, 2009

Detectives from the Westminster Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau have made an arrest for the attempted carjacking that occurred on the Sheetz convenience store parking lot at 304 E. Main St. on August 17, 2009.

Christopher Carl Calp, w/m, DOB 5/17/1973 was apprehended this morning at his residence in the 100 block of E. Broadway, Red Lion PA. He was apprehended by the US Marshall Service and York Area Regional Police Department without incident. He was wanted on a warrant out of Pennsylvania for VOP as well as a Westminster Police Department warrant for the following;

Attempted Car Jacking
Attempted Theft - $500 Plus
Theft $500 Plus
Assault 2nd Degree
Motor Vehicle Unlawful Taking

Mr. Calp is currently being held in York County, PA awaiting a hearing on the Pennsylvania charge. Once all criminal proceedings are completed in Pennsylvania, Mr. Calp will be returned to Maryland.

It was last Monday that the Westminster City Police reported:

IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 18, 2009

The Westminster Police Department is investigating an attempted carjacking that occurred at the Sheetz store in the 300 block of East Main St at approximately 11:40 pm on Monday August 17, 2009. The sole occupant of a vehicle at the location was approached by a male subject who demanded that the occupant exit their vehicle and intimated he had a weapon. The male subject repeated his demand and opened the car door. The occupant screamed and the subject fled on foot in an unknown direction. No injuries occurred to the vehicle occupant.

The suspect is described as a white male, in his 30’s or 40’s, less than 6 feet tall wearing a tee shirt and shorts.

The Westminster Police Department is offering a cash reward of up to $500.00 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for this robbery. Anyone with information relating to these investigations should contact the Westminster Police Department at (410) 848-4646. They may also call anonymously by using the confidential “Tips Line” at (410) 857-TIPS.

This incident is being investigated by Det. Jeff Schuster of the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

MSNBC SINKS TO NEW LOW: Doesn’t Show Race of Man Carrying Gun at Obama Rally

On Monday, at a VFW rally for Barack Obama in Arizona a black man made news on CNN when he showed up with an assault weapon and a pistol strapped to his shoulder and waist respectively.

At MSNBC guns in full view at an event where the president was speaking was newsworthy. However, the race of the man actually carrying them didn’t square with what they were reporting - that anti-Obama protesters are racists with itchy trigger fingers ready to go off half-cocked.

It certainly didn’t fit the paradigm of biased media outlets. Is that a sufficient reason to manipulate news footage to perpetuate that paradigm?

Is that what happened? The video shown clearly does not show the race of the man. Nor is his race identified by any of the three people discussing the issue.

In fact, Contessa Brewer at one point says, “Here you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped to their waste.” Click the link to view the segment and judge for yourself.

A majority of Americans now see the war in Afghanistan as not worth fighting and just a quarter say more U.S. troops should be sent to the country, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Most have confidence in the ability of the United States to meet its primary goals — defeating the Taliban, facilitating effective economic development and molding an honest and effective Afghan government — but very few say Thursday’s elections there are likely to produce such a government.

Baltimore County Council Chairman Joe Bartenfelder is hosting an information community meeting this week on the proposed legislation to authorize speed cameras in Baltimore County.

The meeting will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Towson Library, 320 York Road.

Legislation proposing speed cameras in school zones was introduced at the County Council this month, and will be the subject of a Sept. 1 work session.

A vote on the measure is expected at the council’s Sept. 8 meeting.

Some folks have asked where they may find my tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, “Shriver remembered for Special Olympics and also for a connection to Carroll that appeared my Carroll Eagle Archives column on Sunday August 16, 2009

So I thought what I would do is post the long version which is unedited to meet word limit…

Last Tuesday, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, died at a hospital on Cape Cod surrounded by several generations of her large family. She was 88 years old.

Inspired by her sister, Rosemary Kennedy, who was born mentally retarded, Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 for persons with intellectual disabilities.

As a child, Rosemary and Eunice Kennedy are reported to have spent a great deal of time together swimming and sailing. Rosemary died in 2005.

Shriver earned a sociology degree from Stanford University in 1943 and subsequently worked as a social worker at a prison for women in Alderson, W. Va, and the juvenile courts system in Chicago, before she took over the philanthropic foundation named after her brother, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., who had been killed fighting in WW II.

Throughout her lifetime received numerous awards for her work with children. In 1962, when no one spoke in public about the mentally handicapped, Shriver broke the ice and turned on the light on the plight of the handicapped.

It was then that she “revealed her sister's condition to the nation during her brother's presidency in a 1962 article for the Saturday Evening Post,” according to a number of historical accounts of Shriver’s incredible life of service to our nation.

A year earlier, in 1961, President Kennedy “signed a bill she championed to form the first President's Committee on Mental Retardation,” according to news accounts.

Shriver was the fifth of nine children in the family of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were two of her more famous brothers.

Many folks will also remember her as the mother of former NBC newswoman Maria Shriver; and the mother-in-law of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She married R. Sargent Shriver, from Willis Street in Westminster, in 1953. Sargent is a member of the historic Shriver family in Carroll County, known as community, political and business leaders; whose heritage has been, in part, preserved by the Union Mills Homestead.

He later became President Kennedy’s first director of the Peace Corps. He was also Sen. George McGovern's running mate in 1972, and ran for president himself in 1976. It is reported that the couple were very close and that she was an integral part of her husband’s political career.

However, it is through the Special Olympics that she will live on through the ages.

She was the daughter of a millionaire, the sister of a president and a U.S. Senator, and the mother-in-law of a governor; however she is best known for her tireless lifelong commitment to the mentally handicapped – and the Special Olympics.

Tovia Smith said it best on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered:” Shriver “was born to one of America’s most powerful families but spent her life laboring for some of the least powerful.”

After my column, "For the left, war without Bush is not war at all," appeared Tuesday, I got a note from Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war activist who was the subject of so much press coverage when she led a protest against the Iraq war outside then-President George W. Bush's ranch in Texas. This is what the note said:

“I read your column about the "anti-war" movement and I can't believe I am saying this, but I mostly agree with you.

“The "anti-war" "left" was used by the Democratic Party. I like to call it the "anti-Republican
War" movement…”

Columnist Robert D. Novak dies after battle with cancer

Robert D. Novak, who began covering Washington during the Eisenhower administration and later achieved fame as a columnist and television commentator, died in his home Tuesday morning after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 78.

A nationally syndicated columnist for 45 years, Novak wrote “Inside Report”—a reported column on the inner workings of Washington policy and politics—with Rowland Evans six days a week from 1963 until Evans’ retirement in 1993. For 15 years, Novak continued the column—thrice weekly—until a brain tumor forced his retirement in July 2008.

Cable television made Novak’s a familiar face nationwide. An early star at the nascent CNN in 1980, Novak was a fixture on the right at CNN’s Crossfire, and he relished his work as the executive producer of the Capital Gang.

First it was Bill Clinton in North Korea, escorting home two scared US journalists from the clutches of Kim Jong Il. Now, Senator Jim Webb returns from Burma with the hapless American eccentric, John Yettaw.

For a politician, there are few more glorious moments than jetting home from a despotic regime with imprisoned compatriots in tow. But the liberation of Mr Yettaw was the least important and interesting achievement of Mr Webb’s trip.

Whether you regard Mr Yettaw as a well-meaning buffoon or an arrogant busybody, he hardly deserved such a prompt and high-level intervention.
The ironies of his release this weekend are painful. In setting him free, the Burmese junta manages to project an image of magnanimity for cancelling a sentence out of all proportion to Mr Yettaw’s “crimes”. And, as he flies back to obscurity in Missouri, Aung San Suu Kyi and her two female companions are left to pay the price of his fecklessness.

A guy buys a box of old papers at a flea market. He’s a history buff, so he’s into that kind of thing. He gets the box home and sorts through it. Lo and behold, at the bottom of that stack is an envelope with Abraham Lincoln’s signature on it. Turns out, it could be the last thing President Lincoln ever signed.

The envelope says simply: “Let this man enter with this note. April 14, 1865. A. Lincoln.” From the Morning Journal of Northern Ohio:
