Hoby Wolf, longtime political columnist, community activist and stalwart of life in South Carroll, died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010.

He was 85.

Word of Hoby’s passing spread quickly on Tuesday, circulated by the close-knit Carroll County community he cherished. He was considered by many as a pillar on the landscape of Carroll County.

He had served for many years as a columnist for The Eldersburg Eagle, The Northern News, The Westminster Eagle, The Carroll Eagle, The Carroll County Times and the Carroll Standard.

At the Eagle, he was an enduring symbol of the paper’s opinion page, which he shared with supporters, cordial rivals and even, on occasion, a few detractors. He welcomed them all, and above all enjoyed the mix of opinions and the freedom to express them.

To the Eagle staff, he was a constant source of energy, support, optimism and determination. He truly had an eagle’s spirit.

Hoby was known throughout the county, and was a member of numerous political clubs, including the South Carroll Business Association. He was also a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Sykesville. His interests were as broad as his circle of friends -- he was equality at home at a meeting of the South Carroll Business Association as he was with the Christian Farmers Association.

Town of Sykesville Reminder

REMINDER TO ALL TOWN RESIDENTS

Now that the storm is over we are left with very high piles of snow along, and at the corners, of our streets. This can make visibility difficult for both motorists and pedestrians. As our children return to school tomorrow, we would like to remind everyone to ensure that the sidewalks that front your properties are shoveled and clear for our children.

We encourage motorists to keep a special look out for students who are walking to school or waiting at bus stops. We ask parents to remind their children to be on the look out for motorists as they cross the street and wait at bus stops. We thank you all in advance for your help in ensuring the safety of our children.

A recent blog post by “The Vail Spot” has gotten many Marylanders excited about a possible retirement from Democratic Senator Barbara Mikulski. Unfortunately, according to numerous sources, the rumor is not true.

Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post, Mike Memoli of RealClearPolitics, and the National Review Online have all reported that the 73 year-old Senator will not step down anytime soon.

[…]

Since 1976, Mikulski has never gotten less than 60% of the vote in any election.

Byron York - Rachel Maddow throws a cheap shot at an honest vote

"Just this week you were at a community college touting a $350,000 green technology education program, talking about how great that was going to be for your district," she said to Schock. "You voted against the bill that created that grant. And so that's happening a lot with Republicans sort of taking credit for things that Democratic bills do, and then Republicans simultaneously touting their votes against them and trashing them."

If no one else qualifies for the May primary ballot, Democratic party leaders will choose their nominee in a caucus. But there is still someone out there trying to gather the signatures needed to get the Democratic nomination:

Susan Ferrechio - Bayh drops re-election bid, sending Dems scrambling again

With Bayh's retirement, there are now eight Senate seats currently held by Democrats that Republicans may grab this fall.

February 15 1898 The Maine Explodes

Welcome to the THIS DAY IN HISTORY newsletter from History.com

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
February 15: General Interest
1898 : The Maine explodes
A massive explosion of unknown origin sinks the battleship USS Maine in Cuba's Havana harbor, killing 260 of the fewer than 400 American crew members aboard.
One of the first American battleships, the Maine weighed more than 6,000 tons and was built at a cost of more than $2 million. Ostensibly on a friendly visit, the Maine had been sent to Cuba to protect the interests of Americans there after a rebellion against Spanish rule broke out in Havana in January.
An official U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry ruled in March that the ship was blown up by a mine, without directly placing the blame on Spain. Much of Congress and a majority of the American public expressed little doubt that Spain was responsible and called for a declaration of war.
Subsequent diplomatic failures to resolve the Maine matter, coupled with United States indignation over Spain's brutal suppression of the Cuban rebellion and continued losses to American investment, led to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in April 1898.
Within three months, the United States had decisively defeated Spanish forces on land and sea, and in August an armistice halted the fighting. On December 12, 1898, the Treaty of Paris was signed between the United States and Spain, officially ending the Spanish-American War and granting the United States its first overseas empire with the ceding of such former Spanish possessions as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
In 1976, a team of American naval investigators concluded that the Maine explosion was likely caused by a fire that ignited its ammunition stocks, not by a Spanish mine or act of sabotage.
Main Street Westminster MD after a heavy snowfall circa 1940s
Update: Historian Joe Getty says: “could be the "Palm Sunday Snowstorm" of 1942. My Northern News article this week mentions it: "An unusual storm known as the “Palm Sunday Snowstorm... See More” hit Carroll County on March 29-30, 1942. In Westminster, this storm delivered one of largest one-day accumulations (22 inches in 24 hours) and a total of 32 inches. This was a localized storm that primarily affected only Maryland instead of the broader mid-Atlantic region. As a late season storm, the wet, heavy snow fell on trees and plants that had already blossomed and caused damage to crops and fruit trees, fallen limbs and branches and downed power lines throughout this region."
Historical Society of Carroll County has photos of the Palm Sunday Snowstorm that you could compare your image to - Ed Hailfley of Frizzellburg had some great shots of that snowstorm as well.
This image shows Main Street Westminster MD after a heavy snowfall. I do not recall where I got this image… I have always thought that renowned Westminster photographer Charles Magee took the photo after a heavy snowfall in 1946, but this is only hypothecation and in the end, I do not know the year or the photographer. If you know, please be in touch.
VP vs. VP: Cheney calls Biden 'dead wrong'
In a lengthy, blow-by-blow analysis, Politico recounts today’s war of words between Vice President Joe Biden and former Vice President Dick on the Sunday morning talk show circuit:
Vice President Joe Biden and former Vice President Dick Cheney hurtled barbs across the airwaves Sunday morning in a split-screen debate over terrorism, charging each other with being dangerously “misinformed” or just “dead wrong.”
The rare dueling sit-downs – Biden on NBC and CBS, Cheney on ABC – broke little new ground, but amounted to a point-by-point defense of each vice president’s view of the war on terrorism, and a recitation of how the other side has screwed it up.
Biden said Cheney “doesn’t listen” and has not given President Obama credit for killing dozens of al Qaeda leaders and associates in what he characterized as a more aggressive fight against terrorism than was waged under the Bush administration.
Cheney shot back that Obama has a dangerously passive, pre-9/11 approach to national security that views terrorism as a mere crime, not a strategic threat against the United States.
“It’s the mindset that concerns me,” Cheney said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
The vice presidents differed on the handling of terrorism suspects, the closing of Guantanamo Bay and on the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, such as waterboarding, with Cheney saying the president must have all those tools at his disposal to get information from suspected terrorists and Biden saying flatly that waterboarding is not effective and should not be used in any circumstances.
Cheney did agree with the Obama administration on two points. He echoed his fellow Republicans by expressing support for the surge in Afghanistan, but broke with some members of the GOP, including Sen. John McCain of Arizona, in supporting the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Cheney, who served as defense secretary under President George H.W. Bush, said that while 20 years ago the military was a strong advocate of the policy that bans gays from openly serving in the military, “things have changed significantly since then.”
“When the [Joint] Chiefs [of Staff] come forward and say, ‘We think we can do it,’ then that strikes me that it’s time to reconsider the policy,” Cheney said.
Biden had one advantage in the Sunday showdown – he got the last word. In addition to releasing a transcript of his pre-taped interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” before Cheney appeared on “This Week,” Biden was able to respond directly to ABC interview minutes after it ended by going live on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
I managed, after many attempts, to photograph a tarpon at Robbie's Marina, http://www.robbies.com/, 77522 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, FL 33036-3813, (305) 664-9814 – just as it opened its mouth to grab a snack from my wife’s hand.
http://www.robbies.com/tarpon.htm
“According to Robbie’s web site history: “Robbie and his wife Mona started feeding Scarface 18 years ago. Scarface appeared floundering in the shallow waters near the dock; Robbie saw the struggling tarpon and, thinking it had swum too shallow and gotten stuck on the bank, went out into the water to free it. He lifted the fish and saw that the right side of its jaw was torn open. Hoping to revive the tarpon, Robbie placed it in the oxygen-rich shrimp tank and called old Doc Roach. The doctor showed up with his wife's mattress needles and some twine, and Scarface became the first known tarpon with stitches. After several days of force-feeding, Scarface showed good recovery and weight gain; six months later he was released into the waters off the dock. Afterwards, Scarface continued to frequent the docks; sometimes bringing a friend. Soon more and more of the fish began to appear.
“Today, the tradition continues, with visitors from all across the world coming to marvel at the spectacle and offer these magnificent creatures a snack.”
The web site, http://www.robbies.com/, explains, “Robbie’s rests peacefully among coconut palms with shimmering views of the nearby islands where the unspoiled Florida Bay and the exquisite Atlantic Ocean converge. Cooled by the gentle trade winds, and cantilevered over crystal clear aquamarine waters, with a private sandy beach, one cannot help but understand why so many artists have chosen this place to immortalize in paintings. Robbie’s comprises quaint and discreet pavilions surrounded by lush tropical landscaping offering a taste of everything the Keys have to offer.
“An eclectic fusion of nostalgic Florida Keys understated elegance with the more modern conveniences of shopping for everything from beads to fine art and hammocks, and dining at eateries from sidewalk vendors to five star cuisine overlooking the water, in one of Islamorada’s most discreetly placed restaurants—even the most discriminating of visitors will find themselves captivated by everything Robbie’s has to offer…”
