Some of My Best Friends
Roy Meachum
Some of my best friends had a rollicking time Thursday, speaking and ranting against Washington, the White House and the current resident. If you’re read my columns, I have made crystal clear my opinions on all three.

Don’t Let the Gas Pass
Joe Charlebois
The Environmental Protection Agency yesterday announced plans to further limit the release of toxic greenhouse gases in a press release entitled “A Summary of Current Threats to Global Air Quality and Recommendations to Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions.” The new summary provides guidelines and details future requirements.

Gwen Ifill: The Dreams
Kevin E. Dayhoff
These days, the only people who seem to care about race are the political hard right, left-wingers, and the media-elite who are pounding that narrative in order to appear relevant or desperately wanting to impugn critics of President Barack Obama.

2010 Election Candidates
John W. Ashbury
As a public service TheTentacle.com will publish every Friday the list of Candidates who have filed for the various elective  offices which will appear on the ballot in the September Primary Election. If errors appear, please notify me at info@thetentacle.com.

Families and Communication
Patricia A. Kelly
They say that children raised in front of video games will grow up missing the skill of reading body language. They say this will hinder their ability to pick up social cues, and, thus, their ability to communicate effectively.

Gwen Ifill: The Scars
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Last week a noted Public Broadcasting host spoke at Gettysburg College for about 25 minutes from prepared remarks and then took 16 questions from the audience for another half-an-hour on everything from her thoughts on the “Tea Party” movement, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, to the national debt.

A REVIEW – The Play with Three Authors
Roy Meachum
In a play Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre Company opened last weekend, the writer is publicized as the French tragedian Pierre Corneille; “The Liar” is listed as his only comedy. But Monsieur Corneille publicly proclaimed he had lifted the idea from Spanish-American Jose Ruiz de Alarcon.

Gwen Ifill: The Difficulties
Kevin E. Dayhoff
In the pursuit of gaining more insights into the caustic vagaries and vituperative whims of all things divided and bitter that is Washington these days, I attended a presentation recently by a distinguished Public Broadcasting Service journalist and left the building with more questions than answers.

A Volcanic Adventure…
Tom McLaughlin
Bandung, Java Island, Indonesia – “A sidewalk!” I cried. “A real sidewalk!” We were usually walking in the road next to roaring motorcycles and trucks, often able to kiss the driver or his partner on a bike with just a lean over and pucker. Getting excited over this red brick pathway may seem ridiculous until one has spent time dodging vehicles in most Indonesian cities.

A REVIEW – Wrong About “Phantom”
Roy Meachum
When “The Phantom of the Opera” first played before my reviewer’s eyes, some 25 years ago, at the Kennedy Center, it earned a negative notice. Looking at the show, opening night at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre, I was shocked to find how wrong I was.

Right, But for Wrong Reason
Roy Meachum
In proclaiming April a Confederate history month without mentioning slavery, Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell was right, but for the wrong reason.

The Assault on Americanism

I often amaze my motorcycle-riding friends with my memory for facts, and my ability to put recent events in chronological order, and assign a certain event an approximate date.

Campaign Diary – Post Easter Weekend
Michael Kurtianyk
Our family typically drives up to New York to see my mom and my wife’s parents, all in Upstate New York. However, this year, due to my candidacy and real estate commitments, we stayed home. It was great to get caught up with work and reflect on a few things.

Playing the Race Card
Roy Meachum
Frederick Republican friends introduced Michael Steele when he was running for lieutenant governor, in 2002; I found him diffident and very intelligent. He had a warm smile. Robert Ehrlich headed the ticket.

A Statement from the Author
Joe Charlebois
On Faith – There is a God. A higher being created the world where we are all born free with basic natural rights. Our founders acknowledged this time and time again.

Porn Star Won't Challenge Vitter for La. Senate

Thursday, 15 Apr 2010 09:11 PM

Louisiana-born porn star Stormy Daniels announced Thursday that she will not run for U.S. Senate in her home state, ending a yearlong flirtation with politics that began as Republican incumbent Sen. David Vitter was working to overcome a sex scandal.

In an e-mailed statement, Daniels said she cannot afford a run for the Senate and, comparing herself to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, complained that the media never took her interest in the race seriously.

"To begin with, like Governor Palin, I have become a target of the cynical stalwarts of the status quo," Daniels said. "Simply because I did not fit in their mold of what an independent working woman should be, the media and political elite have sought to relegate my sense of civic responsibility to mere sideshow antics."

Daniels recently declared herself a convert to the GOP with a press release making light of news that the Republican National Committee had picked up a nearly $2,000 tab at a sex-themed California nightclub. But her political publicity has been handled by Democratic operative Brian Welsh.

If nothing else, a Daniels campaign for the Republican nomination would have been a constant reminder of the 2007 scandal that broke when Vitter's phone number appeared in the records of a Washington prostitution ring. Other than admitting a "serious sin," he has steadfastly refused to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, his political career seems to have survived intact. He has raised plenty of campaign money while bashing the policies of President Barack Obama, who is not popular in the state.

Today, at 4:30 p.m. on Lawyers’ Mall in Annapolis, Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy will hold a press conference to announce that former Maryland Delegate (R-District 5A, Carroll Co.) Carmen Amedori will join his ticket as his lieutenant governor running mate.

Brian will be joined by Jim Pelura, former Maryland GOP chairman; Charles Lollar, candidate for U.S. Congress; Jerry Walker, candidate for Anne Arundel County Council; and Eric Cary, candidate for State Senate, according to a Murphy campaign press release..

Amedori, who was present at last night’s Westminster Tax Day Tea Party, in the parking lot at Legends Café, on Route 140 was found in the back of the crowd sporting her newly minted “Murphy – Amedori for Maryland (Governor)” signs.

It was earlier on Thursday that word got out that Amedori, who most recently served on the Maryland parole commission member until January, is abandoning her bid for the Republican nomination to oppose U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore.

She had been appointed to her position on the parole commission by then-Governor Ehrlich, who is now her opponent in the upcoming September 14, Maryland Republican primary.

The buzz at last night’s Tea Party was that Murphy is adding Amedori to the ticket to reach-out to conservative voters in the upcoming primary contest; although with so many Ehrlich supporters in the crowd, no one was willing to speak on the record.

Last night Amedori praised Murphy’s small business credentials noting that it was actually Ehrlich who has been on record as saying that it will take someone with a business background to beat incumbent Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley in this fall’s November general election.

Amedori had previously announced in February that she was going to run to unseat the four-term incumbent, Mikulski, by participating in a crowded Republican primary but recently changed her mind to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor.

This latest development is certain to make the summer political season that much more interesting.

Shoemaker announces Commissioner bid

Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker will announced to an enthusiastic group of supporters gathered at the New York J&P restaurant in Hampstead last night that he intends to run for the newly formed Carroll County District 2 Commissioner seat this fall.

"For the past few years, folks have approached me, and asked me to consider running for Commissioner," Shoemaker said. "And it's a decision that I have made after much deliberation," he said.

Shoemaker cited concerns with the push for a county police force, the failed Pathways plan, airport expansion, the waste-to-energy plant, and overspending.

"One of the things I've learned as a small town Mayor is that communities like Hampstead and Finksburg can be profoundly impacted by decisions made in on Center Street in Westminster," Shoemaker said. "You get to the grassroots in these communities and you find out pretty quick, it's not the local folks who want to do things like trim back the Sheriff to create an expensive, new county police force. The county government we have now is not the one most people want."

Shoemaker was elected Hampstead's Mayor in May 2003 and re-elected in 2007.

He also has served as a member of the Town Council. As an attorney in private practice, Shoemaker has a small office in a historic residence he recently renovated.

In addition to his public service, he has actively supported local charities, serves on the board of the Marriage Resource Center, Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County, as a Deacon at Westminster Baptist Church, and has coached and sponsored Little League Baseball teams.

Shoemaker cited the construction of the Hampstead Bypass, conversion of the old Hampstead School into 84 units of affordable senior housing, construction of a new 17-acre park, improvements to the town water system, and a 50% expansion of the town's police department, all without any tax increases, as credentials.

"It is now time to roll up my sleeves for the people of Carroll County", Shoemaker said. He also pledged" I think it's time for a new approach in this county. I believe there should be term limits for everybody from dog catcher on up and that applies to me as well."
