The Tentacle: Spellbound by Salvador Dali by Kevin E. Dayhoff March 25, 2009

Happy Birthday Salvador Dali

The Tentacle: Spellbound by Salvador Dali by Kevin E. Dayhoff March 25, 2009

Last month I enjoyed a bit of respite from Maryland’s winter by visiting Florida. Finding myself within reasonable driving distance of St. Petersburg, I jumped at the chance to visit the Salvador Dali Museum.

Located on the waterfront in Barboro Harbor, it is the “largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Spain,” according to Peggy McKendry, the assistant to the director of the museum.

The museum, which opened in a renovated marine warehouse March 7, 1982, is the home of 2,140 pieces of Salvador Dali’s art, including 96 oil paintings and eight huge master works.

This collection began in Cleveland, OH, in 1942. Collecting Dali’s art was the lifelong passion of industrialist A. Reynolds Morse, and his wife Eleanor Reese Morse.

[…]

In recent years, I have visited art museums – from San Diego, Salt Lake City, Anchorage, Boston, Washington, and Baltimore – and I found the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg to be one of the friendliest exhibitions I have ever seen.

Everyone from Ms. McKendry, to the extremely knowledgeable docents, and even the museum guards went out of their way to make sure you knew that the museum was there to serve, entertain, and educate.

Such accessibility is critical if you are to have a meaningful experience exploring 20th century contemporary art – especially the work of Salvador Dali.

[…]

While I was doing some additional research on Dali, after I visited the museum, I had the great fortune to talk with Dan Twyman, the senior art consultant for the “Salvador Dali Society,” in Redondo Beach, CA, the owner of the website, http://www.salvadordaliexperts.com/ and a volunteer expert for the website http://www.allexperts.com/ in the fine art category.

Dawn S. Buell, well-known bank teller and animal lover, dead at 51

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home

Last Saturday afternoon, the popular head teller at the New Windsor State Bank College Square branch in Westminster, Dawn Susan Buell, 51, stepped outside to enjoy a walk with her dog, when she was tragically struck and killed by a passing car.

Buell, a well-known longstanding bank employee in the Westminster community had previously worked at the old Carroll County Bank and Trust Company, before she went to work with New Windsor State Bank.

She is fondly remembered as a people-person and an animal-lover, who planted flowers in the planters at the bank branch.

She had just celebrated her 51st birthday. Formerly of Gettysburg, she was born on April 24, 1959 in Baltimore. She was the daughter of the late James M. and Lillian M. (Giesler) Buell and a 1977 graduate of Westminster High School, according to her obituary.

She will be greatly missed by her friends, family, loved-ones and co-workers; especially her long-time boyfriend Jeffrey Young of Gettysburg, PA and her sister Gwyn, for whom she has been the loving and devoted caregiver for the past number of years.

It is well known that Buell loved and cared for all types of animals, however she was also an avid antique collector, and she loved to go shopping.

According to the Maryland State Police, on May 8th at 1:20 p.m. state police troopers and emergency responders from the Reese Volunteer Fire Company were called to Bethel Road and Sherwood Road, near the Bethel-Carrollton Church of God, between Carrollton and Patapsco in the greater Finksburg area of the county.

The State Police reported that Buell succumbed to injuries sustained as a result of the crash at the scene. State Police and the emergency responders were able to determine that Buell went to retrieve her dog as it suddenly darted into the street and she stepped in front of a 1998 Chrysler Sebring automobile, driven by Christopher Lee Childers, 19, from Westminster.

Her dog was injured in the accident and treated by a local veterinarian, police say. No charges have been placed against Childers as a result of the accident, although the road was closed for two hours after the accident and the investigation continues.

Dan Hartzler, the chair of the board of New Windsor State Bank said in phone interview on Monday, “the entire bank is at a loss. We are deeply saddened… She knew the banking business well. She was very much into people. She made you feel like you were the most important thing she had to do that day… Very much a community-oriented customer service person…,” Hartzler added as his voice trailed off.

Surviving are her brother James M. Buell and wife Karen, of Westminster, sister Gwyn L. Buell, of Finksburg; long-time boyfriend Jeffrey Young of Gettysburg, PA; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Cabllero, Todd Grimes, and Holly and Mandy Buell; great nieces and nephews, Bryson, Skylar and Maddox Cabllero. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Lynn Carol Young.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with her pastor, the Rev. David L. Meador, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Carrollton Church of God Cemetery in Finksburg.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20037

Lawrence Weiner tames the volcano

Lawrence Weiner tames the volcano

Photo: Börkur Arnarson

By Oliver Basciano

Timing is everything and Lawrence Weiner’s, it seems, is impeccable. His formative work in the 1960s was a series of controlled explosions in the California desert. Now at the age of sixty-eight, and during the life of his current exhibition at i8 Gallery in Reykjavik, the artist’s past is catching up on him courtesy of nature.

Planned for months and having opened at the end of March, the show seems to make prescient reference to the eruption of the now-infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcano, 120km southeast of the Icelandic capital. Made up of a series of Weiner’s wall and canvas based text and graphic-led works, the sloganeering statements seem to egg on the eruptions: “To The Limits of Its Voltality” the main wall declares. As this photo of Weiner, taken in front of Eyjafjallajokull after the opening of his show, indicates, the artist is pretty pleased with the coincidence.

The 20x200 Newsletter : Edition Announcement #271 - Lawrence Weiner

Wednesday Edition: LAWRENCE WEINER

HEAD OVER HEELS by LAWRENCE WEINER
10"x8" ($50) 20"x16" ($500) 30"x24" ($2000) 40"x30" ($5000)

[PLEASE NOTE PURCHASE LIMITS BELOW.]

What I'm really hoping is that today's edition—HEAD OVER HEELS—shows up in bars. You know, places like Fanelli's or the Scratcher or 288, or the spot up the street from your office where you grab a drink after work. Or ideally, somewhere in the West Village close enough to where Lawrence Weiner lives that he might stroll by and see it through the window. It should be in bars. Lots of them. Why? Because that's what Lawrence wants and if I've ever met a man who deserves to get what he wants, he's the one.

Why Lawrence wants this is what makes him kind of magical and amazing. You see, he figures that if it shows up in bars, it's likely to be seen by people who will experience it for what it is (or, rather, what they make of it) instead of being seen as a thing that was made by HIM. (We'll have to allow for a higher likelihood of positive IDs here among the erudite drinkers of the City of New York, but still!) This is what Lawrence wants with all of his work—for people to see it—LOTS of people, and for those people to make it their own.

I often talk about how much I love my job, almost to the extent that it sometimes feels like gloating. But it's hard not to yammer on about it when I've got a gig that involves an afternoon spent in the home and studio of Lawrence Weiner, surrounded by his art, and the art of his friends (think Ruscha, Sol LeWitt) and the people he holds dear—his wife Alice and a staff that seems like family. It's a home possessed with a serenity and peaceful happiness as to feel almost cult-like, except for the hints of playfulness that peek out unexpectedly at every turn. Its bones are drawn from the familiar vocabulary of contemporary architecture—there are industrial materials and clean lines—but they're punctuated by floors and ceilings painted in rich, strong hues. The three hours that Sara, Philae and I spent there were incredible. LW is so articulate and profound, it was tempting to scribble down nearly everything he said. (And this coming from someone who is a terrible notetaker!) But the most memorable moments conveniently connect to what Weiner was thinking when he created HEAD OVER HEELS.

Here's the thing to know about Weiner. He's kind of a socialist, in a way that reminds me of my born-of-Eastern-European-immigrants grandfather. As he says in the video I just linked to, he believes that everyone should have a roof over their heads, food in their stomachs and an education—and that the state should provide it. But here's the thing—he's not a Marxist. He'd like to be, but in his lifetime—in our lifetime—we've witnessed its corruption and failure. And being a bohemian, a 60s conceptualist pioneer, a reader and a thinker makes it hard to cast your lot with God and angels.

Lawrence laid out these bookends before us simply and eloquently, and yes, we were hanging on his every word. He said "Where are we without either? All we want, all anyone wants, is to be a good person. But how?"

Having dispensed with Marx and angels, we're adrift—head over heels—trying to be good, trying to have heart. All anyone wants is to be a good person—but how? I've thought about that a lot since that day, and in thinking about it, have come to understand more what LW means when he says that he wants people to see this image as an icon, independent of him and art and the art world and everything else.

To be a good person is a practice; it requires constant effort and correction. It seems no mistake that there's a heart at the center of the icon Lawrence has created for us. It's something to meditate on and to anchor oneself to, something to go after, if you will and something to share with the world.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING PURCHASING LIMITS:

- We're limiting collectors to two 10"x8" prints each, and only one per collector for prints 20"x16" and larger.
- This edition is not eligible for any discount or promotion.
- We reserve the right to refund purchases if we determine that a single collector has acquired multiple prints or used a discount code.

George Washington racks-up $300k in overdue library fines
Posted 5/10/10 by Carroll Eagle By Kevin Dayhoff
British Broadcasting Corp. is reporting that archivists in New York’s oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books.

It has been recently revealed that on Oct. 5, 1789, our nation’s first president, George Washington, borrowed two books from what was then the only library in Manhattan, the New York Society Library.

According to BBC, on Oct. 5, 1789, a time when New York City was serving as our nation’s capital, Washington borrowed the “Law of Nations,” a dissertation on international relations, and Vol. 12 of a collection of transcripts of debate transcripts from Britain's House of Commons.

Now this in itself may not be earth-shattering news. However there is a catch. ...

It appears that the books were due a month later but they were never returned. GASP!

At the moment, the overdue fines for this lapse, by the president who never told a lie, have grown to $300,000 in the ensuing 220 years.

Our nation's first president may not have told a lie, but he was not without his faults Posted 5/10/10 by Carroll Eagle – Updated Dec. 14, 2016 - the link to the Carroll Eagle is now dead. For a while, the Baltimore Sun picked-up the stories, but alas, all the links are now dead – the link simply takes you to the Baltimore Sun…. It was updated in response to a colleague’s (CAMK) confession on Facebook that she owes the library late-fees. Too funny.

Companies looking to drop employer-sponsored health insurance?

Companies looking to drop employer-sponsored health insurance? May 6, 2010

Marketplace on Twitter

http://www.publicradio.org/columns/marketplace/business-news-briefs/2010/05/companies_looking_to_drop_empl.html

att_healthcare.top.gif

CNN has attained internal documents that reveal big companies like AT&T, Deere, and Verizon debated whether to dump “the health care coverage they provide to their workers in exchange for paying penalty fees to the government.”

Is this the unintended consequence of the new health care legislation: companies saving money by opting to pay government penalties, rather than continuing to insure employees?

Although Congress first requested the companies’ documents, at no point did the government reveal that companies were deliberating dropping coverage. But deliberate they did.

At&T, for example, produced a PowerPoint presentation: “Medical Cost Versus No Coverage Penalty.” It found that its health care cost would fall from $2.4 billion a year to $600 million if it stopped providing health insurance to its employees, and paid the penalty instead.

Although companies like Verizon are now denying they’re even contemplating that course of action, records show otherwise. And what would the collapse of employer-sponsored health care mean for health care reform?

Only time will tell, but it’s probably not what President Obama had in mind.

STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO IMPROVE MD 27 IN CARROLL COUNTY

The State Highway Administration released the following:

STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO IMPROVE MD 27 IN CARROLL COUNTY
Additional Northbound MD 27 Lane and Intersection Improvements to Improve Safety and Traffic Flow

(May 7, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $2.4 million project to enhance MD 27 (Ridge Road) in Mt. Airy, Carroll County. SHA will also improve access to the existing 125 space ridesharing lot on MD 27 north of I-70. SHA anticipates completing the project in spring 2011, weather permitting.

In addition to the intersection improvements, SHA will extend the two through lane section of northbound MD 27 from Ridge Avenue to north of the Twin Arch Road/Park Avenue intersection.

MD 27 intersection at Twin Arch Road/Park Avenue:
• New dedicated right-turn lane from northbound MD 27 to Twin Arch Road;

MD 27 at Center Street:
• New dedicated left-turn lanes on northbound and southbound lanes of MD 27;

MD 27 ridesharing lot north of I-70:
• New dedicated right-turn lanes at entrance and exit of ridesharing lot;
• New dedicated left-turn lane on northbound MD 27 at ridesharing lot entrance;
• SHA will also extend the dedicated right-turn lane/acceleration lane from the ridesharing lot to Ridge Avenue;

SHA will resurface almost two miles of MD 27 between Ridge Avenue and north of Center Street to facilitate the intersection improvements. SHA will also construct ADA compliant sidewalk ramps at the Center Street and Twin Arch/Park Avenue intersections.

Motorists on MD 27 should expect single-lane closures Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and midnight to 5 a.m. Variable message signs, barrels, and temporary signs will guide motorists through the work zone. More than 18,000 vehicles travel along this section of MD 27 each day; motorists should expect delays.

SHA awarded the contract to F. O. Day Inc. of Rockville.

SHA encourages motorists to stay alert in work zones and slow down. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along MD 27, or other State numbered routes in Carroll County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.

The New York Times: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Will Resign as Labour Party Leader By September

The New York Times

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Will Resign as Labour Party Leader By September

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday that he will
resign -- but first hopes to broker a pact with the
third-place Liberal Democrats to keep his Labour Party in
office as part of a coalition government.

Brown said his Labour Party, which came a distant second in
Thursday's national election, would begin a leadership
contest to replace him as he focused on talks with the
Liberal Democrats aimed at breaking Britain's election
deadlock.

Brown's comments came as the Conservatives, who won the most
seats but not a majority, were already holding talks with the
Liberal Democrats. Some lawmakers said those talks had
stalled over differences on key issues, including reform of
the voting system.
