George Washington racks-up $300k in overdue library fines

Posted 5/10/10 by Carroll Eagle By Kevin Dayhoff

British Broadcasting Corp. is reporting that archivists in New York’s oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books.

It has been recently revealed that on Oct. 5, 1789, our nation’s first president, George Washington, borrowed two books from what was then the only library in Manhattan, the New York Society Library.

According to BBC, on Oct. 5, 1789, a time when New York City was serving as our nation’s capital, Washington borrowed the “Law of Nations,” a dissertation on international relations, and Vol. 12 of a collection of transcripts of debate transcripts from Britain's House of Commons.

Now this in itself may not be earth-shattering news. However there is a catch. ...

Science ponders 'zombie attack'

By Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent, BBC News

Zombie from I Spit on Your Rave (PA)
There has been a revival of the zombie film in recent years

If zombies actually existed, an attack by them would lead to the collapse of civilisation unless dealt with quickly and aggressively.

That is the conclusion of a mathematical exercise carried out by researchers in Canada.

They say only frequent counter-attacks with increasing force would eradicate the fictional creatures.

The scientific paper is published in a book - Infectious Diseases Modelling Research Progress.

In books, films, video games and folklore, zombies are undead creatures, able to turn the living into other zombies with a bite.

But there is a serious side to the work.

5 things you should know before dating a journalist

So, you’ve been eyeing that smart, attractive journalist you’re lucky enough to know personally. You’re intrigued. Your journalist is smart, funny, confident. Visions of Clark Kent taking off the glasses and ripping off his clothes to reveal a perfectly toned body in blue spandex coming to save you run through your head.
Who can blame you? Journalism is a sexy occupation.

But journalists aren’t like the bimbos you usually pick up at the bar. Nor are they the assholes you ladies continually fall for. No, journalists are different beings (which is why you’re attracted to them in the first place), and you should realize — before jumping in — that this isn’t going to be a run-of-the-mill, boring, lame relationship you’re used to.

Here’s what you need to know:

‘STATE’ OF DESPERATION: Why the Push to Bring Puerto Rico Into the Union?

Image Perhaps what is most troubling about a Congressional majority as heavy to one side of the political spectrum as it is now, is the fact that it enables—and apparently tempts—that majority to put power preservation ahead of service to the American people. No doubt, having far-left liberals in the White House and the two top seats in Congress had everything to do with the passage of a healthcare bill against the expressed will of the people this past March. And, as a result, those same liberals now know the clock is ticking on their majority, because voters are eager to express their discontent in November. According to Larry Pratt, the Executive Director of the Gun Owners of America (GOA), this is precisely why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is now leading a charge to... More Details...

YMCA Agrees to Expand One Facility, Trying to Sell Another

CitybizlistBaltimore: Y Agrees to Expand One Facility, Trying to Sell Another

The Y of Central Maryland has finalized a deal to expand and renovate its Carroll County Family Center Y location at 1719 Sykesville Road.

By expanding the current location, the Y estimates it will be able to serve an estimated 1,500 more people in Carroll County. The funding for the renovation and expansion will come as a result of an innovative partnership with The Powers Companies, a regional builder/developer that agreed to purchase the Y's building and property on Sykesville Road and then lease it back to the Y for 25 years, with renewal options.

Included in the agreement is funding for the renovation and improvements.

At the same time, the Y announced that it is actively seeking a buyer for the site of the former Westminster Inn on South Center Street, which the Y purchased from the Maryland School for the Blind in 2007. While the Y has utilized the Westminster Inn building since its purchase, the escalating estimates for renovation, coupled with the economic downturn, required the Y to reevaluate taking on the project at this time.

"We are delighted with this arrangement as it allows us to both improve services to existing members and at the same time bring our charitable mission to more residents of Carroll County, due to the expansion," said Ron Nawrot, Chair of the Y's Carroll County Community Advisory Board.

Renovations to the existing center are expected to begin over the summer and conclude by year-end, with the center remaining open throughout the project.

The expansion will add approximately 5,000 square feet to the existing 24,000 square foot center. Exact renovation and expansion details are still under development, but improvements under consideration include added multi-purpose spaces, family locker rooms, an expanded child play area, and expanded fitness space. Upon completion of the expansion and improvements to the Family Center, the building will be named the Hill Family Center Y in honor of long-time Y volunteers and supporters, Marty and Kelly Hill and the Hill family, Jennifer Hill-Bubczyk and Martin P. Hill, local developers and philanthropists.

"This expansion and renovation project is in keeping with our recently completed strategic plan, ‘A Healthy Y for a Healthier Central Maryland,' which calls for the Y to be a catalyst for a more connected community," said John Hoey, President and CEO of the Y of Central Maryland. "The project will not only modernize the center, but also uses space to encourage greater family and community interaction. We're thrilled with it."

"The Y of Central Maryland is a pillar of this community. The Powers Companies share the same values as the Y and we are proud to work with such a family- and community-focused organization," commented Mark Powers.

The Y of Central Maryland has served the residents of Carroll County since 1962.

Written by long-term wildlife biologist volunteer Leo reviewed and approved by the Sarawak (Malaysia) Forestry Department and directed by an amazing staff of Sarawakian wildlife orang experts.

I had an interesting conversation last week with someone about perceptions. A person came up to me and said: “I’ve been hearing that you’ve been seen at (insert establishment here) and frankly, we’re concerned.”

Baltimore Brew has posted a new item, 'Laid-off by the Sun, journalists speak
out on new wesbite'

by FERN SHEN

As The Baltimore Sun's music critic, Rashod D. Ollison wrote bitingly and
brilliantly about a wide range of musical genres, praising the sublime and
skewering the schlocky with equal verve.

But it's safe to say Ollison never wrote anything quite as scathing and personal
as "The Invisible Black Homo Blues, reflections on my time at the Sun."

The essay was one of many in a new website released today, featuring
mini-memoirs, poems, photographs and other work by ex-Sun writers who got the
axe a year ago, when The Sun fired a third of the newsroom staff.

"Telling Our Stories: the Days of the Baltimore Sun" was sponsored by The
Writer's Guild, East Foundation, and implemented with the collaboration of the
Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild. Following last April’s massive layoffs,
ex-Sun writers were offered fellowships to "to tell a story arising out of their
personal experiences during their time at The Baltimore Sun."

And some of them really cut loose......

Funeral service will be held at May 13 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home
By Kevin Dayhoff

On Saturday afternoon, the popular head teller at the New Windsor State Bank College Square branch in Westminster, Dawn Susan Buell, 51, stepped outside to enjoy a walk with her dog, when she was tragically struck and killed by a passing car.

Buell, a well-known longstanding bank employee in the Westminster community had previously worked at the old Carroll County Bank and Trust Co., before she went to work with New Windsor State Bank. She is fondly remembered as a people-person and an animal-lover, who planted flowers in the planters at the bank branch.

Dan Hartzler, the chair of the board of New Windsor State Bank said in phone interview on Monday, “the entire bank is at a loss. We are deeply saddened.”
