WHAT’S THE POINT OF HAVING TICKETS
IF THEY WON'T LET YOU IN THE DOOR?

By Regina Holmes

I wanted to write a rant on Monday about Artscape but I was still recovering from it. All the walking, the heat; the crowds, the heat; the sore feet, the heat; the overeating, the heat. Not that I'm complaining. I had a great time at Artscape. One of the biggest perks I've found about living in Mount Vernon is having the nation's largest free arts festival unfold around me. I went to multiple events on all three days, popping back home two or three times a day to make a pit stop, refuel and, in some cases, shower and change.

I was very excited about this year's Artscape and I have to say that overall I really enjoyed it. I'm awed by the sheer magnitude of the event; it's obvious an enormous amount of planning has to be done to pull off an affair of this size and scope. I was impressed by the variety of entertainment, food, and artwork, although there could have been a bit more diversity in the entertainment acts. (There were few if any Latino-flavored musical acts, for example, and no such dance performances.) A friend and I noted with humor that a Middle Eastern dance troupe performing at Penn Station was comprised (from what we saw) of all white women. I heard several great jazz bands, including the Craig Alston Quartet, which won the Chick Webb Jazz Combo Competition. I found the crowds to be in good spirits and upbeat; everyone seemed to be having a good time.

My experience was marred somewhat, however, by an incident on Sunday evening on the Wachovia stage, the main one, at Cathedral Street and Mount Royal Avenue.

I was not at the stage at the time; I had just returned home two blocks away around 7 p.m. to grab a quick bite before going to hear Wale at that stage. I wasn't familiar with the D.C.-based hip-hop artist (born of Nigerian-immigrant parents, whose real name is Olubowale Victor Folarin) but several friends had told me about him, so I thought I would check him out. I could hear the music and rapping very clearly from my balcony, which offers a bird's-eye view of the stage.

Suddenly I heard a rapper shouting the chorus: “We only f—k with real n—s!”

LANGUAGE SHOCKS, DISTURBS

Over and over again, he repeated the f-word and the n-word ad infinitum. I was shocked. Now, many rappers do use such language and if a fan chooses to buy a concert ticket or watch a video, that's his or her choice. But in a public venue at a city-sponsored, family-oriented event attended by many young children, blasting such offensive language on a sound system that could be heard blocks away was not only ill-advised but should not be tolerated... http://www.investigativevoice.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4987:reggies-rant-artscape&catid=25:the-project&Itemid=44

Rapper Wale Used Profanity At Artscape

Performer Used Profanity At Artscape

Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Anne Kramer

The City Office of Promotion and the Arts looking over its contract with a hip hop artist who used profanity on stage Sunday at the final performance of Artscape.

Wale used the "f" word and the "n" word during his song on the main stage.

Artscape officials say they heard it immediately but they didn't want to make the situation worse by stopping him.

Tracy Baskerville with the Office of Promotion and the Arts tells WBAL Radio that they are deeply disturbed by his words and apologetic to those who found them offensive.

Investigative Voice first reported the artist used those words during his performance.

About Today: 5 Ways to Cool off Your Laptop

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I'm pretty sure my laptop is trying to kill me. It is, as my mother used to say, hotter than the hinges outside right now, and yet my portable computer beast insists on trying to melt my skirt to my legs. I think we can all agree that this is unnecessary.

Is Your Laptop Too Hot?
How hot is too hot, though? Exactly when does your toasty laptop go from being the world's most annoying digital heating pad, and become an actual problem?

Why Do Laptops Overheat?
I can never figure out why my laptop gets so hot in the first place. It's not as if there's a tiny printing press in there, minting websites by the dozen.

5 Ways to Make a Hot Laptop Cooler
Before I read this piece, I assumed my only option was to put my laptop on pillow. It turns out, there's plenty you can do to cool it down.

8 Tips for Using Laptops in Hot Weather
The weather outside makes the weather under my laptop seem all the more unbearable. Fortunately, it turns out I don't need those ice-pack pants after all.

New Direction for any war: Send Service Vets over 60!

New Direction for any war: Send Service Vets over 60!

I am over 60 and the Armed Forces think I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 42 to join the military. They've got the whole thing ass-backwards. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 35.

For starters: Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.

Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. 'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry' We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while.

An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10 a..m. Old guys always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, 'I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.

If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.

Boot camp would be easier for old guys.. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training.

Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head...

These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way..

Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple of million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them..

***How about recruiting Women over 50 ...in menopause!!! You think Men have attitudes!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!!
If nothing else, put them on border patrol.... They will have it secured the first night!

Send this to all of your senior friends...it's in big type so they can read it

NewsBusters - Doocy: Blaming FNC for Sherrod Firing 'A Lie'

Rush Limbaugh Responds to JournoLister Wishing His Death

Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh has responded to reports that an NPR producer wrote gleefully about his death in an e-mail message to the now infamous JournoList.

As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, the Daily Caller's Jonathan Strong published some more of the liberal group's e-mail messages which included Sarah Spitz claiming that she would "Laugh loudly like a maniac and watch his eyes bug out" as Limbaugh writhed in torment.

With this in mind, both the Washington Examiner's Byron York and myself asked Limbaugh for a response to this nonsense.

Blaming Fox for Shirley Sherrod’s Firing 'a Lie,' Fox & Friends Host Declares

On Wednesday’s Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy took strong exception to the NAACP’s claim it was “snookered” by Fox News into denouncing former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod based on excerpts of a speech she delivered at a dinner in March.

“There’s a timeline problem,” Doocy pointed out, noting that the NAACP had on Monday night denounced Sherrod as “shameful,” the same day that she was pressured to quit her job (she says by the White House). But Fox News never mentioned the story until after Sherrod had quit. “So for anybody to say that Fox News pressured her out, that is simply a lie,” Doocy asserted.

NBC's Today Show Inaccurately Blames Fox News for Sherrod Firing

On Wednesday's Today show, Matt Lauer, Ann Curry and Savannah Guthrie left the impression that Fox News's criticism of Shirley Sherrod was the reason she lost her job at the Agriculture Department, with Lauer, in his interview with Sherrod, charging: "I don't know who to blame here, Miss Sherrod. I mean the, the, the activist who put forward this garbage in the first place has an agenda. We shouldn't be surprised by that. The cable news network that, that played this garbage on and on and talked about it, has an agenda. We shouldn't be surprised by that." But Lauer and NBC News, itself, revealed they have their own agenda, by failing to report, as the MRC's Rich Noyes pointed out, that Fox News didn't mention the Sherrod story until she had already left her job.

However, that didn't stop Curry from claiming, in the 8am half hour news brief, that: "After the video was used to vilify her on Fox television, she lost her job," and Guthrie advancing the NAACP's notion, in her piece, that they had been "snookered" by Fox News.

Limbaugh responds to JournoList death wish report

Limbaugh responds to JournoList death wish report

This morning I asked Rush Limbaugh what he thought of references to him on the private left-wing journalist discussion group JournoList. As reported in the Daily Caller, an NPR producer named Sarah Spitz wrote on JournoList that if she witnessed Limbaugh dying of a heart attack, she would “laugh loudly like a maniac and watch his eyes bug out.”

“I never knew I had this much hate in me,” Spitz wrote, according to the Daily Caller account. “But he deserves it.”

So I asked Limbaugh: What do you make of the fact that people in positions of influence on the Left don’t just want to see you fail, don’t just want to see you marginalized, but would actually like to witness you dying a painful death?

“Not having wished anyone dead, nor having fantasized about watching someone die, I cannot possibly relate to this,” Limbaugh responded.

At Washington Post, mum’s the word on JournoList

Is there a problem for the Washington Post? Potentially.

Since the paper employs JournoList’s founder and proprietor, and since comments on JournoList led to Weigel’s leaving the paper, and since those events raise questions about whether other Post journalists took part in JournoList, and since there are likely more stories to come from the thousands of still-unpublished exchanges on JournoList, it is reasonable to ask what the Post’s management knows, and what it knew in the past, about Post journalists taking part in the list-serv.

It’s reasonable to ask — but the Post isn’t going to answer.

A Free Pass for Fannie and Freddie

Kevin E. Dayhoff http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3874

Last Thursday the Obama Administration’s broad sweeping financial reform legislation edged past its final hurdle when the Senate approved the measure by a vote of 60-39.

The Consumer Protection and Regulatory Enhancement Act (H.R. 3310) is now on its way to the White House and awaits the gleeful left-handed signature of President Barack Obama.

The bill, touted by several news accounts as “ushering in the broadest overhaul of financial regulation since the Great Depression,” received almost complete opposition from Republicans who voted 38-3 against it. Democrats supported it by a vote of 57-1.

In May, The New York Times quoted Mr. Obama as saying: “The recession we’re emerging from was primarily caused by a lack of responsibility and accountability from Wall Street to Washington. That’s why I made passage of Wall Street reform one of my top priorities as president, so that a crisis like this does not happen again.”
