To make matters worse, recently the weather has been frightfully cold; making matters that more unbearable.

It was 40 years ago that one local community leader got his start, and made the news. The now-defunct newspaper, the Community Reporter, carried an article Dec. 11, 1970, noting that "Richard N. Dixon, 32 years of age and the first black to assume a post on the Carroll County School Board, was sworn into office last week."

On Nov. 4, Anderson Cooper did the country a favor. He expertly deconstructed on his CNN show the bogus rumor that President Obama’s trip to Asia would cost $200 million a day. This was an important “story.” It underscored just how far ahead of his time Mark Twain was when he said a century before the Internet, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” But it also showed that there is an antidote to malicious journalism — and that’s good journalism.

In case you missed it, a story circulated around the Web on the eve of President Obama’s trip that it would cost U.S. taxpayers $200 million a day — about $2 billion for the entire trip. Cooper said he felt impelled to check it out because the evening before he had had Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, a Republican and Tea Party favorite, on his show and had asked her where exactly Republicans will cut the budget.

Instead of giving specifics, Bachmann used her airtime to inject a phony story into the mainstream. She answered: “I think we know that just within a day or so the president of the United States will be taking a trip over to India that is expected to cost the taxpayers $200 million a day. He’s taking 2,000 people with him. He’ll be renting over 870 rooms in India, and these are five-star hotel rooms at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Santa Claus is coming to Westminster on a Westminster fire department fire engine.

In a greatly anticipated holiday treat, courtesy of the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Company No.1, Santa Claus will once again be roaming Westminster area neighborhoods on a fire engine, beginning this coming Monday, December 13.

Santa will be leaving the fire station each evening 6 p.m., December 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th. A rain date has also been set for December 17.

According to a press release on the Westminster fire department’s website, http://www.westminstervfd.org/, the department will not post a neighborhood schedule this year. In the past, fires and other emergencies have caused the schedule to be changed too often.

“Just listen for the sirens and you will see jolly ole Saint Nick. WFD promises that we will make every effort to bring Santa down your street.”

Santa has also been scheduled to visit the fire station for the department’s annual Christmas breakfast. The breakfast will begin at 6 a.m. and continue throughout the morning on Saturday December 18, 2010. Santa will arrive at 8 a.m., according to Lt. Josh Evans, a spokesperson in Mr. Claus’ office.

He is scheduled to appear on one of Westminster's antique fire trucks, and “wants to have his picture taken with you,” according to the department’s website.

Guardian: MasterCard and Visa attacked after restricting dealings with WikiLeaks – and hackers say Twitter is next

It is, according to one breathless blogger, "the first great cyber war", or as those behind it put it more prosaically: "The major shitstorm has begun."

The technological and commercial skirmishes over WikiLeaks escalated into a full-blown online assault yesterday when, in a serious breach of internet security, a concerted online attack by activist supporters of WikiLeaks succeeded in disrupting MasterCard and Visa.

The acts were explicitly in "revenge" for the credit card companies' recent decisions to freeze all payments to the site, blaming illegal activity. Though it initially would acknowledge no more than "heavy traffic on its external corporate website", MasterCard was forced to admit last night that it had experienced "a service disruption to the MasterCard directory server", which banking sources said meant disruption throughout its global business... http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/dec/08/wikileaks-visa-mastercard-operation-payback

A worldwide dispute overWikiLeaks' release of classified information raged online Wednesday like a tale from a comic book: The Jester battled a hacker network calling itself Anonymous that claimed responsibility for taking down the websites of several major corporations.

Anonymous took credit for disabling the main websites for MasterCard and Visa, among several attacks launched against companies that in recent days announced they would no longer handle donations to WikiLeaks.

Cyber attacks also were reported against an attorney representing two Swedish women who have accused WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of sexual assault, as well as on PostFinance, the financial arm of the Swiss postal system that closed Assange's account after accusing him of providing false information.

Amazon and PayPal also have been targeted.

Meanwhile the Jester has claimed responsibility for taking down WikiLeaks' website several times since it posted its first batch of confidential State Department cables on Nov. 29. Smaller government, term limits, lower property taxes and a resistance of unfunded mandates from state and federal government — these are a few of "10 Governing Philosophies" unveiled Wednesday by the newly-elected Board of County Commissioners at a press conference in Westminster.

Also on the list: prayer before each board meeting, no more county cars for commissioners and promise to converse with constituents in "plain English."

“It is important for us to set a direction, and we have worked collectively on this," said Commissioner Doug Howard, who represents the 5th Commissioner District in Sykesville and Eldersburg.

Howard said the commissioner board — which has no incumbents and is the first-ever in Carroll County with five members elected by district — wanted to express its philosophies to set a tone for the new term. The board was sworn into office Monday.

"These philosophies will serve as a framework from which to govern," said Howard, "(and are) the product of our collective understanding of the will and the desire of the citizens." ...

At Wednesday's event, each of the five commissioners took a turn announcing two of the principles. In addition to Howard, those taking part were Robin Frazier (1st District-Manchester/Taneytown), Haven Shoemaker (2nd-Hampstead/Finksburg), Dave Roush (3rd-Westminster) and Richard Rothschild (4th-Mount Airy/New Windsor). All are Republicans.

On Monday, Carroll County’s first five-member Board of Commissioners took the oath of office: Robin Frazier, Haven Shoemaker, Dave Rous, Richard Rothschild, and Doug Howard.

All are Republicans. Only Ms. Frazier has served in the commissioners’ office before, for one term, 1998 to 2002.

After a long and stormy commissioner election campaign, it took only 15 minutes for history to be made as the 59th Board of Carroll County Commissioners was sworn into office.

It will be interesting to see how well this county government functions with five instead of three commissioners. Are five heads better than three?

Taxes, waste-to-energy, the airport, police protection, and the economy are some of the many leftovers the new commissioners will find on their plates.

For dessert, the commissioners have available the preservation of the business of agriculture and increasing employment in Carroll County so that the 62% of the work force doesn’t need to leave the county every work day in the pursuit of meaningful employment.

Barrels of ink and antacid have been spilled on the discussions over the five-district, five-commissioner form of government along with hand wringing, gnashing of teeth, food-fights of kindergarten proportions and close encounters of the third grade.
