In an effort to decrease costs and increase efficiency, the City of Westminster is battling snow and freezing accumulation with a new liquid salt treatment.

Briefly discussed at Monday’s Common Council Meeting, Department of Public Works Director Jeffrey Glass explained that the liquid treatment is already being used by the state of Maryland and in other states as well.

Glass explained that the the traditional salt granules, spread by salt trucks during storms, often scatter off the roadway, ending up on shoulders and in gutters, which is both wasteful and bad for the environment.

Glass said there are several benefits to the liquid salt solution, one being that the liquid treatment stays on the road. Additionally, the roads can be pre-treated with the liquid solution, up to 48 hours before accumulation begins, which could reduce worker hours once a storm has started.

“If we can treat in advance, it could prevent that initial adhesion to the road surface,” Glass added.

1. ABC Fuels Myth Discourse Caused Shooting, Sawyer Astounded by Falling Support for Gun Control
“The country is pretty unified behind the idea that President Obama found the right words, the right tone at the right time,” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos announced Monday night in touting how a new ABC News/Washington Post poll found “78 percent approve of how he handled” the Tucson shooting, in contrast to Sarah Palin, “not so much, only 30 percent approve of her response.” When Stephanopoulos noted “the support for stricter gun control has dropped over the last few years,” anchor Diane Sawyer expressed astonishment: “Stricter has dropped?” Instead of detailing that trend, Stephanopoulos concentrated on some specific policies with overwhelming support. The ABC duo ignored how their poll advanced a false media narrative in asking: “As you may know, a gunman shot a U.S. Congress member and 18 other people in Arizona late last week. Is it your impression that the political discourse in this country did or did not contribute to this incident?”
2. A Week After Tucson, NY Times Still Sees 'Right Wing' Ideas From Loughner
The New York Times twice attributed Tucson shooter Jared Loughner's nutty views to "right-wing extremist groups" - yet failed to call his 9-11 Truth beliefs or loathing of President Bush leftist or liberal: "He became an echo chamber for stray ideas, amplifying, for example, certain grandiose tenets of a number of extremist right-wing groups - including the need for a new money system and the government's mind-manipulation of the masses through language."
3. Washington Post Hypes Anti-Giffords Vitriol in Arizona, Blurs Over Liberal Death Threat
Nine days after the Tucson shooting, the front page of The Washington Post kept relentlessly recycling the debunked view that “vitriol” was the real cause of Jared Loughner’s Safeway shooting spree. Post reporters in Arizona played up the 2010 campaign and played down a death threat from a liberal Tucson shooting victim.
4. Matthews to Michael Steele: Aren't White Republicans Still Afraid of Black People?
MSNBC's Chris Matthews honored Martin Luther King Jr. Day by accusing white Republicans of being afraid of black people. During a Monday night Hardball special called "Obama's America," Matthews insultingly asked former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele if, at GOP conventions, black-Americans at those events were told not to "bunch up" because "you'll scare these people" and added: "Did you fear that if you got together with some other African-Americans these white guys might get scared of you?" Steele, who was the only Republican on the panel, seemed shocked by the question as he responded to Matthews: "No! What are you talking about?" and then proceeded to cite the successful candidacies of Tim Scott, Allen West and others in the GOP field that would suggest white Republicans weren't exactly afraid of, as Matthews put it, "black folk hanging together."
5. Chris Matthews Slams 'Older White People' for Still Having a 'Problem' with Obama
Appearing on MSNBC, Monday, to promote his new special on Barack Obama, Chris Matthews attacked "older white people" for still holding bigoted feelings against the first African American President. Lavishing praise on younger Americans, he added, "And I think that's a generalization and I'll stick with it. I think younger people do not see race as an obstacle." He then touted the "non-judgmental" attitude of Obama voters, fawning, "In fact, they say [race is] irrelevant and don't even notice it, whereas older people notice it all the time."
6. Twice in 24 Hours, ABC IDs Michael Reagan as 'Conservative,' Ignores Ron Jr Being a Liberal
For the second time in less than 24 hours, ABC identified Michael Reagan as a "conservative," but failed to identify the left-wing ideology of Ron Reagan Jr. Monday's Good Morning America played up the "clash" between the adopted son Michael and Ron, author of a new book that claims his father, the 40th president, had Alzheimer's during his time in the White House.

Phil Grout’s exhibition at Birdie's Cafe Gallery in Westminster ended on January 2, 2011 after a well-received two-month showing.

Grout, an award-winning photojournalist, fine art photographer appeared for the opening of a retrospective show of his work on November 5, 2010 at Birdie's Café 233 East Main Street, Westminster, MD  http://www.birdiescoffee.com/

Birdie’s Café, at 233 East Main Street, in Westminster will kick off the art and culture scene in Carroll County for the New Year with an exhibition entitled “Lucky 13” featuring the artists of Off Track Art, a co-op of local Carroll County artists, for the months of January and February 2011. 

The 13 partners of Off Track Artists will have a reception for the exhibition at Birdie’s Café on the 13th day after Christmas, Friday, January 7, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  In the event winter weather closes Carroll County Public Schools that day, the reception will be held the following evening. 

Off Track Art is an artists’ co-op and gallery located in the lower level of the historic Liberty Building at 11 Liberty Street in downtown Westminster.  The co-op is dedicated to advancing the arts in Westminster and Carroll County, as well as the careers, ideas, and artistic visions of its partners.

“Lucky 13” By Off Track Art will feature the work of Kevin Dayhoff, Mary E. Decker, Gail Elwell, Judy Goodyear, Phil Grout, Charlotte Laslo, C.Z. Sawdey, Carolyn Seabolt, Linda Van Hart, Robert J. Waddell, Gordon Wickes, and Pam Zappardino.

More than 100 members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees came to Annapolis on Wednesday to lobby the 428th General Assembly for their No. 1 priority: preserving the health and pension benefits they have.

Before the session began at noon on Wednesday, union members from throughout the state filed into a public lounge in the House Office Building. AFSCME staff handed out green hats and scarves to the union members, as they signed onto a sheet with their names and legislative districts. Once they signed in, they sat at tables organized by district number and prepared to visit their newly elected representatives.

AFSCME is the largest union for state employees. Legislative director Sue Esty said that with several proposals circulating to make cuts in pension and health benefits – as well as recent furloughs, pay cuts and hiring freezes – the union members want to make sure they set the right tone for this General Assembly session.

Recent deliberations and recommendations from the Public Employees’ and Retirees’ Benefits Sustainability Commission galvanized the union members and spurred them into action. The eight-member commission created by legislation last year is recommending that the General Assembly cut state costs of health insurance 10% by hiking premiums and reducing coverage for state employees and retirees, and shift half the costs of teacher pensions to local school boards over the next three to five years.

At Wednesday’s rally, correctional officer Greg Currie, who works at the Metropolitan Transition Center in Baltimore, said he has attended pension commission meetings – even testifying about retirement benefits at a public hearing. Currie said that he just wants to see pensions and health care stay the same. He has written to his representatives in the General Assembly about the issue, and is hopeful that they will make a careful decision.

Now that the hangover from last November’s Maryland General Election is becoming a memory, and Marylanders have begun to put away the Christmas lights and joined a local gym to shed those holiday pounds, many are beginning to set their sights on January 12, the beginning of the 2011 session of the Maryland General Assembly.
