Obama proposes raising taxes on the wealthy to pay for $447 billion jobs bill

By David Nakamura 09/12/2011

President Obama would fund his $447 billion plan to create jobs largely by raising taxes on wealthier families, White House aides said Monday after the president again called on Congress to support the package.

During a Rose Garden appearance, Obama pledged to send Congress the American Jobs Act on Monday evening when the legislative body resumes its session. Aides revealed for the first time that the plan will include limits on itemized deductions for individuals who earn more than $200,000 a year and families that earn more than $250,000.

Obama has proposed similar tax hikes on the wealthy in the past, but they were rejected by Congress.

[…]

The cost of the jobs plan would be in addition to the $1.5 trillion that a bipartisan congressional “supercommittee” is tasked with finding to reduce the country’s spiraling deficit. However, the administration said that it is open to other ways to pay for its proposal. If the committee settles on a plan to reduce the deficit by the $1.5 trillion and also the amount of Obama’s jobs package, the tax hikes will not longer take effect, White House officials said.

Len Lazarick - MarylandReporter.com: Hurricane impacts redistricting hearings

Hurricane impacts redistricting hearings

Maryland congressional districts
This map from the Department of Planning shows population growth during the last decade in the state's eight current congressional districts.
Former Delegate Jim King put on a suit and tie for the redistricting hearings in Annapolis and Columbia Tuesday.

In both venues, more Republicans than Democrats chose to testify, perhaps because they recognized that redistricting in Maryland has tended to hurt Republicans and favor Democrats.

The five-member advisory committee appointed by O’Malley is chaired by his patronage chief Jeanne Hitchcock and includes Senate President Mike Miller, House Speaker Mike Busch, and Richard Stewart, a businessman who chaired the governor’s reelection campaign in Prince George’s County. All are Democrats except for King.

They are supposed to recommend a congressional redistricting map in September and a legislative redistricting map in December. There will be a special session of the General Assembly in October to enact the congressional map.

The Annapolis hearing kicked off with a harangue from Brian Griffiths, president of the Maryland Young Republicans, who complained about the hearing’s timing and called the current congressional district maps “disgraceful.”

Republican Bob Turner won in an upset Tuesday in a special congressional election, claiming a New York City seat that has been held by Democrats since the 1920s. Turner, a 70-year-old former cable TV executive with no experience in elected office, ran a conservative campaign against President Obama's handling of the economy and, in a district with a large Jewish vote, opposing the president's support of Palestinian statehood.

Conservative Byte: Krugman ‘Crucified’ Over 9/11 ‘Occasion For Shame’ Remarks

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman’s choice to use the September 11 attacks as an opportunity to criticize former President George W. Bush and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, among others, has triggered some sharp responses from conservatives and liberals, alike.
Village Voice writer Nick Greene compared Krugman’s post to “an angst-riddled teenager’s Facebook status update,” rather than a legitimate piece from a New York Times columnist. And this was one of the more complimentary criticisms.
