Baltimore football and Westminster have a long history together By Kevin Dayhoff

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the team will not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com, Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football and Westminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949, "College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year."

No Picnic in The Park or Congress

Kevin E. Dayhoff

If you are of the mind that our current session of Congress is mendacious, hapless and incompetent, you may take solace in the knowledge that an 1861 joint committee makes the recent ineffectual “Super Committee” – or other committees formed to conduct congressional investigations in recent memory – seem like Romper Room in comparison.

December 9th and 10th marked the 150th anniversary of one of the most powerful and controversial committees ever empanelled by Congress – The Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War.

For those who are reading this from Central Maryland and Northern Virginia, much of the history of the origins of this committee began after the First Battle of Bull Run or First Manassas, on July 21, 1861, which took place in nearby Prince William County, VA." ... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4801

Pop stars like Ke$ha use vocal fry to drop their voices down into lower notes. Researchers say the croaky sounds are becoming more prevalent in college-aged women's speech.
By Melissa Dahl
The influence of pop singers like Britney Spears and Ke$ha may actually be changing the way some young women speak, suggests a (small) new study.
The report, recently published online in the Journal of Voice, examines the prevalence of a speech pattern called "vocal fry," the creaky, rough, guttural sound that pop singers sometimes use to slip into lower notes. Nassima Abdelli-Beruh, one of the study authors (along with Lesley Wolk and Dianne Slavin) and a speech scientist at Long Island University, describes the sound like "rattled, popping air." NPR's Yuki Noguchi and Lynn Neary completely omitted Jon Corzine's Democratic affiliation on Thursday's All Things Considered, while mentioning practically every other prominent occupation he has held- Goldman Sachs CEO, senator, governor, even 'multimillionaire.' On the other hand, Noguchi gave the Republican party ID of two representatives who questioned Corzine at a recent hearing." http://www.mrc.org/biasalert/2011/20111209045024.aspx

Billionaire investor Leon Cooperman made public his letter to the President, in which he calls for Obama to end his class warfare rhetoric and appeal to all voters today. Cooperman, below, makes the point that the President’s comments are divisive at a time we can least afford it. The chairman of Omega Advisors was a one-time Goldman Sachs asset management chief.

The Tax Man Cometh by Bill O'Reilly

Dec 10, 2011

This week Caesar came for me, demanding my tax obligation. As a 1 percenter, my burden was substantial, but I'm not whining. I love my country and understand it needs money to fulfill its obligations. So the check is in the mail.

Thirty-five years ago, I was broke, having just graduated from Boston University with a master's degree in broadcast journalism. I was lucky enough to get hired as a reporter in Scranton, Pa., at $150 a week. One problem: I couldn't pay my rent on that. So I picked up an additional $80 a month writing dopey gag lines for "Uncle Ted's Ghoul School," a Saturday night monster fright fest. Stuff like: "Listen, Drac, here's what's at stake."

247WallSt.com: Cities That Have Fired Their Police Forces

Cities That Have Fired Their Police Forces

On December 1, Youngtown, Ariz., joined the ranks of the many U.S. cities and towns that have fired their local police forces. In recent years, it has become somewhat of a trend across the country for municipalities to disband police departments, most often due to financial restrictions. 24/7 Wall St. has identified six cities and towns that have completely dissolved their local law enforcement groups.
Using information from the National Fraternal Order of Police and conversations with a number of police departments, 24/7 found nearly 50 cities and towns that either considered dismantling or have already dismantled their police forces in the past four years. 24/7 also received help from Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office — a department that has taken over law enforcement responsibilities for 16 police forces in the country. The initial list was cut down to include only the largest municipalities and the most recent cases of police force termination... http://247wallst.com/2011/12/13/cities-that-have-fired-their-police-forces/?utm_source=247WallStDailyNewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=DEC132011A&utm_campaign=DailyNewsletter

Union says Westminster police misspending money

Union says Westminster police misspending money

Funds used for iPads, iPhones for commanders, union alleges

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/breaking/bs-md-ca-westminster-police-funds-20111212,0,7044577.story

By Peter Hermann, The Baltimore Sun

8:00 p.m. EST, December 12, 2011

Rank-and-file police officers are accusing the small department in Westminster of misspending money seized from drug suspects by buying iPads and iPhones for top commanders.

The Carroll County Fraternal Order of Police, through a Baltimore law firm it hired, also alleges in a news release that department leaders have pressured officers to work extra-duty shifts at Walmart, sometimes at the expense of patrolling city streets.

"We're looking for answers," said Gary McLhinney, a labor negotiator for Schlachman, Belsky and Weiner, a firm that represents police labor unions around the state. "Morale has clearly suffered because of the impression that the bosses are getting all the perks while the rank and file are left cleaning up the mess."

Westminster's mayor and police chief denied some of the allegations, such as requiring officers to work overtime at Walmart, and declined to comment on others, saying they wanted to confer with the city attorney before commenting publicly.

Mayor Kevin R. Utz, a retired 28-year veteran of the Maryland State Police, questioned the motive of the union's law firm, calling it "one of their steps to get the city to agree to collective bargaining," which the city of Westminster has refused to do. The Carroll County FOP represents the Westminster force on legal and civil matters.

"Clearly, someone disagrees with the manner in which some of the forfeiture funds have been spent," said Westminster Police Chief Jeffrey Spaulding, declining to confirm, as the law firm alleges, that he and his top commanders — a major and three captains — have iPhones or iPads purchased with funds collected as part of criminal forfeitures… http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/breaking/bs-md-ca-westminster-police-funds-20111212,0,7044577.story

MAGGIE HABERMAN - Politico: Gingrich says he will stay relentlessly positive

Gingrich says he'll stay 'relentlessly positive' By MAGGIE HABERMAN

Newt Gingrich vowed this afternoon to stay "relentlessly positive" as Fight Night looms in Iowa, as he talked to the roughly 200 people crammed into his recently-opened Urbandale headquarters for a kick-off event.

But Gingrich also drew a distinction between "attack ads" that are distortive of records, and contrasts about differences, which he said are different, and acceptable.

"We should focus on solutions," Gingrich said, adding that the discussion has to be "positive" or the nominee will never be strong enough to take on President Obama… http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2011/12/gingrich-says-hell-stay-relentlessly-positive-106763.html
