Iowa caucuses reveal media lapses

By MARTIN SCHRAM Scripps Howard News Service

Monday, January 9, 2012

Iowa's 2012 Republican caucuses gave us either two winners or no winners at all, as in Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum virtually tied and Ron Paul finished just a whisker behind them.

And in the only total that really matters, but was little mentioned, all three received seven of Iowa's Republican convention delegates.

But America's inexplicably traditional first voting told us something important, not really about those running for president but about those of us who cover them: When we don't really report, you can't really decide.

First, recall the wall-to-wall news coverage of Iowa's meaningless (except for political party money-making) Republican straw poll last August.

As all the pols and their handlers learned decades ago, you can win it by spending more money to bus in and feed more of your own people who will vote for you. Last August, Michele Bachmann won.

Tuesday night, she finished last among Iowa's real caucus combatants.

Second, we turn to what Americans most need from the news media: our journalistic skill and determination to go far beyond what the candidates are emphasizing to make the sale with voters.

At least by examining their past deeds as deeply as we covered that meaningless straw poll.

1936 presidential election: Landon in a Landslide: The Poll That Changed Polling

Retrieved January 10, 2012 http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5168

The 1936 presidential election proved a decisive battle, not only in shaping the nation’s political future but for the future of opinion polling. The Literary Digest, the venerable magazine founded in 1890, had correctly predicted the outcomes of the 1916, 1920, 1924, 1928, and 1932 elections by conducting polls.

These polls were a lucrative venture for the magazine: readers liked them; newspapers played them up; and each “ballot” included a subscription blank.

The 1936 postal card poll claimed to have asked one fourth of the nation’s voters which candidate they intended to vote for. In Literary Digest's October 31 issue, based on more than 2,000,000 returned post cards, it issued its prediction: Republican presidential candidate Alfred Landon would win 57 percent of the popular vote and 370 electoral votes…http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5168

FDR introduces the lend-lease program — History.com This Day in History — 1/10/1941:

"On this day in 1941, Franklin Roosevelt introduces the lend-lease program to Congress. The plan was intended to help Britain beat back Hitler's advance while keeping America only indirectly involved in World War II.

As Roosevelt addressed Congress, the Battle of Britain was in its full destructive swing and Hitler seemed on the verge of invading Great Britain. The cash-strapped Brits desperately needed airplanes, tanks and ships to fight Hitler's imminent invasion. For months, Britain's prime minister, Winston Churchill, had begged Roosevelt for help, but the president was committed to abiding by Americans' wishes to stay out of another bloody world war." ... http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/fdr-introduces-the-lend-lease-program

Will Glyndon Mail Service End in Three Weeks?

"The neighborhood has been in an enormous state of panic," says a community leader. Residents are set to meet with U.S. Postal Service officials tonight.

January 9, 2011 By Marc Shapiro

The future of mail service for many Glyndon residents is uncertain with general mail delivery to the town’s post office due to stop Jan. 30. Most Glyndon residents receive their mail at the post office rather than through home delivery.

“The neighborhood has been in an enormous state of panic as to what is going to happen,” said Kathy Ziese, president of Historic Glyndon, Inc.

The son of Quaker parents, Nixon grew up in the southern California city of Yorba Linda. Early on he proved himself to be a stellar student, attending Whittier College and graduating from Duke University Law School with honors. Nixon then joined the Navy and served during World War II as a lieutenant commander in the Pacific theater. After the war, he gravitated toward Republican politics, joining the post-war anti-communist crusade.

In 1950, Nixon ran against Democrat Helen Gahagan Douglas for a seat in the House of Representatives for California, earning the less-than-complimentary nickname Tricky Dick during the campaign for his ruthless red-baiting of his opponent, including alleging that Douglas was pink down to her panties. He won and gained national attention when, as a member of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), Nixon relentlessly grilled Alger Hiss, a Roosevelt New Deal liberal and former secretary general of the United Nations, at a hearing regarding allegations that Hiss facilitated communist infiltration of the U.S. government. Hiss, legally immune from espionage charges, was later convicted of perjury. The conviction, despite Hiss' denial of any wrongdoing, equaled an admission of guilt in the eyes of hard-line anti-communists. Largely due to his record of relentlessness in combating communism, Nixon earned the vice-presidential spot on the Republican ticket with Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952.

Early on in his career, Nixon was shadowed by allegations of accepting inappropriate campaign funding from big business and the Mafia. During his 1952 vice-presidential campaign, Nixon tried to dispel those accusations in what became known as the Checkers speech. The name was derived from a dog, named Checkers, that was given to his daughter by a corporate supporter. Playing on sentiment for his little girl, Nixon adamantly vowed to keep the dog. Americans charmed by Nixon's heart-warming, seemingly old-fashioned values helped vote the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket into the White House.

On the whole, though, Nixon did not owe his success in politics to personality or charm; in fact, some staunch supporters described him as cold, aloof, crude, arrogant and paranoid. Even Eisenhower claimed that his vice president would never win the presidency because the people don't like him. In 1968, Nixon proved his former boss wrong, but left the office in disgrace in 1974… http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/richard-m-nixon-is-born?catId=9

Airman from Westminster is killed in Afghanistan By Steve Kilar, The Baltimore Sun

Airman from Westminster is killed in Afghanistan

January 07, 2012|By Steve Kilar, The Baltimore Sun

A 24-year-old airman from Westminster was killed when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said Saturday.

Airman 1st Class Matthew R. Seidler died Thursday in the attack, which killed two other airmen. They were patrolling in Helmand, a southwestern province that remains a Taliban stronghold.

"When he joined the Air Force, he blossomed. He became himself," said a cousin, Kalyn Masek, who last communicated with Seidler on Tuesday, his birthday. "I was really, really proud of him and the man that he'd become."

Seidler, an explosive ordnance disposal technician, entered active duty in November 2009. He was assigned to the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

"He loved what he did" for the military, said Masek, who was surprised when Seidler told her that he was joining the Air Force. Being involved in the disarmament of explosives fed his intellect, she said, and excited him in a way that prior false starts in his professional life had not.

Seidler graduated from Westminster Senior High School in 2006. He took classes for a year in business administration at Stevenson University and then started in a multimedia design program at Carroll Community College before deciding to join the military.

"He was extremely smart," said longtime friend Bryan Vana, who'd known Seidler since middle school. Vana said … http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-01-07/news/bs-md-ca-airman-killed-20120107_1_seidler-explosive-ordnance-disposal-technician-airman

We greet 2012 while enduring the beginning of the fifth year of an economic malaise.

Yes, I am well aware that the National Bureau of Economic Research determined that our current recession began December 2007 and was over in June 2009.

Yeah right – tell that to Main Street.

The politics of roads, growth and development, recessions and the cyclical boom and bust of agriculture has always played a prominent role in the history of Carroll County.

The reasons for forming our own county in 1837 were many, but among them was inadequate attention by Annapolis to our road infrastructure and inadequate control over local land use and economics.

Although many may consider the politics of Annapolis to be truly foreign; just as today, many of the difficulties in our history have been a result of national and international economic dynamics from outside of Carroll County – and Maryland… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0108-20120105,0,5395525.story
