Don Surber commentary: Rush apologizes

Rush apologizes

March 3, 2012 by Don Surber

Do I get result or not? Forget boycotts and the like, when I speak Rush Limbaugh listens. I called on him at 7 AM to apologize.

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress…

[…]

What happened was simple: He tried to use a lefty way to counter what a lefty did. He tried to demonize her like the left did with Sarah Palin but he could not get away with that because…

[…]

The Left will not forgive or forget this incident which means, of course, absolutely nothing. It does not matter if they accept the apology. Let them chatter among themselves. Let them distort what he says because heaven forbid if the Left accurately quoted him. Really, who cares what people on the Left think?

But fairness required an apology. It matters what we conservatives think about him and about ourselves.

Boehner: Obama Wants Lower Gas Prices, ‘At Least For Election Day’

(CNSNews.com) – Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he is not sure whether President Barack Obama agrees with his Energy Secretary’s goal to keep gas prices high, but he does think the president is in favor of lower prices, “at least for election day.”

During a press briefing on Thursday at the Capitol, Boehner was asked if he thinks Obama’s energy policies are intended to drive up oil prices, as some of Boehner’s fellow Republicans have implied.

“Well, with Secretary [Steven] Chu, who’s made it pretty clear that his goal is to have higher energy prices, I think that’s what a lot of our members were cueing off of,” Boehner said.

“I’m not sure that the president believes that higher energy prices are what he wants,” said Boehner. “And clearly after my discussion with him yesterday, I think he would prefer to see lower gas prices -- at least for Election Day.”

[…]

During his press conference Boehner noted that gas prices have doubled since the president has been in office, and said Republicans had worked to lower gasoline prices by supporting, for instance, the Keystone XL pipeline.

Romney’s luck - The Washington Post By Charles Krauthammer

Romney’s luck - The Washington Post: By Charles Krauthammer, Published: March 1 http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/romneys-luck/2012/03/01/gIQAodiZlR_story.html?wpisrc=nl_opinions

It’s been a wild ride, but the story line of the Republican race remains remarkably simple and constant: It’s Mitt Romney and the perishable pretenders.

Five have come and gone, if you count the Donald’s aborted proto-candidacy. And now the sixth and most plausibly presidential challenger just had his moment — and blew it in Michigan.

It’s no use arguing that Rick Santorum won nearly as many Michigan delegates as Romney. He lost the state. Wasn’t Santorum claiming a great victory just three weeks ago when he shockingly swept Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado — without a single convention delegate being selected? ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/romneys-luck/2012/03/01/gIQAodiZlR_story.html?wpisrc=nl_opinions

POLITICS NEWS ALERT

Rush Limbaugh apologizes to Georgetown law student for insulting her

Conservative talk show host posted the apology on his Web site: "... I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke," wrote Rush Limbaugh, who on Friday vilified student Sandra Fluke for her public support of health plans that cover the cost of contraceptives.

Olympia Snowe: Why I’m leaving the Senate - The Washington Post

Olympia Snowe: Why I’m leaving the Senate - The Washington Post: "By Olympia J. Snowe, Published: March 1

Olympia J. Snowe is a Republican senator from Maine.

Two truths are all too often overshadowed in today’s political discourse: Public service is a most honorable pursuit, and so is bipartisanship.

I have been immeasurably honored to serve the people of Maine for nearly 40 years in public office and for the past 17 years in the United States Senate. It was incredibly difficult to decide that I would not seek a fourth term in the Senate." ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/olympia-snowe-why-im-leaving-the-senate/2012/03/01/gIQApGYZlR_story.html?tid=pm_opinions_pop

"Andrew Breitbart, the outspoken conservative media publisher and pundit has died at age 43. A message posted on Breitbart.tv announced Breitbart’s death “with a terrible feeling of pain and loss,” saying that he died of natural causes shortly after midnight in Los Angeles. “We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior,” the statement said. Breitbart's media sites trumpeted controversial investigations that led to the resignations of former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner and former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod. He also was a former editor for the Drudge Report and helped launch The Huffington Post website, MSNBC reported."

September 1, 2008

On opening day of the Republican National Convention I took the opportunity to visit the print media news centers. They were large and complicated partitioned beehives of activity with what seemed to be miles of wires everywhere. When I stopped by the Washington Post news center, I found well-known blogger Andrew Breitbart (
www.breitbart.com) and his business partner Larry Solov.

Mr. Breitbart was in make-up getting ready for a guest appearance on a Post news video… He was quite friendly and talkative and appeared to having the time of his life.

ST. PAUL—His name may sound unfamiliar, but Andrew Breitbart has built a career helping to create the Drudge Report and the Huffington Post, while also overseeing his own news-aggregation site breitbart.com—and becoming prominent in a largely underground movement of conservatives in Hollywood. Next week he plans to launch a new site (
www.breitbart.com/bighollywood) that will give voice to this rogue community in the entertainment industry.

[…]

We had just left the National Review party and were headed to the National Journal party. At both events, the Los Angeles-based Mr. Breitbart, who is 39 and the father of four children, was the only person not wearing a blazer. “No matter how hard I try, I don’t fit in at these things.”

So he claims. Before we left, the pundit Jonah Goldberg accused him of being the most popular guy in the room.

At the National Journal party, publisher David Bradley was delighted to finally put a face to the name. “That’s Andrew Breitbart?” he exclaimed. Walking into the Weekly Standard party, a friend from L.A. greeted him. “Have you had a chance to take a shower yet?” joked Steve McEveety, who is Mel Gibson’s producing partner.

Bates proposes to cut budgets of agencies with repeat audit problems

Cutting the budgets of agencies that have problems with waste, poor policies, and lack of adequate controls will spur them to fix the problems more quickly, said Del. Gail Bates, R-Howard. Bates, a new member of the Joint Audit Committee, has proposed a bill that would allow budget committees to withhold up to 5% of an agency's funds if there are at least three repeated findings on the regular audit reports done every three years by the Office of Legislative Audits.
