August 23, 1946: Md Hereford Association Tours State

Democratic Advocate, August 23, 1946.

MD. HEREFORD ASSOC. TOURS STATE - Visits Farms of Arthur B. Shipley, Near Sykesville –

The Maryland Hereford Association made an extensive tour of the state to visit pure bred Hereford cattle farms August 9th. A two-day affair, the tour gave cattle breeders an opportunity of visiting farms on the Eastern and Western shores of the state.

After visiting the Eastern shore, they returned to Annapolis where they spent the night. On Sat. they proceeded to the Richard C. Riggs Foxhall Farm at Catonsville.

On Saturday afternoon the caravan consisting of 27 cars and a bus arrived at 2 o'clock at the Highland View farms owned by Arthur B. Shipley.

There were a number of Western as well as Eastern states represented in the group. Mr. Richard C. Riggs, chairman of the committee, introduced Mr. Shipley who took them for a straw ride to view the fine purebred herd and pastures. Mr. Shipley has over 100 pure-breds on his farms.

Eagle Archive: School experience has changed in Carroll, but it still adds up for students

In August, 1971, much of the community was curious as to whether or not the "Carroll County Vocational Technical Center" would open its doors on Sept. 7 to launch its first year of operation.

Today, the school on Washington Road, next to Westminster High School, is known as the Carroll County Career and Technology Center.

The job training and college preparatory classes at the Career and Technology Center vary from business and retail to computer and construction, from engineering and manufacturing to health and transportation.

According to an Aug. 16, 1971, article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate newspaper, "Frank Mather, administrator of the center, said that all of the school's facilities except for the horticulture area, conference rooms and some lavatories and some equipment will be ready for use on opening day….. http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0819-20120818,0,5980768.story

Eagle Archive: If the past is a guide, political conventions are sure to be entertaining

By Kevin Dayhoff, August 11, 2012 http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0812-20120808,0,1262168.story

As the Olympics draw to a close and the end of the summer looms on the horizon, you can be sure that the upcoming Republican and Democrat national conventions will provide end-of-summer entertainment.

For those setting their DVRs: The Republican National Convention is in Tampa on Aug. 27-30 and the upcoming Democrat National Convention will take place in Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 3-6.

Today's presidential nomination process is very different from the early days of the Republic, when the two major parties — the Federalists and the Democrat-Republicans (the forerunner of the today's Democrat Party) — determined their respective presidential nominees by a caucus made-up of members of Congress or state legislatures. This process prevailed through 1828.

The first national political convention of what we now know as the two major political parties was held by the Democrat Party just down the road in Baltimore, May 21 and 23, 1832… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0812-20120808,0,1262168.story

Eagle Archive: In 1923, sheriff busted the Hampstead fireman's carnival for gambling

On Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1923, the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company carnival was accused of running a gambling operation and was shut down by Carroll County Sheriff William Phillips.

Phillips appeared on the carnival grounds with Carroll County State's Attorney Theodore F. Brown, and arrested the person in charge of the carnival's amusements, Thomas Zepp, and hauled him off to jail.

Pandemonium broke loose in Hampstead as a result. This was especially true because of the significance the Hampstead fireman's carnival has played in the history of the town…

165 Million Americans Are Dependents of the State: Is Tyranny Next?

By Bill Wilson

Bill Wilson is the President of Americans for Limited Government.

Is America descending into a dependency state, where the majority uses its voting power to demand government services from taxpayers?

New research from Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee Jeff Sessions (R-AL) reveals that this reality may already be here, with more than 107 million Americans on some form of means-tested government welfare.

Add to that 46 million seniors collecting Medicare (subtracting out about 10 million on Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid, and other senior-eligible programs already included in Sessions' means-tested chart) and 22 million government employees at the federal, state, and local level — and suddenly, over 165 million people, a clear majority of the 308 million Americans counted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, are at least partially dependents of the state.

Since President Obama took office in 2009, eligibility for Medicaid, food stamps, the earned income tax credit, the making work pay tax credit, and unemployment benefits has increased by roughly 10 million. To add insult to injury, Obama then unilaterally dismantled the work requirements that were the heart of the 1990's welfare reform via an arbitrary executive order.

But it's even worse than that. In fact, most voting-age Americans do not pay income taxes — approximately 50.6 percent.

That includes 53.91 million Americans who pay nothing in income taxes, and another 64.7 million who get refunds in excess of what was owed. That's 118.61 million out of 234.6 million Americans 18 years and older, based on data compiled by the Joint Committee on Taxation and the U.S. Census Bureau.

1994 Westminster Nurseries recipes and home hints Calendar

For over 25-years I made a living farming nursery stock, trees, ornamental plants, and perennials. One of my key and critical suppliers was Westminster Nurseries.

I grew-up almost next to the Westminster Nurseries production fields and green houses and spent many an entire day roaming Westminster Nurseries’ fields.

And actually, that is how I learned the Latin names of most plants. The plants in the fields were always identified by its Latin name and as a child I never really thought much of it. I just figured that was the plant’s name… It was not until later in high school, when I took Latin classes, that I learned more about the Rules of Linnaeus and taxonomy…

I always liked the Westminster Nurseries’ calendar; not only because I liked the pictures, but I also liked the recipes and home hints…

Dishonorable Disclosures - You Tube: Intelligence and Spec Ops forces are furious at how Obama has exploited their service for political advantage

You Tube: Intelligence and Spec Ops forces are furious at how Obama has exploited their service for political advantage

About Dishonorable Disclosure

Published on Aug 15, 2012 by
Intelligence and Special Operations forces are furious and frustrated at how President Obama and those in positions of authority have exploited their service for political advantage. Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk.

The unwarranted and dangerous public disclosure of Special Forces Operations is so serious -- that for the first time ever -- former operators have agreed to risk their reputations and go 'on the record' in a special documentary titled "Dishonorable Disclosures." Its goal is to educate America about serious breaches of security and prevent them from ever happening again.

Use of military ranks, titles & photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement of the Dept of the Army or the Department of Defense. All individuals are no longer in active service with any federal agency or military service.

2005 Maryland Elected Officials Guide booklet from Constellation Energy

For many years, these booklets, produced and published by Baltimore Gas and Electric and later, Constellation Energy, with a picture and brief contact information for Maryland’s elected officials were a necessity for any political reporter. For that matter, they were a necessity for anyone with any business with the state of Maryland, especially the Maryland General Assembly.

I must have boxes of them in my basement office.

Alas, it was decided in the The Dayhoff Paper Reduction Act of June 20, 2012, Fighting the “Stuff Monster” http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5178, that I am no longer keep all those boxes of old papers from 35 years of working in government and writing.

Now, some of the very old elected official guides will probably be saved. Most of them will be pdf’d and recycled.

Meanwhile, please enjoy this glimpse at who was on first and what was on second, in Maryland, in 2005.

The older guides will be pdf’d and posted, as I come across them in their respective boxes…

Onward through the fog.
