The reason for the season of fall's colorful tree display [Eagle Archive]

The reason for the season of fall's colorful tree display [Eagle Archive]

On a drive through the Carroll County countryside the other day, WTTR was playing “The Mamas and the Papas” 1966 hit song “All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray” on the truck radio; but outside along the road, Mother Nature did not get the memo and was still dabbling with yellows, oranges and brilliant reds in the trees.

This year, the autumnal equinox, the first day of fall, began on September 22, at 4:44 p.m. That’s when the sun is aligned with the equator making days and nights equal in length.

The arrival of fall is a storied event in American history, folklore and tradition; however, one of the more interesting musings comes from Tom Robbins, the author of “Still Life with Woodpecker.”

Robbins wrote, “It was autumn, the springtime of death…”
Okay, well anyway; as old man winter approaches, there is arguably no prettier season in Carroll County than the vibrant tree leaves of fall. This is when, for a short period of time, trees are allowed to act-out and show some additional passion with a dazzling wardrobe of color.

A point not lost on Susan Williamson, the visual arts coordinator at the Carroll County Arts Council.

Some Carroll Countians Ready to Break Ties with the Free State - Government - Westminster, MD Patch:

A Carroll County man is leading the charge to form a new state comprised of five Maryland counties.

By Lauren Loricchio, Capital News Service

Maryland’s five western counties have had enough.

Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties are ready to sever ties with the Free State and start their own, according to Scott Strzelczyk, a 49-year-old information technology consultant and self-proclaimed leader of the Western Maryland Initiative.

“I think our differences are irreconcilable and ultimately we want an amicable divorce,” said Strzelczyk.  Strzelczyk, a resident of the rural town of New Windsor in Carroll County, said three things prompted him to create the group: gerrymandering of Western Maryland’s congressional district, tax increases and recent legislation limiting firearm sales in the state.

The Facebook page Strzelczyk launched to garner support for the cause, titled ‘Western Maryland: A New State Initiative,’ currently has more than 6,000 ‘likes’.  “We don’t need Annapolis telling us how to live our lives and telling us what’s right for us and what isn’t right for us,” Strzelczyk said.

Similar secessionist movements, led by citizens fed up with their state government, have sprung up throughout the country in states like Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New York and New Hampshire.

A group of conservatives in rural Northern California want to create the 51st state which they’ve named ‘Jefferson’. The organization’s website promotes smaller government and lower taxes.

"Internet access can be expensive, especially in developing countries. Google is backing a new project that aims to change that.

The search giant said Monday it has helped found the Alliance for Affordable Internet, or A4AI, a global coalition backed by Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee that hopes to dramatically cut the cost of Internet access.

Households in developing countries pay roughly a third of their monthly income for a fixed Internet connection, according to figures from the International Telecommunication Union.

“The reason for the Alliance is simple—the majority of the world’s people are still not online, usually because they can’t afford to be,” Berners-Lee said in a statement.

A4AI has a specific goal: to make broadband service cost less than 5 percent of average monthly income."

It would not be odd to see a farmer, a cow, a horse, a deer, corn stalks or a bird in Carroll County — just maybe not all in a corn field at one time.

A depiction of all these figures, meant to symbolize the many creatures that consume corn, can be found in a corn field near the Carroll County Agriculture Center and Shipley Arena in Westminster. The center used the help of GPS technology to mow the figures, which encompass roughly three miles, into the field as the route for their fourth annual corn maze.

“It’s gone well,” said agriculture center board member Caroline Babylon, of the corn maze over the years. “It’s a major fundraiser for us.”"

The tall fields of corn that cover much of Carroll’s countryside begin to vanish one at a time. By the time the first snow falls most of the fields have been cut and processed into grain or silage."

Google is building Chrome OS straight into Windows 8 | The Verge

Google is building Chrome OS straight into Windows 8 | The Verge:

By Tom Warren on October 5, 2013  http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/5/4806562/google-building-chrome-os-into-windows-8#!

"Google unveiled its Chrome Apps initiative recently to launch apps that exist outside of the browser and extend its reach into more of a platform, but it looks like the company has a whole lot more planned. Over the past few weeks, Google has been updating its developer version of the Chrome browser to run what's essentially Chrome OS within Windows 8's "Metro" mode.

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/5/4806562/google-building-chrome-os-into-windows-8#!

Chrome traditionally runs on the desktop in Windows 8, but you can set it to launch within the Windows 8 Start Screen into a special "Metro-style" mode. The new updates are very different from the existing stable channel version of Chrome in Windows 8 that simply presents a fullscreen browser. In the latest dev channel release the UI and functionality is identical to Chrome OS. There's a shelf with Chrome, Gmail, Google, Docs, and YouTube icons that can be arranged at the bottom, left, or right of the screen. Like Chrome OS, you can create multiple browser windows and arrange them using a snap to the left or right of the display or fullscreen modes. An app launcher is also available in the lower left-hand corner."

Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, Who Ousted U.S. From Vietnam, Is Dead

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/05/world/asia/gen-vo-nguyen-giap-dies.html?emc=edit_na_20131004&_r=0

Vo Nguyen Giap, the relentless and charismatic North Vietnamese general whose battlefield victory at Dien Bien Phu drove France out of Vietnam and whose tenacious resistance to the United States in a long and costly war there eventually sapped America’s political will to fight, died on Friday in Hanoi. He was believed to be 102.

The death was reported by several Vietnamese news organizations, including the respected Tuoi Tre Online, which said he died in an army hospital.

General Giap was among the last survivors of a generation of Communist revolutionaries who in the postwar decades freed Vietnam of colonial rule and fought a superpower to a stalemate. In his later years, he was a living reminder of a war that was mostly old history to the Vietnamese, many of whom were born after it had ended.

    ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
    December 19, 2005

For many years, civic and human services leaders in Carroll County shared a common vision of an umbrella organization that would facilitate philanthropic activities within our community. In mid-1993, a steering committee, which included James Wise, Arthur Valenzano, Calvin Seitz, Peggie Roland, Donald Hull, George Giese, William Gering, and Audrey Cimino, began the process of making the Community Foundation of Carroll County a reality.

Beginning with a gift of sixty thousand dollars from the Estate of Rosa B. Null, a Hampstead, Maryland resident, the Community Foundation has grown to 3.4 million dollars in endowments, operations funds, scholarships and funds managed for other community organizations. As your Community Foundation, we receive funds from individuals, businesses, and other community organizations whose purpose is to enhance and support the quality of life in this community. We are a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All contributions are tax deductible to the maximum amount allowable for gifts to a public charity. This allows many individuals, through gifts and bequests, to establish permanent endowment funds within the confines of one large foundation or to develop new funding ideas for the benefit of Carroll County.

Currently, there are more than six hundred Community Foundations across America. What they all share is a common mission - to help maximize the current and long-term impact of charitable activities within their communities, while providing donors with significant financial advantages, tax savings and recognition. It is no news to anyone that there are an overwhelming number of organizations and programs now desperately searching for funds. For people with a strong sense of community and personal commitment to make significant contributions to the community in which they live, the choices can be especially demanding. The Community Foundation of Carroll County can be the conduit for tax-advantaged charitable gifts from individuals and corporations in our community.

Audrey S. Cimino is the Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Carroll County, Inc. Prior to assuming this position, she was a Vice President and Trust Business Development Officer for Carroll County Bank and Trust Company, now BBandT.

Audrey is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association; her undergraduate and Law Degrees are from Essex Community College and The University of Baltimore.

Audrey has served on the Board of Directors of a number of professional and local charitable organizations including University of Baltimore Board of Governors, Baltimore Estate Planning Council, Carroll County General Hospital, The Shepherd’s Staff, Voices for Children, The Literacy Council, The Vagabond Players, and Association of Development Officers of Carroll County.

A revolutionary idea in coffee at the Furnace Hills Coffee Co. [Eagle Archives] By Kevin Dayhoff 9:02 a.m. EDT, October 2, 2013

    […]

A number of popular coffee shops have started in Carroll County in recent years. A recent trip to the Furnace Hills Coffee Co. at 71 West Main St., in Westminster reveals an egalitarian use for coffee that is revolutionary.

At Furnace Hills, the aroma of coffee wafted into the street Saturday afternoon, the day before the national coffee holiday. There, Regina Harshman was juggling business phone calls, roasting coffee beans, and doing various housekeeping chores among huge sacks of coffee beans at the one room coffee shop next to Harry’s Main Street Grille.

    […]

One frequent customer, Abby Gruber, the Westminster Director of Recreation and Parks, says she loves Furnace Hills coffee. “The shop is right there near the city offices. The smell just calls you. I always enjoy the company and the coffee there.”

    1. Woman on 'Today' Plaza: GOP to Blame for Shutdown, Obama 'Best President We Have Had In a Very Long Time'
On Tuesday's NBC Today, co-host Carson Daly turned to a woman on theToday show plaza for her reaction to the government shutdown. "Judy from Chicago" proceeded to bash Republicans and praise President Obama: "I think all of this amounts to is the Republicans are against President Obama. They don't want the President to be successful. I think he is the best President we have had in a very long time."  She continued: "I think they need to work together. They knew for a long time this was coming to this. How about they don't receive any paychecks, just like everyone else?" Daly agreed: "Right. That's good thoughts. Thank you, Judy."

    2. Politico's Roger Simon: 'Extreme Right-Wing' Is Taking the GOP 'Hostage'
On CNN Tuesday, Politico's Roger Simon slammed the "extreme right-wing" for using "food as a political weapon," for taking the GOP "hostage," and for denying "health care to 11 million people" in favor of a shutdown. "The extreme right-wing of the Republican Party has taken that party hostage, at least in the House of Representatives," Simon ranted. He summarized their current position on the shutdown: "[W]e would rather shut down the government than extend health care to eleven million people."

    3. CNN Shutdown Bias: Republican 'Suicide Caucus' Is 'Hurting Families'
Before and during Tuesday's government shutdown, CNN hosts, reporters, and anchors blasted Republicans and blamed them for the shutdown. New Day co-host Chris Cuomo told Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) "You did shut down the government," and asked him if he would admit he was wrong for "hurting families." On Tuesday's Tom Joyner Morning Show, CNN anchor Don Lemon spat on the "false narrative" that both parties were to blame and pointed his finger squarely at Republicans. During Tuesday's The Situation Room, correspondent Brian Todd refered to the group of 80 "hard-line Republicans" standing against ObamaCare funding as the "suicide caucus." All three networks on Tuesday morning hyped the partial government shutdown with reports from closed museums in Washington D.C. and live shots of the Statue of Liberty. The journalists of ABC's Good Morning America informed Americans that Republicans would probably "blink first" in the stand-off with the White House and congressional Democrats. NBC's Peter Alexander checked in live from Washington, touting the "4200 workers at the Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo." He narrated, "We're now here in front of the National Air and Space Museum. They tell me last week they had 88,000 visitors come here. Today it'll be zero, the door's are locked." Alexander added, "And there's a very simple message posted to that front door, it reads, 'We apologize for the inconvenience.'"

ABC reporter Jeff Zeleny on Tuesday afternoon excitedly told viewers that "cracks" are "emerging" in the Republican opposition to the government shutdown. His example of this? A GOP congressman already on record opposing a shutdown. Following live coverage of Barack Obama's speech, the journalist related, "But a couple cracks emerging, including a congressman from Virginia, a military district, Scott Rigell. He says, 'enough is enough. It's time to move on with this.'" However, on the September 20 World News, Zeleny reported, "We caught up with Congressman Scott Rigell of Virginia, the only Republican to go against his party." On that day, the reporter featured a clip of Rigell exclaiming, "And I've not heard from any members who thinks that shutting this government down is a good idea."

On the Monday, September 30, The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, substitute host Alex Wagner read a tweet written by guest Bruce Bartlett in which the former George H.W. Bush administration official expressed hope that the Tea Party would soon "die a well-deserved death." After Bartlett referred to "Tea Party clowns" as he hoped that Republican leaders would manage to "put them down or limit their influence," Wagner expresed her approval of her guest calling Tea Party Republicans "clowns" as she began her response: "Bruce refers to the 'Tea Party clowns,' and I think a lot of people would agree with that designation..."
