I believe in Santa Claus by Kevin Earl Dayhoff

December 9, 2016

Throughout history, Westminster and Carroll County have been filled with the spirit of the season for the Christmas holidays. No Grinches here.

I hope that by now you are putting the final touches on your Christmas decorations and wrapping presents with some soothing heavy metal Christmas music on in the background.

Actually, some of my all-time Christmas favorites include "The Chipmunk Song" sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958 and "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" written by John Rox and performed by Gayla Peevey, 10 years old at the time, in 1953.

Another classic that comes to mind is a little more offbeat, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Tommie Connor. He was only 13 years old when it was recorded in 1952. The song was actually banned by the Catholic Church in several cities.

Yes, of course, I believe in Santa Claus.

I believe because Dolly Pardon and local community leader Mary Bostwick Shellman have told me that Santa exists...

‘Kenny & Dolly: A Christmas to Remember’, Published November 15, 1984 / Last Updated August 23, 2015: ‘Kenny & Dolly – Christmas To Remember’ is a network television Christmas special inspired by their popular album, ‘Once Upon a Christmas’

In 1984, Dolly Parton starred alongside of Kenny Rogers in “Kenny & Dolly: A Christmas To Remember,” a network television special inspired by “Once Upon A Christmas,” a popular Christmas album recorded by Dolly and Kenny Rogers.

Parton told the world that she believes in Santa Claus on December 2, 1984 when she sang “I Believe in Santa Claus” with Kenny Rogers in a Christmas special on CBS, “Kenny & Dolly – Christmas To Remember.” According to her website, dollyparton.com, the Christmas special show was “inspired by their popular album, ‘Once Upon a Christmas.’” http://dollyparton.com/life-and-career/movies-television/christmas-to-remember/463

‘Kenny & Dolly’ sang, “… I believe in Santa Claus I'll tell you why I do… I believe that dreams and plans and wishes can come true. I believe in miracles I believe in magic too. I believe in Santa Claus and I believe in you. I believe in family in country and in smiles. I believe in turning negatives to positives in life…”

In Carroll County, we are dealing with the consequences of years of paying high Maryland state taxes and contributing to the Maryland transportation fund and getting nothing in return.

We are long overdue to have the state address many of the neglected but much needed road and intersection upgrades.

Not only are the roads not designed in Carroll County to handle the current traffic loads but also it seems many folks could stand to be more patient and polite. Just saying

WESTMINSTER POLICE HOST 13TH ANNUAL “SHOP WITH A COP” EVENT

WESTMINSTER POLICE HOST 13TH ANNUAL “SHOP WITH A COP” EVENT TO BENEFIT LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED

On December 10, 2016 at 8:00 a.m., the Westminster Police Department, in partnership with the Westminster Walmart, will be hosting their 13th Annual “Shop With A Cop” Program.

The “Shop With A Cop” program originated in 1978 as a way to give deserving children an opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts for their family members.

The program also gives children the opportunity to meet and spend time with police officers in a positive and non-confrontational environment.

This year twenty children from seven local families have been selected to participate. In the previous twelve years of the program, the Westminster PD “Shop With A Cop” program has benefited 268 kids from 119 local families in need.

The 2016 “Shop With A Cop” celebration will take place at the Westminster Walmart located at 280 Woodward Road (Westminster) on December 10th.

The children selected will be teamed with Police Department officers and employees to pick out gifts for the holiday season. Walmart will be providing gift cards to allow the children to purchase holiday gifts for their family members. After the shopping is completed, everyone will return to the Westminster Senior Center where they will wrap the gifts that were purchased. Following the gift-wrapping, the Police Department will host a holiday party from approx. 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for all participating families. Additionally, Santa will make a surprise visit.

More than 20 local businesses will be making donations in support of this years “Shop With A Cop” effort. Approximately 250 gifts have been donated by the generous citizens of Carroll County from gift ideas posted on the “Angel Tree” at Walmart. These gifts will be distributed to the children and their families.

Baltimore Sun: Gov. Larry Hogan, Annapolis leaders praise new Baltimore mayor

Baltimore Sun: Gov. Larry Hogan, Annapolis leaders praise new Baltimore mayor http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-hogan-pugh-inauguration-20161206-story.html Article by Erin Cox Wednesday, December 7, 2016

This is a great turn of events. We all benefit and move the ball forward when we set aside partisan politics and work together. Mayor Pugh is where she is today because she works hard, does her homework, is nice to people and does not play partisan politics. She has depth and integrity, knows the issues, and how to put folks together to solve problems.

I actually had expected great things from Mayor Catherine Pugh’s predecessor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. I had worked with her dad, "Pete" Rawlings, in Annapolis on a number of municipal issues and I really enjoyed working with him. Sadly, I was disappointed with SRB’s tenure in office. I sincerely hope she takes advantage of her time in the desert to reflect upon how she may come back, and serve again by building upon her strengths and addressing the lessons learn. Only time will tell.

For a great article on Mayor Rawlings-Blake, read Barry Rascovar’s story, “The Disappointing Mayoralty of Stephanie Rawlings-Blake: http://politicalmaryland.com/2016/12/05/the-disappointing-mayoralty-of-stephanie-rawlings-blake/ - KED

****************************

Meanwhile, according to Erin Cox:

"Republican Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday delivered an emphatic endorsement of Baltimore's new Democratic Mayor Catherine Pugh, praising her relentless energy and saying the pair 'have a shared purpose and share a commitment' to improve the city.

'This morning, I am incredibly hopeful about the future,' Hogan said during brief remarks at her inauguration ceremony. 'Mayor Pugh and I have a shared vision for Baltimore.' [...]

Hogan called Pugh's inauguration a 'very important day for Baltimore' and suggested her administration would better weather problems that beleaguer the city. He said they both want to eliminate disparities, raze dilapidated houses and invigorate the city's economy.

'Baltimore has endured through some difficult times,' he said. 'But it is when the challenges are greatest that effective leadership is needed the most.'

From the stage, Pugh reciprocated Hogan's promise to work together, turning from the crowd to directly address just him minutes after taking the oath of office...

The exchange, plus the bi-partisan spread of elected officials sharing a stage at the War Memorial ceremony, highlighted the incoming mayor's pragmatism and relationships cemented over two decades in public office."

2nd Sunday of Advent services at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster www.gracelc.org

2nd Sunday of Advent services at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster www.gracelc.org Dec. 4, 2016

John the Baptist's job was to prepare the way for Jesus. The gospel lesson for this Sunday comes from Matthew 3:1-12.

Christmas is about Jesus. Remember this should you get lost in the hecticness of the season and lose sight of this. Jesus is the reason for the season.

We are mindful of the raging fires in Tennessee. The devastation of the fires calls to our attention what is really important to us. If we had to flee the fire, what would we really want to take with us?

Remember Romans 15:13 "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope."
