Friday, Jan. 6th, 2017

On Saturday, January14, 2017, 9:00 a.m., at Martin’s Caterers, in Westminster, Baltimore Sun sports writer Mike Preston will be the guest speaker at the 14th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast, sponsored by the Carroll County NAACP Branch 7014.

I will have the privilege and honor of introducing my Baltimore Sun – Sun Media Group colleague, Mr. Preston that morning.

Tickets are still available. For tickets: Contact Charlotte Brown (410) 861-7890, Jean Lewis (410) 861-6872, or purchase online at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-carroll-county-naacp-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-breakfast-tickets-30496299252

Or, you can email me at kevindayhoff@gmail.com. Make sure the words Preston NAACP breakfast are in the subject line. On the other hand, if you know my phone number, just give me a call.

Over the years, the annual MLK breakfast has turned into a popular and well-attended event and a great break from the gray and cold of Maryland’s winters.

Many are excited to come hear veteran journalist Mike Preston speak. Mr. Preston, a 1977 graduate of Kenwood High, and a 1981 Towson University graduate has had a distinguished writing career that spans over 38 years since he first began writing at the News American as an intern in 1979. He first joined the Baltimore Sun in 1983, after several years at The Essex Times.

We need to turn in the final count to the caterer soon, so if you want tickets, be in touch soon. Thanks.

D.C.’s ‘beyond broken’ criminal-justice system is an outrage

The Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency on Indiana Avenue in the District. (J. Lawler Duggan/For The Washington Post)

By Editorial Board December 30, 2016

“BEYOND BROKEN.” That characterization by then-D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier of the District’s criminal-justice system was dismissed by some as hyperbole. But the truth of her words has been borne out in excruciating detail over the past year by Post reporters who have chronicled how repeat violent offenders are released back into the community, only to commit new crimes. “Where the hell is the outrage?” asked the departing chief — a question that, more than ever in light of The Post’s revelations, demands to be addressed by the city and federal officials responsible for the system.

The failings of the mix of local and federal agencies that comprise the criminal-justice system in the District have been the subject of examination in The Post’s ongoing “Second-Chance City” series. Lax enforcement by key federal agencies and questionable judgments from the D.C. Superior Court were spotlighted in a case in which the release of an offender resulted in a woman being raped.
