We ate at The Dough Rollers at 41st Street and the Coastal Highway #MSFA2017

We ate at The Dough Rollers at 41st Street and the Coastal Highway - right next to the OC Convention Center,  after the memorial service. It was nice to sit down for a dinner and the place was very pleasant - almost like a country restaurant. Our servers were really nice, the food was not over-priced, and we both enjoyed our dinner. www.DoughRollerRestaurants.com Sunday, June 18, 2017. #MSFA2017

This scale does not measure character, beauty, or talent.

“This scale can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That’s it. It cannot measure character, beauty, talent, purpose, possibility, strength, or love.”

Smile, this sign is attached to the wall in my sister’s doctor’s office above the scales – where you weigh-in. Too fun. So true. June 16, 2017

And yes, my sister is awesome. And yes, she is a brainiac. Just saying.

We are excited to bring this packet of information to you about the upcoming 125th Annual Convention and Conference of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) and the Ladies Auxiliary. The 125th Celebration has been taking place all year long throughout the Great State of Maryland and will climax with the Convention in Ocean City, Maryland, on Saturday, June 17, 2017 and continue through Friday, June 23, 2017. This year the Convention Committee has been working extremely hard to create more family participation activities as a part of the week-long schedule of events. We encourage you to bring the family to the beach and experience a unique Ocean City Family Memory.

We hope that you take advantage of the many opportunities for informative presentations, networking with your peers from around the state, getting additional training and education by attending one of the many conference seminars offered, and getting hands-on-opportunities to view new product/technology at our two exhibit halls. In addition, take some time to attend our Sunday Joint Memorial Service and our Awards Presentation on Tuesday morning as we recognize the achievement, accomplishments, and dedication of many departments and individuals within the MSFA and the Ladies Auxiliary. Look for events marked “NEW” to see what has been added or changed.

It is important that you take some time to look over the entire convention and conference schedule to make sure you do not miss anything. The convention committee is committed in bringing you the best annual gathering possible. For lunch Sat, June 10, 2017, Grammy, Caroline and I ate at local Korean Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

For lunch Sat, June 10, 2017, Grammy, Caroline and I ate at local Korean Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich in Newport News, Virginia.

We got off 64 at Rte 17 north, exit 259a. At the intersection of Rte 17 and Old Oyster Point Road, we found "Straight Outta Philly," at 12:15. Lunch took an hour. We left at 1:15 and resumed driving up Rte 17.

I got a Philly Cheese Steak Pizza. I am not kidding. Grammy actually got a Philly Cheese Steak. Caroline got the Korean Beef Bolgogi, with three Mondoos and no Kimchi. All of our food was quite good.

The restaurant was clean, well-lit and nicely decorated in a vinyl record musical theme. I especially appreciated several home-made signs that the server explained, were made by a local regular customer.

One sign explained that 'Tipping' was not a faraway Chinese city… We sat under a very large neon sign with the restaurant's name.

We always take a great deal of pride in finding locally-owned restaurants for eating when we are on the road. We like supporting local small businesses. More often than not, they have a story to tell, the food is great and the restaurant employees and servers are fun.

Straight Outta Philly was great. Our server was a local girl, who wants to go to school to be an ultrasound technician. While we were there a number of local folks came to eat, including two post office employees.

Today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII

Today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

My morning conversation with Mrs. Sun. Mrs. Sun struggled to awaken this morning. But a fresh cup of coffee finally did the trick. #OBX June 6, 2017. I got up early at 5:45 - 6 a.m.
Today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII.

Yes - as I listen to the waves, I remember that today is the anniversary of D-Day in France during WWII.

And I listen in silence so that I may hear the waves clearly speak for all the silent voices of the past.

I say a morning prayer for the folks many decades ago, who made it possible that I can sit by a tranquil seashore all these years later. I do not take it for granted and I will never forget. I pay homage to those who made it possible. Many of them left a simple young life, full of the future and a life of possibilities ahead of them, from my hometown - and they never came home.

I say a prayer for my Dad who served in the Pacific. I say a prayer for my friends who served in Vietnam while I was stationed stateside. All I could was worry - and pray. I say a prayer for my friends who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I say a prayer for the continued loss of life in London to the forces of sheer madness.

God bless those brave souls who served at D-Day, for their sense of duty and for their sacrifice so many decades ago. I am simply at a loss to imagine the terror, sense of duty, fate and destiny, and the fear.

All we can do now is pray and live a full life - to do honor for their sacrifice. And never-ever forget...

The Rte 17 bridge spans the York River at Yorktown

The Rte 17 bridge spans the York River at Yorktown

Photos by Kevin Dayhoff May 31, 2017

The Rte 17 bridge, which spans the York River at Yorktown and Gloucester Point is known as the “The George P. Coleman Bridge,” according to an article in “Roads to the Future.” The article explains that the bridge “is a 3,750-foot-long double-swing-span bridge located in Yorktown, Virginia, and the bridge crosses the York River. http://www.roadstothefuture.com/Coleman_Bridge.html

The article further explains, “The Coleman Bridge was built as a 2-lane facility in 1952, and it connects the counties of York and Gloucester. The bridge carries Route US-17, a 4-lane arterial highway through eastern Virginia. George P. Coleman, the bridge's namesake, was the Commissioner (agency head) of the Virginia Department of Highways, from 1913 to 1922.

“Due to increasing traffic that had caused the 2-lane bridge to be congested during peak hours, the bridge was widened and reconstructed to 4 lanes, with construction spanning from August 1994 to August 1996. The prime design consultant for the project was Parsons Brinckerhoff, and the prime construction contractor for the project was Tidewater Construction Corporation, of Norfolk, Virginia (now Tidewater Skanska, Inc.).

“The Coleman Bridge main span has 450 feet of horizontal navigational clearance, and 60 feet of vertical navigational clearance when the movable spans are closed. When the movable spans are opened, there is unlimited vertical navigational clearance. The York River has a natural depth of over 60 feet where the bridge's movable spans are. The movable span is needed to allow ship access to several military installations that are upstream of the bridge. The roadways are almost 90 feet above the river at the highest point of the bridge.” Read the rest of the article here: http://www.roadstothefuture.com/Coleman_Bridge.html
