The event is sponsored by MarketWorks and Dr. Faye Pappalardo, with additional sponsorships available. For more information, contact Frank Baylor at baylorcad@comcast.net or 443.340.2061.

Proceeds from the Farm to Table Brunch will help support Carroll County Food Sundays nutrition efforts including the Veggie Voucher Program.

Thanks and come hungry and bring your friends!

BTW, Carroll County Food Sunday I will be at the Downtown Westminster Farmers Market 8:30 to noon on Saturday 7-7-18 and can register you there.

According to its website, Carroll County Food Sunday “distributes a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package that is predicated on household size and is meant to last 3-4 days. It includes meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, breads, and milk. Over 400 families a week are served at our Westminster, Eldersburg, and Taneytown locations.

In an email interview, Frank Baylor, a past president of Food Sunday said that Food Sunday “started around 1982 from the trunk of Mr. Jollie's car and has grown to the point where 8,000 lbs. of food are distributed each week. 250 to 400 families are aided each week…”

“For the sake of human decency, feeding the poor and the hungry people of Carroll County must be a concern for all of us who are not hungry,” wrote Jollie, according to the Food Sunday website. “To know hunger exists and to do nothing is the shame and bane of human life.” Jollie encouraged the religious community to collect food at their Sunday services for distribution through a county wide food bank network that was appropriately incorporated as “Food Sunday.”

The operating budget for CCFS is “supported by community fund-raisers and direct mail solicitation of county residents. We are grateful for the churches, individuals, school groups, and service organizations that raise donations independently on our behalf, and for the local grocers that donate baked goods. Carroll County Government provides donated warehouse space in Westminster and utilities….

“Food drives and food donations are also very important in helping us maintain a reliable inventory of nutritional items year round. We are constantly purchasing food from a variety of sources based on price and availability. Our Food Bank Coordinator compares bulk prices at local merchants with those available from Maryland Food Bank, a large wholesaler in the Maryland Region. When possible, we take advantage of special deals to stock up on essential food supplies that can be held in reserve until needed.

Carroll County Food Sunday is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of representatives of all sectors of the community. Its daily operations are managed by two part-time employees – Dennis Fahey, Food Bank Administrator and Ed Leister, Executive Director.

This just in from the latest edition of the SPJ newsletter

This just in from the latest edition of the SPJ newsletter

July 4, 2018

“And, in light of the tragedy at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, let us not forget that the willingness to sign your name to an article, a column, a masthead continues to require an uncommon bravery we often take for granted.” -- Christopher Carosa, president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, for USA Today.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

People are still talking about Annapolis after a man armed with a shotgun and smoke grenades stormed into the newsroom of a community newspaper chain in Maryland’s capital on Thursday afternoon, killing five staff members, injuring two others. It prompted law enforcement agencies across the country to provide protection at the headquarters of media organizations.

You can help honor the memories of the Capital Gazette journalists by acknowledging a moment of silence. At 2:33 p.m. EDT Thursday, SPJ will join journalism groups and newsrooms around the globe in a moment of silence to honor the five employees who were killed.

To help newsrooms protect their journalists, ASNE and APME have created a tip sheet explaining how to react if an aggressor enters the building.

In another act of violence against a journalist, Crime Reporter José Guadalupe Chan Dzib, who was murdered Friday night in Quintana Roo, had been threatened but was not provided with official protection, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico (OHCHR) revealed.

High school educators across the country have been clamping down on students who publish articles on protests, sexuality, and other hot-button issues. The killing of the opinion piece on the National School Walkout protest was the third instance of conflict between John Burdett, the principal of Prosper High School in Prosper, Texas, and the school’s news publication, Eagle Nation Online.

CafePress, an online retailer, was in hot water for selling T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required.” CafePress pulled the shirts soon after the outcry began, but then the question shifted to why it carried them in the first place. The message has been seen on t-shirts at Trump rallies for almost two years. But the fury over the message has increased since last week, when five journalists were killed in a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta has appeared in at least one advertisement for his brother’s Democratic congressional campaign, raising questions about his objectivity in reporting on the president’s health. At the very least, experts say, it creates the perception of bias. (And we all know what the SPJ Code of Ethics says about that.)

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

July 4th, 2018.

Just to shake things up a bit, Caroline, Grammy, and I had Popeyes carry-out for dinner on the 4th of July. The place was very busy. Staff was very nice. We enjoyed our dinner. We will go back. There are several things I want to try on the menu. Caroline and I enjoy southern cooking – especially Louisiana – Cajun cooking.

I cannot remember the last time I went to Popeyes. Years ago, when I was in office, then-Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker used to have our executive strategy sessions at Popeyes 3694 in Westminster at the intersection of Rte 140 and Rte 97 – 624 Baltimore Blvd. 410-857-7550.

Although Popeyes has occupied the building for a long time, many years ago, it was the location of a savings and loan called Vermont Federal. Before then it was a service and gas station. I do not recall the name of the gas station.

The other night, Caroline and I were visiting with  friends Charles L Dorm Jr and Emily Willis-Dorm and he was reminiscing that there was a fire there a number of years ago that has to be one of the coldest fires the Westminster Fire Company ever fought. Along with the fire at the Shipley House at the corner of Main and Center Street. Caroline’s Dad always told stories about the fire at Hahn’s Grocery Store at the corner of Bishop Street and East Main Street. Apparently that was a cold fire also. I also think that former Westminster Police Chief Dean Brewer also recalls the fire at the location of Vermont Federal.

Happy 4th

The Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times killed 21 people

The Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times killed 21 people

In its recent newsletter, the Society of Professional Journalists has taken the opportunity to remind us about the Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times building.

The 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times has been the subject of books and film. By CAROLINA A. MIRANDA SEP 22, 2017 http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/miranda/la-et-cam-esotouric-los-angeles-times-bombing-20170922-story.html

The weapon: 16 sticks of dynamite and a windup alarm clock.

The target: The old Los Angeles Times building, an 1886 brick-and-granite edifice known as "the fortress," on Broadway and First Street, across the street from where The Times is located today.

The bomber: J.B. McNamara, who was linked to an ironworkers union that ordered the attack — part of a radical bombing campaign to go after anti-union strongholds in the early days of the 20th century.

Twenty-one people died in the early hours of Oct. 1, 1910, when the explosive device ripped an entire wing off The Times building. A night editor and a telegraph operator were among the dead, and dozens of others were wounded and maimed. A report published in The Times two days after the incident described the scene as an "awful pit of death."

Heralded as the "crime of the century," the bombing has been the subject of books (such as "Deadly Times" by Lew Irwin) and it has figured in documentaries (Peter Jones' "Inventing L.A.: The Chandlers and Their Times").

A Massachusetts woman begs people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs

A Massachusetts woman begs people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs

KED - What the article does not mention is that in part, one of the drivers for the precipitous increase in the cost of a ride to the emergency room is “ambulance abuse.” Folks who call an ambulance for unnecessary reasons. These are the folks who have a headache, a running nose or stub their toe and they are calling an ambulance. At the station we call them the “frequent fliers.” More often than not – “frequent fliers” do not pay their ambulance bills – read: the station goes uncompensated for the call; and these folks call a lot. So, who pays for ambulance abuse – we do. All of us do.

Woman begging people not to call ambulance gains national attention
BY ARIS FOLLEY - 07/03/18 03:20 PM EDT

A Massachusetts woman is drawing attention for begging people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs after she was injured in a subway accident.

Video of the woman from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police (MBTA) Police Department went viral over the weekend. It shows her in apparent agony after her leg was caught in a gap between a train and the platform on Friday.

The 45-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, asked fellow passengers who came to her aid to not call the ambulance. “Do you know how much an ambulance costs?” the injured woman asked one passenger.
The story first picked up traction on Twitter when a Boston Globe reporter posted about the incident after witnessing the aftermath of the accident on Friday.
