Autumn Leaves - Eric Clapton ... The reason for the season of fall's colorful tree display

The reason for the season of fall's colorful tree display [Eagle Archive]

On a drive through the Carroll County countryside the other day, WTTR was playing “The Mamas and the Papas” 1966 hit song “All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray” on the truck radio; but outside along the road, Mother Nature did not get the memo and was still dabbling with yellows, oranges and brilliant reds in the trees.

This year, the autumnal equinox, the first day of fall, began on September 22, at 4:44 p.m. That’s when the sun is aligned with the equator making days and nights equal in length.

The arrival of fall is a storied event in American history, folklore and tradition; however, one of the more interesting musings comes from Tom Robbins, the author of “Still Life with Woodpecker.”

Robbins wrote, “It was autumn, the springtime of death…”

    By Kevin E. Dayhoff, kevindayhoff@gmail.com Sunday, October 20, 2013

Carroll County volunteer firefighters from throughout the county responded Sunday afternoon to a laundry room fire at “Vetville” in the 100 unit block of Wimert Avenue, near Sullivan Avenue and Route 140 in northwest Westminster.

The complex, known locally as “Vetville,” dates back to 1946, when the housing units were built “by the government for the GIs who are attending or will attend Western Maryland College under the GI Bill of Rights,” according to a newspaper account in the now-defunct Democratic Advocate.

“A one-story construction, set up on cement blocks, with a brick-like celetex finish, they will fill the hopes of many GIs who plan to finish their education with their families. The apartments are made up of living room, two bedrooms, two closets and a kitchen, to be fully equipped with sink, stove and refrigerator…”

It is believed that the last fire occurred in Vetville on November 2, 2003, when, “A two-alarm fire … destroyed a four-unit apartment building in Westminster, but its eight residents, including two children, escaped without injuries,” according to an article in the Baltimore Sun.

I wanted to let you know that earlier today I received my  "Obamacare enrollment packet” from the White House.

    It contained:
    · An aspirin and a band-aid.
    · An 'Obama Hope & Change' bumper sticker
    · A 'Bush's Fault' yard sign
    · A 'Blame Republicans first, then anybody and everybody'  poster
    · A 'Tax the Rich' banner
    · An application for unemployment and a free cellphone
    · An application for food stamps
    · A prayer rug
    · A letter assigning my debt to my grandchildren
    · And lastly, a coupon for a machine that blows smoke up my ass.

Everything was made in "China" and all directions were in Spanish.
Keep an eye out. Yours should be arriving soon.

Windows 8.1 launches, with some familiar touches

By Hayley Tsukayama, Thursday, October 17, 2013

Microsoft’s latest operating system update, Windows 8.1 is now available. The new update brings back at least one of the familiar touches that users missed after the company launched its major system overhaul, Windows 8, last year: the start button.

The button has become a sort of rallying point for Windows 8 critics who were not big fans of the decision to change the look of the operating system to a grid-like pattern meant to work on touchscreens in addition to a keyboard and mouse. Consequently, it was one of the main rollbacks of the Windows 8.1 update, along with the ability to boot the computer straight to the desktop rather than to the Microsoft 8 start screen.

The return of the start button, however, doesn’t mean the return of the start button menu — instead … Read more: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/windows-81-launches-with-some-familiar-touches/2013/10/17/5801ae38-373a-11e3-80c6-7e6dd8d22d8f_story.html?wpisrc=nl_tech

Carroll loses links to its past in Ruth Leppo and Elmer Lippy [Eagle Archives]

Carroll loses links to its past in Ruth Leppo and Elmer Lippy [Eagle Archives]

By Kevin Dayhoff, October 16, 2013

In the past week the Carroll County community has lost two storied and celebrated links to our past. Elmer C. Lippy, Jr., 93, of Manchester, died Oct. 13 at the Long View Nursing Home in Manchester. Ruth Ellen Leppo, 75, of Westminster, died Oct. 12 at the Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center.

Leppo was a substitute teacher for many years at Westminster and Elmer Wolfe Elementary Schools. Moreover she was well-known and beloved by much of the law enforcement community as the wife of the late, long-serving Westminster Police Chief, Sam Leppo, who died at the age of 53 in an off-duty automobile accident on Aug. 4, 1999.

Lippy’s long-standing tenure as an elected official was chronicled in a March 30, 1999 article in the Baltimore Sun: “Lippy has served split stints as mayor and one term as county commissioner since retiring in 1985 as a senior chemist with Lever Bros. in Baltimore. A Democrat, he served on the Town Council for two years before his election as mayor in 1987. He won his second four-year term in 1995, defeating his second cousin for the job. Lippy was a county commissioner from 1990 to 1994. He lost his bid for a second term in 1994 and ran unsuccessfully for Orphan's Court judge last fall….”

Stop and think of any great Carroll Countian that has gone on before us, and remember that history is often the sanitized and romanticized version of difficult events, in which ordinary folks stepped up to do extraordinary things.  Their accomplishments are the stuff of legend, but their day-to-day struggle to make a difference was the stuff of great sacrifice.

Carroll County has been fortunate to have many native sons and daughters who made a difference in our community. Ruth Leppo and Elmer Lippy are remembered fondly as great community leaders who forged links from the past and influenced our future. I had the distinct honor and privilege of having worked with both individuals.
