November 27, 2008: Penny Riordan Carroll Seniors and the Great Depression

November 27, 2008: Penny Riordan Carroll Seniors and the Great Depression

In November 2008, writer Penny Riordan gave us a first-hand account of Carroll Seniors and the Great Depression. November 27, 2008 KED

On November 27, 2008 I wrote:

Penny Riordan Carroll Seniors and the Great Depression

For those who have missed the reporting of Penny Riordan, the former education reporter for in the Carroll County Times, do not despair.

She is still with the paper; however she has become the editor of the newspaper’s “Carroll Seniors” publication.

The November 2008 edition of the paper has a great deal of excellent content on the Great Depression, which has certainly been in the forefront of the news these days as the nation continues to wrangle with economic turmoil.

Unfortunately, the content is not online.  So you will have to walk on your feet to a nearby hungry store and pick up a copy at a newsstand.  How quaint.

I recently grabbed a copy and revisited the joys of actually holding a newspaper in my hand as I poured over the excellent writing…  You should do likewise.  It is some great reading…

Kevin Dayhoff November 27, 2008

“Carroll Seniors”  “The Great Depression: those who lived the decade compare it to the current economic crisis”

“Banks shutting down.

Stock market troubles.

Unemployment.

In today’s economy, these phrases are used often. But they also conjure up memories of another economic crisis that has been brought up a lot more in recent months: the great depression.

But for those who lived through the great depression, things going on in the economy today just don’t quite compare.”

Carroll Seniors is a free publication distributed by the Carroll County Times.  It is produced by Penny Riordan, the former education reporter for the Times.

Tired of junk mail – check out the “Drowning in Junk Mail” website

Tired of junk mail – check out the “Drowning in Junk Mail” website: https://drowndinginmail.wordpress.com/

October 16, 2015

In all the years I have worked hard to stop receiving junk mail, I have never seen as informative a website as “Drowning in Junk Mail” - https://drowndinginmail.wordpress.com/

The “Drowning in Junk Mail” latest post, “How to Stop Mail for a Deceased Person
OCTOBER 14, 2015 - https://drowndinginmail.wordpress.com/ is extremely informative. And timely for me since my family just got junk mail from The Nature Conservancy to a family member that passed away years ago. It made me very sad.

AARP has a great check list of things to do when someone dies. I am going to expand on the section about what to do with a deceased person’s mail….”

Two other recent posts from which I got a great deal of value are found here: Drowning in Junk Mail – How to Opt-out of Junk Mail Using a DMA Ethics Complaint - JANUARY 23, 2015: https://drowndinginmail.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/drowning-in-junk-mail-how-to-opt-out-of-junk-mail-using-a-dma-ethics-complaint/

And here: Drowning in Junk Mail – How to Opt-out of Junk Mail and Phone Calls from InfoCision - FEBRUARY 4, 2015: https://drowndinginmail.wordpress.com/tag/nature-conservancy/

In the years I have worked hard to stop the volume of junk mail I receive from marketers, charities and scams, I cannot recall finding a more informative website.

Fortunately, years into the fray, I have to realize that there is no silver bullet and that it is a never-ending fray and one needs to be constantly vigilant.

I truly believe in my heart that there is a special place in hell for the direct mail junk mail marketers.

DMA ethics guidelines:

They can send complaints to non-members, but they cannot guarantee that the non-member will stop sending mail.

There are a couple of ways to file a complaint with the Ethics Board at the DMA:

The best way is to fill out the online form, you can upload photos and emails.

Or you can go old school and mail in an example of the junk mail and a complaint letter to:

The Carroll County State's Attorney's Office is warning residents about a utility bill payment scam targeting both businesses and individual residents.

The Economic Crimes Unit of the state's attorney's office has received information about several recent incidents in which a caller tells the victim their BGE bills have not been paid, and threatens service will be disconnected if immediate payment isn't made, according to a new release from State's Attorney Brian DeLeonardo. Carroll County's connection to Cuba began with sugar in 1800s December 30, 2014 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

On May 28, 1898, a local newspaper, the Democratic Advocate, printed a letter from Roy Powder in a section for "Bachman's Valley Items."

Powder, serving with the U.S. Army's 6th Cavalry, was waiting to be deployed to Cuba when he wrote to his sister, "Mrs. Wm. Stansbury," from Tampa, Florida:

"Dear Sister. I and our troops are still here. This is a very warm place, and is full of alligators, lizards, snakes and all kinds of reptiles. We had a fine time swimming our horses across Tampa Bay … sand is very deep; up to the knees of the horses in the streets… we are awaiting orders to move to Cuban soil most any moment..."

On Dec. 17, 2014 President Barack Obama quickly found himself knee-deep in alligators when he announced a dramatic new approach in United States foreign policy toward Cuba.

Curiously, Cuba is sprinkled liberally throughout our local history.

Cuba was probably first known in Carroll County for its large sugar trade with the United States throughout the 1800s. Sugar was a household staple — and later a valuable commodity in the early canning industry that got its start in the mid-1800s.

Cuba policy draws critics, new battles on Capitol Hill

U.S. President Obama announces a shift in U.S.-Cuba policy

U.S. President Barack Obama announces a shift in policy toward Cuba while delivering an address to the nation from the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, Dec. 17, 2014.

Polls show a majority of Americans support easing relationship with Cuba.
