Published on Jul 20, 2006: Some say Half Japanese were the world's greatest underground band. Jad and David Fair started the band HALF JAPANESE in their bedroom in Uniontown, Maryland in 1975. Though neither could play a single note on any instrument, they went on to record one of the greatest albums of all time.

Linda Louise Shafer, Westminster High School class of 1971, July 24, 1953 - June 27, 2017

Sadly, our Westminster High School class of 1971 classmate, Linda Louise Shafer, passed away on June 27, 2017.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, colleagues, loved-ones and friends. She will be missed.

Linda Louise Shafer of Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Westminster, MD, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2017, after a long illness.

She was born on July 24, 1953, to Lindsay and Louise Shafer of Westminster, MD. After graduating from Westminster High School in 1971, Linda attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in 1975. She received a Master of Divinity in 1979 from the Union Theological Seminary in New York and, later, a Ph.D. in Sociology in 1994 from American University in Washington, DC.

She served as Deacon, Elder, Associate Pastor, and Pastor in the United Methodist Church, Baltimore-Washington Conference, from 1979 to 1989.

From 1989 to 2011, Linda was engaged in research project leadership, review, and analysis in the fields of education, health, and human services, most recently with the American Institutes for Research.

Linda had a strong calling to serve others, but her greatest joy and commitment was to her son, Arkee. She was also a very generous, loyal, and supportive friend. Linda's favorite pastimes included cake decorating, knitting, reading, and singing in her church choir.

In addition to Arkee, Linda is survived by her brother Larry and his wife Pamela Shafer of Westminster, MD, her brother Lee and his wife Donna Shafer of Big Piney, WY, and eight nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Linda's life will be held at the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 16, 2017. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Linda's name to the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church, 310 Tulip Avenue, Takoma Park, MD 20912.

Last Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the 10:30 in the morning service at Grace Lutheran Church

Last Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the 10:30 in the morning service at  Grace Lutheran Church. Pastor Martha spoke to us about Matthew 10: 40-42 "Whoever welcomes you welsomes me … and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one …"

She asked the question, "What does it mean in our world today to offer a cup of cold water? How do we provide a compassionate welcome to others?"

She finished her sermon by saying, "I leave you today with a challenge for this week: Look and listen for concrete examples of people offering hospitality and a cup of water to others.

"And I urge you to offer God's grace when you see your neighbor in need…"

This is why I go to church, to learn insights that I can use in the following week. Just saying.

PBS - Martin Luther – Complete documentary. (Parts 1 & 2)

Martin Luther – Complete PBS documentary. (Parts 1 & 2)

(Quote from Amazon) Martin Luther is born into a world dominated by the Catholic Church. For the keenly spiritual Luther, the Church's promise of salvation is irresistible.

Caught in a thunderstorm and terrified by the possibility of imminent death, he vows to become a monk. But after entering the monastery, Luther becomes increasingly doubtful that the Church can actually offer him salvation.

His views crystallize further when he travels to Rome and finds the capital of Catholicism swamped in corruption. Wracked by despair, Luther finds release in the pages of the Bible, discovering that it is not the Church, but his own individual faith that will guarantee his salvation.

With this revelation, he turns on the Church. He attacks its practice of selling Indulgences in his famous 95 Theses, putting himself on an irreversible path to conflict with the most powerful institution of the day. The Catholic Church uses all of its might to try to silence Luther, including accusations of heresy and excommunication.

Protected by his local ruler, Frederick the Wise, Luther continues to write radical critiques of the Church. In the process, he develops a new system of faith that places the freedom of the individual believer above the rituals of the Church. Aided by the newly invented printing press, his ideas spread rapidly.

He is called before the German imperial parliament in the city of Worms and told he must recant. Risking torture and execution, Luther refuses, proclaiming his inalienable right to believe what he wishes. His stand becomes a legend that inspires revolution across Europe, overturning the thousand-year old hegemony of the Church.

But as the reformation expands into a movement for social freedom, Luther finds himself overwhelmed by the pace of change, and is left vainly protesting that his followers should be concerning themselves with God.

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3

Terry Smack elected to the board of directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank

Huge congratulations to my friend Terry Smack for being elected to the board of directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank. She will do a great job. It is about time. This speaks well of Farmers and Merchants Bank as it is about time, that boards of directors start looking like the local community by adding women, and men and woman of color. Just saying.

If you are not aware of the epic accomplishments of Ms. Smack; she is the owner of Terry's Tag and Title Service, a tag and title agent for the State of Maryland. And she understands that as a responsible business owner, she has a social contract with the community. She gives back to the community and in spite of her phenomenal success, she is still fun, friendly, approachable, and has never forgotten her roots. And the greater community has recognized her efforts by naming her, and her business, in the business category, as one of the Community Foundation of Carroll County's 11th annual Philanthropists of the Year in October 2016.

Join me in recognizing and congratulating bank director Terry Smack. June 29, 2017
