DAYHOFF: All of Westminster got fired up over 'Defense Day' in 1924

DAYHOFF: All of Westminster got fired up over 'Defense Day' in 1924

Eagle Archives

Posted 9/12/10

On Sept. 12, 1924, Carroll County celebrated "Defense Day" in Westminster with singing, parades, a prettiest baby contest, speeches and a beauty contest, of which the prize was $25. (No one entered.)

Much of the day's festivities took place on the Hoffa football field at what was then Western Maryland College -- now McDaniel College.

And oh, by the way ... one of the highlights of the day featured shooting up the field with machine guns. (Maybe it was the machine guns that inhibited the county's most beautiful women from entering the beauty contest?)

More research is needed to understand what "Defense Day" was all about. We obviously no longer celebrate it.

On Aug. 4, 1924, a piece in Time magazine notes that: "The project of holding a National Defense Day on Sept. 12 has met considerable opposition from pacifist bodies. President (Calvin) Coolidge undertook last week to uphold the propriety of the proposed 'Day' in a letter to the National Council for the Prevention of War ..."

Dayhoff: The Tentacle - The 100 percenters and the seethers

The 100 percenters and the seethers
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Now that Maryland’s primary election is over and the general election is only six-plus weeks away, I only have one question left for some candidates and single issues interest groups: Is there anyone left you can annoy – friends, family, poisonous reptiles?

I have come to an age in which I do not want to wish my life away. I am not quite to the age where I avoid buying green bananas, but I am at a point where I have redoubled my efforts to enjoy and appreciate each and every day I have left on this planet.

I suspended those thoughts for the last few of weeks and have prayed that September 14 would come and go quickly.

By the time you read this, Maryland’s primary election will be history. For many, yesterday could not have come soon enough.

For others who study the day-to-day comings and goings of political candidates and what passes as a general discourse on current issues, the weeks and months leading up to yesterday’s primary were one giant headache.

Every election cycle ebbs and flows to the degree with which various people with the IQ of a desk chair and the warmth of a water moccasin engage in certain passions.

Some elections are more civil than others, but so far this election season is best described as an evolutionary breakthrough in ugliness. The threshold of my amazement has been moved once again.

It may be time that we collectively consider bringing back the monarchy...  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3960

Katherine Heerbrandt: Debate on proposed alcohol tax increase turns personal

Frederick commissioner questions restaurateur's bankruptcy, credibility on business matters by Katherine Heerbrandt | Staff Writer

A Frederick County restaurateur said he is learning the hard way that engaging in a war of words with county Commissioner John L. Thompson Jr. can leave battle scars.

Gary Brooks, who criticized Thompson (R) for supporting a proposed alcohol tax increase in The Gazette on Sept. 2, was stunned when an e-mail exchange he had with Thompson last week deteriorated into what he called a "personal attack" involving a failed business endeavor.

The e-mail recipients included members of the media and a number of Frederick County residents.

"These e-mails included personal attacks on myself and many other citizens," said Brooks, who operates Barley and Hops on Urbana Pike, in a written statement. "While Mr. Thompson's references ‘may' have been accurate, they did not include all the information, and hence created a circumstance of innuendo. In short, the implications were that myself and other citizens did not have good standing in the community, as the information was too limited."

Carroll County Elections 2010

This year, the commissioner's race is decided by district. This is due to a 2004 referendum in which voters chose to expand the Board of Commissioners from 3 to 5 seats and divide Carroll County into five districts. Each member of the board is elected in their respective district.
