Two Wrongs and the Right: Overreaction to Conservatives Leads Liberals to Hypocrisy

By TIM PADGETT | March 12, 2012

[…]

They were at it last week when commentators like my former TIME colleague Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post or Kirsten Powers of The Daily Beast dared suggest that male media personalities on the left – like Matt Taibbi, Keith Olbermann or Bill Maher, who called Sarah Palin a “c—” on his HBO show last year – are themselves guilty of misogyny. Rather than swallow their ideological pride for a moment, too many liberals, including more than a few leading feminists, have dug in like the Vatican and refused to acknowledge that their side too can be wrong or unfair. Or, as in the case of Maher, who just gave $1 million to a super PAC backing President Obama, as boorish as Rush Limbaugh.

Yes, there are qualifications. Limbaugh is a powerful gazillionaire radio show bully who beat up a powerless student on the air, while Maher targeted a powerhouse political celeb who was almost one heart-beat from the presidency and blasts her own opponents as if they were so many moose. Maher, like Limbaugh, apologized for his remarks last week while defending their right to speak their minds. But this isn’t about the First Amendment; it’s about the ugly loss of civility in American discourse. The bottom line is that publicly calling any woman the “c” word is the sort of knuckle-dragging stuff for which Maher so sanctimoniously lambastes the gun-loving, NASCAR-watching, church-going heartland on “Real Time.” Maher’s left-wing defenders, meanwhile, argue that he’s an entertainer – seemingly oblivious to the fact that right-wing presidential hopeful Rick Santorum made the same excuse for Limbaugh… http://swampland.time.com/2012/03/12/two-wrongs-and-the-right-overreaction-to-conservatives-leads-liberals-to-hypocrisy/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+timeblogs%2Fswampland+%28TIME%3A+Swampland%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

Washington Post: As gasoline prices rise, Obama's ratings fall

The Washington PostMonday, March 12, 2012 12:15:18 AM
NEWS ALERT

As gasoline prices rise, Obama's ratings fall

Disapproval of President Obama's handling of the economy is heading higher — alongside gasoline prices — as a record number of Americans now give the president "strongly" negative reviews on the 2012 presidential campaign's most important issue, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Increasingly pessimistic views of Obama's performance on the economy — and on the federal budget deficit — come despite a steadily brightening employment picture and other signs of economic improvement, and they highlight the political sensitivity of rising gas prices.

Statement by Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta on the Tragic Incident in Kandahar Province

03/11/2012 02:12 PM CDT

IMMEDIATE RELEASENo. 170-12
March 11, 2012

Statement by Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta on the Tragic Incident in Kandahar Province

"Today I spoke to President Karzai to offer my deepest condolences and profound regret for the tragic incident in Kandahar province that resulted in the loss of life and injuries to innocent Afghan civilians, including women and children.

"A full investigation is already underway.  A suspect is in custody, and I gave President Karzai my assurances that we will bring those responsible to justice.  We will spare no effort in getting the facts as quickly as possible, and we will hold any perpetrator who is responsible for this violence fully accountable under the law.

"I condemn such violence and am shocked and saddened that a U.S. service member is alleged to be involved, clearly acting outside his chain of command.  I told President Karzai that the American people share the outrage felt by President Karzai and his fellow citizens.  This tragic incident does not reflect the commitment of the U.S. military to protect the Afghan people and help build a strong and stable Afghanistan.

"As we mourn today with the Afghan people, we are steadfast in our resolve to work hand in hand with our Afghan partners to accomplish the missions and goals on which we have been working together for so long.  This terrible incident does not reflect our shared values or the progress we have made together.  As I told President Karzai, I am fully committed to ensuring that our cooperation continues.  It is essential to forging a more peaceful future for the citizens of both our nations."

SANDRA FLUKE... A 30-YR-OLD, FAKE VICTIM?
The mass media's initial portrayal of Sandra Fluke depicted her as a young college student, struggling to make ends meet. Upon closer examination, Ms. Fluke was revealed to be a 30-year-old, politically active woman who knew that Georgetown Law did not provide contraceptive coverage to students. Get the full story on Ms. Fluke and her agenda HERE.

'THE VIEW'S' DOUBLE STANDARD IS EXPOSED
Conservative broadcaster Laura Ingraham was called a "slut" by MSNBC's Ed Schultz last year. Unlike Sandra Fluke, Ms. Ingraham was not invited on The View. In fact, that show's matriarch, Barbara Walters reacted quite differently to Ingraham's bashing by Schultz. Find out what happened HERE.

OBAMA GETS TESTY OVER GAS QUESTION
The tone of President Obama's Super Tuesday press conference took a tense turn after Fox News' Ed Henry asked Mr. Obama one question. Henry wanted to know if there was any validity to a theory claiming that high gas prices help to push the President's green energy agenda. Watch Obama bristle HERE.

13-YEAR-OLD DOUSED WITH GASOLINE AND SET ON FIRE IN RACIALLY CHARGED ATTACK
A horrific attack on a young man walking home from school has local officials considering hate crime charges in the incident. As the assailants ignited the gasoline poured on the young man, they allegedly told the victim, "you get what you deserve, white boy." See video from the parents of the victim HERE.

This week, CNN's Piers Morgan got an earful from Congresswoman and former GOP Presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann. During their interview, Morgan called Bachmann "judgemental." And that did not sit well with Ms. Bachmann. Watch a clip from that interview HERE.

VIRAL VID - CNN HOST 'LOSES IT'
The release of some old video featuring President Obama during his Harvard Law School years has sparked a new debate about the pre-political career of the President. CNN's Soledad O'Brien engaged in one such debate with Breitbart.com's Joel Pollak. Watch it unfold HERE.

WHY IS THIS MILLION DOLLAR LOTTERY WINNER STILL ON FOOD STAMPS? SHE'LL TELL YA
A 24-yr-old Michigan woman scored a big win last Fall. But, Amanda Clayton did not believe that her million dollar windfall would disqualify her from collecting government benefits. Watch the misguided woman explain her reasoning to a hidden camera HERE.

STUNNING PHOTOS AND AN EMOTIONAL ENCOUNTER WITH A TORNADO VICTIM

KeysNet.com: This week in Florida Keys news Saturday, March 10, 2012

  • An investigation into whether former Monroe County Technical Services Administrator Lisa Druckemiller stole and re-sold roughly $6,000 worth of county Apple iPads and iPhones to co-workers and family members is about to hit full stride.
  • Florida Keys Community College's presidential search committee on Friday identified nine semi-finalists to replace President Larry Tyree, whose contract expires on June 30.

The 11-member panel, meeting on the college's Stock Island campus, whittled down a list of 19 candidates to the nine semi-finalists. There was an initial pool of 43 applicants when the March 1 deadline to apply hit.
  • Have a pet python or an iguana that's outgrown its cage or some other exotic animal you no longer want or can handle?
  • This past Sunday afternoon we experienced the passing of a powerful front that reminded us all that March is here, bringing with it strong winds and cooler temperatures into the Florida Keys.
  • Well, folks, March is roaring in like an angry lion. And until the wind velocity subsides toward the weekend, I do not recommend going out on your own. Certainly not on the Atlantic side. Nothing puts a damper on a day of fishing like having to call the U.S. Coast Guard for assistance.
  • Chris Maroney of Stuart caught a tournament record of 118 inches of redfish and snook to win the Backcountry Fly Championship that ended Feb. 26.
  • Question: We have a bookkeeper that comes in once a month and prepares an income statement. For the past several months, my husband and I are sure the statements are wrong. They keep showing we are making a nice profit, yet we never seem to have enough cash to pay off all the bills. We even have to struggle to make payroll.
  • For a listing of home and condo sales in the Florida Keys for the period Jan. Feb. 25 through March 3, click here:
  • The culinary rumor mill went into high gear last September when the sign in front of Chanticleer Restaurant in Islamorada was hand-painted, "Gone Fishin'." Owner chef Jean-Charles Berruet had, indeed, retired to enjoy his other passion, fishing, and turned the space over to local chef Michael Ledwith.

McClellanville SC city hall 3/9/12

McClellanville SC city hall 3/9/12 Labels: Dayhoff Daily Photoblog, Dayhoff photos, Governance City Hall photographs, US st South Carolina, US st South Carolina 2012 March, http://www.townofmcclellanville-sc.net/

According to DiscoverSouthCarolina.com, “McClellanville is situated on the Atlantic coast, on land surrounded by Francis Marion National Forest and has traditionally derived its livelihood from the sea and coastal marshes by fishing, shrimping and oystering. In 1989 the town was devastated by the full brunt of Hurricane Hugo, which destroyed homes, fishing boats, trees and much of the picturesque character of this historic fishing village. The stronger north side of the eyewall passed directly over the village. Residents who took refuge in Lincoln High School, which had been designated as a storm shelter, were surprised to be flooded by a storm surge which threatened to drown all the refugees. Helping one another, in pitch darkness, they were all able to get into the space above the false ceilings in the building and no one was lost.”
